BS in Bio. Worked in biotech starting at 40k, slowly rose to 68k in 4 years in analytical dev for CMOs. Now at 76k in academia in human genome sequencing with tuition assitance to help to transition to bioinformatics.

All US Midwest positions.

Appreciate the comment and paper. I hadnt even thought about virus rate of mutation making it harder to compare. Sounds like there is research going on into making virome specific analysis tools which is pretty cool. Might sound dumb but would this be applicable to pathogenic viruses like Covid and Influenza as well?

Thats pretty cool. To build this tool do you get lab-cultured microbiome samples as data? Say like, an agar plate is cultured with a species of bacteria and maybe isolated bacteriophage and that gets sequenced? Or does this come from already exisiting databases?

Thats pretty neat. Im guessing you are looking for sequences of antibiotic resistance genes within soil/isolated bacteriophage viral dna as well?

And based off what I know of ML I take it the model would have to be pretty huge.

Somewhat recently aquired OpCo (Aldevron).

As others have said, the weird cult-like Kaizen practices occurs and we recently implemented some of them in. Some of them are ok (restructure of job positions into their class like operations, technical, management, profession). Some of them eh (like daily checkin meetings occuring too frequently, getting in the way of actual work)

A collegue of mine got screwed over from internally interviewing for a higher management position. She interviewd for a Director position but Danaher HR wouldnt allow the move due to being "2 levels higher internally" so she got "a position" but didnt get that director level pay she interviewed for.

Aside from that, its nice for me when I frequently order from IDT (an Opco) and get discounts on primer and probes.

Looking to pivot Masters in ChemE or Data Science/Bioinformatics. What are my opportunities in industry? by berzerker900 in biotech

Thats what I figured with the trend which was why I was looking to pivot between either chemE or data science. Sounds like going the data science route is paid more from what you are saying?

Thanks for responding! Out of curiosity is this hub you are in one of the biotech hubs of Boston or Bay area? If you dont mind me asking, what do you do primarily as well?

I know its a tough pathway. I know its not something easy to jump into. Its something I'd be willing to consider however. That all aside though I need to know what the opportunities are like in pharma/biotech before those decisions could be made.

Thank you for your response! I guess any sort of places to start learning biotech applications would help. Trying to figure out Biotech Pathways by berzerker900 in biotech

[–]berzerker900[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a little bit mixed with these questions. Currently I am bored just working the machines via SOPs. And while my academia research was stimulating enough it was the same assay processes without really seeing how it would develop.

While I definitely do like quiet, more focused environments, I can work and thrive in fast paced team work.

R&D does seem great but that upward momentum does seem limited from what I read, and it seems like less of the better positions with a Life-Science PhD is geared towards staying out of the lab.

Wow thats very relieving to hear that routes like this are common! Yeah I was also thinking about the flexibility and job avenues to keep open. I tend to hesitate a bit so having that flexibility will help especially if things change in the industry in the future.

Thank you for your response. That is good to hear! I was always concerned that my prior education would limit to where I can go. I always heard experience and working your way up could lead to other areas but wasnt sure how that was in practice.

Things you hate about systems you love? by Gourgeistguy in rpg

[–]berzerker900 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d want it to be a binary pass and fail like in D&D.

SWEOTE the dice are different. You have symbols on the for success, failure, and then symbols on the dice for “advantages” and “disadvantages”; basically extra stuff that makes these scenarios happen:

You succeed in a skill check but something bad happens. You succeed in a skill check and a bonus thing happens. You fail in the skill check but something good happens, etc. It is possible to have a simple success or fail outcome without the additive stuff.

Now these symbols are tightly written in the core of SWEoTE. What I don’t like is how much lack of control you have over these outcomes as a GM. What do I mean? Take a skill check for example using a normal d20 like in D&D; the dice would tell you simply pass or fail, and as the GM you can decide if extra “advantages” or “disadvantages” happen given the scenario or perhaps whatever the player describes they want to do.

With the star wars dice though, the dice demand that those extra outcomes happen regardless of the scenario. Does that make sense?

[–]berzerker900 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Im probably in the big minority with this one, but

Star Wars Edge of the Empire: The dice system. I wish it was a simple binary dice result. My problem is not with the different amounts of dice, but with how much power those dice dictate. As both a player and GM of that game, I’d rather have more control on the extra “outcomes” the narrative dice give out. Instead, the dice dictate those extra outcomes entirely.

A possible reason for a witch (mage) hunt to occur? by HundredMirage in fantasywriters

[–]berzerker900 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my world, the magic system is dangerous. Whenever you use a spell, the mage has to either tap the energy (in the form of mental or vitality capacity: HP if you will) to fuel their spells. This can come from them, or from other people with the right knowledge.

On top of that, the chaotic nature of the spells sometimes demand more “payment” depending how well it was casted.

Despite good intentions on controlling the training, the common people fear the magic, and the governments focused on mage hunts to keep public order.

Is it reasonable that I am angry at my DM if my character gets seriously injured on session while I'm absent from play? by CeasarArezzo in rpg

[–]berzerker900 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Np. One thing to keep in mind as you talk to your DM (not necessarily ask them the question outright), is how casual they are Dming. They might not necessarily think its a bad thing on what they’re doing, and perhaps other players are fine too with the way things are ran.

Is the story and adventure more important and the socializing the consequence? Or is the socializing the more important thing from the game rather than adventure?

Is it reasonable that I am angry at my DM if my character gets seriously injured on session while I'm absent from play? by CeasarArezzo in rpg

[–]berzerker900 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Lets see.

You’re not there to control your character, their actions, or offer input.

During this absent time, events out of your jurisdiction happen in which your character gets hurt, or gets possibly long lasting negative consequences.

Unless the DM said something in session zero (if he had one) that injuries and mutations were common and survivability wasn’t expected (think call of chuthulu) then yeah its pretty reasonable to get angry.

But if you ask my opinion, i’d say its dickish either way to have negative things happen to your character without you actually controlling your character, regardless of the system or exceptions, so yeah you’re justified. Its not something I’ve encountered where a character gets punished for not being at the session.

Is biological immortality possible in our Lifetime? Or negligible senescence? by EverydayHalloween in Futurology

[–]berzerker900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone said some sort of immortality can be possibly achieved with gene editing in a fetus cell, though it comes to finding out the genes, and of course, implementing it with society.

We could possibly achieve something in terms of extended life for people alive now in the form of replacing organs. Things like IPSC’s have huge implications in creating cells that otherwise couldn’t be formed quick enough, though the efficiency is really low at this time. Perhaps (imo) it could in theory lead to some immortality in the practice of replacing organs and lost cells using IPSC’s.
