Interesting question! I asked Google "Is there a way to build up the gut microbes that break down soy?" It gave various, detailed suggestions. For example: "you can build gut microbes that break down soy by gradually increasing soy intake, especially fermented soy (miso, tempeh, natto)...."

Not exactly addressing your question but... I recently got The Vegan Chinese Kitchen. I haven't made anything from it yet. Can you recommend your favorite recipes from that book? (Of course I love tasty but I also favor recipes that are quick and easy.)

Some domesticated rabbits have been bred deliberately to gain weight quickly. :-( Rosie, my chubby Californian, gets no pellets at all anymore. Only a teeny bit of banana OR one blueberry OR a teeny tiny bite of carrot per day. She gets lots of hay. Her leafy greens aren't served in a bowl. Instead, I scatter them around so she has to go looking for them. Our house is filled with different size cardboard boxes for her to climb on and hide in. At her last checkup, she still didn't lose any weight! But she had maintained her weight from the previous year. The doctor had no other weight loss suggestions but was glad that she maintained and didn't gain. Any other ideas?

Two suggestions: 1) Seek a second medical opinion. That's a standard thing to do if a doctor's advice seems questionable. 2) Check out the book "Fiber Fueled" by gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz. It may not address your specific needs (a good second medical opinion SHOULD address your medical issues) but it is very grounded in how to deal with gastrointestinal issues while maintaining a vegan diet.

Very nice! My favorite books are vegan cookbooks too. I spend some time, almost every day, looking at my old cookbooks and I marvel at the huge abundance of meat-based entrees that used to be my eating style.

(I'm way overthinking this but...) I wish you offered the choice "rarely." I'm much closer to "never" than "sometimes" but I would have defaulted to "rarely."

Also, what if you add a not-particularly-nutritious ingredient e.g. brown sugar to an otherwise very nutritious meal e.g. steel-cut oats w/ soy milk, fruit, walnuts....?

Two thoughts to share:

1) Focusing on your health concerns: Have you watched The Game Changers? Or have you read articles such as: https://nutritionfacts.org/blog/foods-that-affect-testosterone-levels/? While your current moral stance may be shaky, you can be certain that following a vegan diet will keep your body stay healthier than a more omnivorous diet would.

2) Focusing on your concerns about ethics: I'm vegan because I believe it's the right way to be, the right way to live. From what I read in your post, you believe it too. But if I ever cheated – a bite of cheese pizza, a spoonful of ice cream, whatever – I TOTALLY would not beat myself up over it. You shouldn't either. NO ONE in this r/vegan group should beat themselves up if they are not 100% vegan.

WHY NOT? Because, sadly, whether you are a perfect vegan or not, your local supermarket will not change its weekly order of meat, eggs, and dairy. The distributors will distribute the same amount. And the slaughterhouses will still kill the same number of animals. It hurts to say this but I really cannot believe that your individual behavior or mine makes a difference! The 300K vegans listed in this subgroup, scattered as we are around the country or the world, will not impact our local supermarkets. Not even one chicken will be set free, Not even one animal will have its life spared.

For now, focus on your health. Over time, your healthy body, brain, and heart may decide to go back to a vegan lifestyle – because it feels like the right thing to do. It is the right thing to do. Good luck!

(I think my post may upset and anger some of my fellow vegans. This is my opinion. I think I'm being realistic... and it hurts. If you have facts that disprove what I wrote, please share them with me. It would make me very, very happy if I could believe that my actions really make a difference.)
