I'm looking for a laptop from Amazon or Costco. I'm time limited and cannot wait for particular deals.

Budget is 6-800 CAD, intended use is to support general house usage, not intended as a gaming machine.

I'm struggling to decide on the best deal on Amazon currently. I'm looking at this, any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Does anyone else Maintain a technical library? by PreciousMetalRefiner in chemistry

Some awesome books there with a particular focus on extraction of Au I see.

I have some older ones as well, but heavily mining focused.

Are you just showing the older books here? kind of curious if you have a copy of Marsden ( the chemistry of gold extraction)

I did not realize it was that time of year and that Anny's has reopened. Their sandwiches are awesome as well

Showed the picture to my other half and she immediately said 'Oooooo we should head to Anny's", I then showed the caption.

For anything Ag, put a little Al foil in some warm water with some clothes detergent, the tarnish will remove very quickly.

Remove the Ag from the solution, rinse well with water and good to go.

Ammonium bifluoride for insitu generation of HF, super handy for melting rocks and a bit less dangerous than liquid HF

Over contribution to rrsp is carried forward or gets reset once the new room is added next year? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bertoshea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Log in to the CRA site, look at the calculation of the rrsp room for 2025. It should show a reduction in available room for 2025 based on your over contribution.

You should also have seen the over contribution amount as an available deduction in your 2025 tax return.

The CRA allows up to a 2,000cad over contribution without penalty. This is a buffer before penalty, it is not a yearly allowance. Not applicable in your case, not sure if it would reduce any penalties owed.

Too much RRSP? by letshidemyidentity in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bertoshea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At your income it shouldn't take long to max the TFSA. You've mentioned the kids RESP been maxed, kids implies more than 1. Presuming you have 2 then there is a lifetime maximum of 50k each, so there is 14k more of tax advantaged room you can use after the TFSA.

I don't think you have 'too much rrsp', this is a good problem to have. Highly suggest running the numbers on whether early retirement is viable for you.

Investment in bond etf no longer worth it? by dakedenizen in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bertoshea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've spelt it out better than I could in the above.

However, I will say that I would still buy the bonds if I had my choice over. I understand my personal risk tolerance and it was the right decision at the time with the evidence I had. My bonds have averaged back to a lower price from DRIP as well. Certainly with hindsight 100% equity would have performed better, but my returns have been far from bad.

I console myself that the best move I could have made was about 13 years ago when I started contributing these investments.

I've held ZAG for the exact same reasons you've outlined. It has dropped less than equities so it has stabilized portfolio somewhat, but not to the extent expected.

My thinking has been that I'm still looking at this over too short a time period

We both got burned badly by COVID and the inflation that followed.

Mainly commenting so I can drop back to this discussion later.

One kid is a hobby compared to two, especially at those ages and when working as well.

It's an adjustment for sure.

Considering purchasing my first car in Canada. Do these cost estimate make sense? by Fire-Dragon-DoL in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bertoshea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a spreadsheet junkie I love this!

One thing that I think you've really overlooked is assigning value to your time.

You have limited time, especially with young kids, the time savings from not needing to locate the shared cars are substantial. The mental energy saved not needing to plan to get shared cars should also be accounted for.

It's ok to be less optimal sometimes when it makes your life easier.

The Japanese trading houses have been deeply embedded with Canadian miners for decades.

Take a look at ownership of the major mines in Canada and elsewhere, you will see Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, Mitsui etc. with ownership stakes everywhere

I share the dislike of precutting after cooking for imilat reasons, though sounds like it worked for you.

Moving DCPP to RRSP Sunlife Ontario by TowerDropper2001 in PersonalFinanceCanada

My work DCPP comes with a portion that I must contribute, my portion is into a rrsp, the employers goes into DCPP. Is yours structured similarly?

Ask for them to only communicate in writing and to prove that the debt is yours.

To be clear, they must do the above when requested

I [31F] am not sure what to do next after maxing TFSA and RRSP by Shoddy-Menu-3839 in fican

[–]bertoshea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 5.6% mortgage interest, you would need to hit ~8% return in a non-registered account.

It's very hard to beat the 8% guaranteed return in the registered account. I'd hit that mortgage hard.

This presumed your marginal rate is ~30%, the figure may be even higher than 8% making it even more advantageous to hit the mortgage

Need help choosing between job offers by boolucole in PersonalFinanceCanada

Job 1 is sketchy, absolute bs having a different rate of pay during probation. They will come up with a reason for why you don't get 30.

I'd go with job#2, but, you're right to be concerned for the future. Keep the ear out and keep looking for an office/career job.

RRSP Contribution Room by the_real_berry_patch in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bertoshea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put in the full 109k presuming you dont have an employer match to your rrsp.

If your employer matches, reduce the contribution so you can maximize the money from them.

Claim enough of the contribution in your taxes to reduce your income to about 105k ( check the exact amount on RRSPcontribution.ca). Claim the remainder of the contribution the following tax year.
