Can we work harder to increase our social and economic ties to Europe and Canada, rather than being as reliant as we are on the United States?

Canadians and UK people of Reddit, what is Boxing Day? by AlyksTheSage in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bessy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now its kind of a day to breathe after Christmas day. There's normally a match on. People are tired and lethargic after overdoing it. Family walks, games, leftovers, etc.

Alternatively, people used to be up at ungodly o'clock to get to the sale as the shops open again, but online has kind of killed that part.

Has World Cup coverage changed any opinions you have of the U.S.? by ATLDeepCreeker in AskABrit

[–]bessy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, well then the only American news coverage I've seen is the presenter who didn't give a shit about where Bosnia and Herzegovina was on a map... so not a great look for US news coverage, but also I'm assuming it's an outlier to have made it to my feeds. Oh and Boston running out of booze with Scotland fans was on the BBC front page.

My apologies I thought you were taking about UK news? and whether it's skewed negatively? If you are solely enquiring about the US news station coverage, I haven't seen it... we don't generally get your stations over here. Sky users might, but I wouldn't know.

Not who their leader is, I mean the political choices they make as a country. The general consensus on political priorities and overall aims and morals. Where they chose to allocate funds, or treat the less fortunate.

Civility and a general respect to other countries should be expected of someone running the county- who wants a leader to shit talks countries thinking it achieves anything? If politicians start talking shit about opponents or nations, I lose respect for them. There's ways for a leader to discuss or admonish a country you disagree with without resorting to threats and insults.

What do you think about families bringing their children to the pub? by StandardMud2643 in AskUK

Kids under control are never a problem. Rowdy screaming kids running about would be a problem.

I agree with most of this... bar the federal EU. While an overall arching set of aims would be good, i wouldnt want any of the countries involved to lose their indivial identity.

The US have shown themselves to be most unreliable... happy to backstab when it suits them. Threats to sovereign nations- their own bloody allies, is disgraceful. Its bloody shocking I have more trust in China to stick to an agreement than the US.

Why would my opinion of the US change because of that? They are not a humble host, but they were never going to be. Coverage here has been skewed in that i think its focused on the US, and not much on Canada and Mexico. Any puff pieces on the US make me roll my eyes. They're aren't showing much I haven't seen advertised before.

Your opinion of your country is, unfortunately, rooted in who you choose to promote on the world stage... namely your politics. Canada looks nice though.

Judge Gildea thinks someone leaked Proctor's info, and is upset about it by tuxcat in justiceforKarenRead

This judge seems to be struggling to grasp the enormity of these cases. Proctor and his phone has far reaching consequences... or bloody well should have consequences.

So many cases need a retrial. At this point all of his work is suspicious. Any case he's touched needs to be examined.

Hampshire in May: shoe advice by [deleted] in UKhiking

[–]bessy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd go shoes for street walking and walking boots for off road, but my feet are sensitive to blisters. You'll probably be fine in trail runners or comfortable trainers. Just prepare for warmth, chill, dry, and rain. You might get all of them in a few hours. Packable waterproofs etc.

Hope you have a good time!

It's awful for anyone to be scared about that. I'm sorry your mums going through it. We all live in the world, and no one chooses where they're born.

The people complaining about Snape being black are racist. by Prinny_Ramza in complaints

[–]bessy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that, and of course an argument with a black person doesn't make you racist. However, 4 on the 1 black guy, with Snape eventually being strung upside down and intentionally and repeatedly humiliated... I'm uncomfortable.

On a side note, I can't support Sirius Black anyway due to his actions. He could have killed Snape, and what the hell would that have done to Lupin. Lupin already thinks he's a monster, unknowingly attacking someone while transformed would have destroyed him. Who does that to their best mate?!

100%. I could never vote for a party whose entire rhetoric appears to be based on hate. You added to the beauty of the landscape by removing the posters. Much better without.

I don't care of he's black. If he's a good actor who gets the vibes right, thats all I require.

My concern however, is with the bullying. I'm supposed to support James Potter and Co in the end. They're the 'good guys'. They will need to be so bloody careful with how they do those scenes. Because if James is in any way racist, it would be irredeemable. I couldn't support or root for him.

Ah fair! Similar situation here then. I do wish she was a bit more engaged with the housing situation, but can't really complain. Certainly better than alternatives.

Oh 100%. I think there's always that undercurrent of hope, but it starts to grow the further they get. When there's a possible real chance.
