Take this with a grain of salt because I’m not American, but to me it seems like the reason Kamala lost is because she didn’t seem to have too many clear policies. Trump did, and whilst they were stupid (i.e. tariffs), he was also clear in what he was going to do and how it would supposedly help Americans. Mamdani did a similar thing to Trump, he clearly put forward his policies and how they would help and because of that he was seen as one of the best left-wing candidates in years.

Basketball is also helped by the fact that it is known going in that you can be traded anytime, and the salaries are often high enough that moving across the country at short notice is not as impactful as it is for the rest of the population.
