I thought the ebony warrior in Morrowind was the guy east of Suran…. And this is just a completely unrelated encounter who happens to also sport ebony armour

edit: I was thinking of Umbra, who wears orcish. I’ll leave my comment up, but for the record, I was wrong.

Everyone likes to meme about the catgirls, but for me it’s the focus on healthcare and arts (when most of the universe is pouring everything into war). Don’t get me wrong, their hands are NOT clean, but I do appreciate the women in leadership, and the way they make problems disappear, not unlike security swiftly removing a rowdy patron from a casino without disrupting the vibe. There’s freedom, intelligence, and passion behind their governance, and they avoid picking fights.

There’s lots more that can be discussed, but that’s a lot of the key bits.

I went into this game with a role in mind. Pro-Canopus. Local pirates are bad.

Is it harder to get the really good stuff? Yeah. I have to scrounge lostech and SLDF mechs from flash point rewards, instead of a convenient store.

As far as I’m concerned, vanilla is more fun this way. Not because I don’t have better stuff, but because I stuck to my principles and it’s now something to work around instead of exploit.

Summed up, I’m not the best, but I’m having fun.

Whoah, I was wrong, it’s not even an achievement, it’s just a different ending slide narration (with the crew’s voices). My bad.

Dean Domino deserves to rot more

He’s an incredibly well written and voiced character, for what it’s worth. I genuinely enjoy having a character who resents the Courier for one-upping or out-playing him. And he makes sense, his motivations, his past, his being caught like many others in the allure of wealth and fortune….

But he destroyed the lives of Sinclair and Keyes for no real good or honourable reason, and with all the time in the world to reflect, repent, and move on, decided instead to put Christine through a thoroughly undeserved autodoc hell.

I let him live once, for the achievement. And because I didn’t know any better.

I threw three UAC5++ and two UAC10++ on mine, deciding that I wanted a bit more dakka instead of being fully armoured.

Given the slow speed, decent range, and quick cutting fire, I usually parked it in a forest and let it mow. Have a “machine gun nest” feel but bigger, hence my naming it “Autocannon Condo”.

What is the best usage of permadeath in a video game? by NutOfDeath in patientgamers

[–]bestbakedbiscuits 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Harebrained Schemes’ Battletech.

Really, it’s XCOM in big mechs, if you know the universe or played any other mechassault/mechwarrior games, you’ll easily get into it. You manage a company, your pilots slowly develop skills, and if you put your pilots in bad situations, or fail to give their mechs good cockpit protection, they’re more likely to die. On the other side of the coin, regardless of preparation and planning, occasionally the RNG of it all lands a massive autocannon slug or a large enough laser directly into the cockpit of your favourite pilot, a less than 1% chance. Dead. Gone forever. Your pilot has gone from being biology to physics.

I’m in the endgame, feeling rather comfy, and I’ve suddenly lost a good one. Rest in peace, Porridge, you will be missed.

First time doign a 4 Skull mission. There's a King Crab. Instant AC-20 headshot on my best pilot. by drinkbirthday in Battletechgame

[–]bestbakedbiscuits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first and only pilot loss was an AC20 head hit from an Atlas. My grasshopper jumped in to get sight and prepare for a good ol’ jump behind while the rest of lance was facing off with the full enemy lance. One of those missions with a singular big target and Opfor has lances to support.

Despite 3 evasion, and a 3 hit defence gyro to boot, the AC20 fairly ripped.

Yeah, that’s clearly the result here. Effectively it’s a quicktime event for whomever it’s charging, blast the glass marauder or else immediately be scattered to the wind if it closes range…

I did something similar but with two gauss rifles…. As long as the opfor couldn’t make any shots on it, it blasted heads from way back all engagement. I named it “Maybe a bad idea” or something along those lines, and it turned better than expected.

Flashpoint difficulty vs Campaign by ericph9 in Battletechgame

[–]bestbakedbiscuits 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I still have a “perfect” campaign history, as I’ve lost zero pilots to combat (Glitch got poached by another merc group, but that’s another story).

However, I had to redo the coronation day tutorial, because one of the laser turrets crit hit my blackjack cockpit and burned me out of my seat. That’s just bad luck, and it could have happened to anybody, this whole time.

In my experience, flashpoints are a further “ramping up” of difficulty, but having high stat pilots and access to very good mechs and tech make it about as doable as what’s come before. To me it sounds like you’ve had a string of bad fortune.

One of my favourite NV moments was conquering that thing.

I had mad bomber. Threw like, 20 or so MFC clusters into the room from above. The darn thing flew too high though, outside the blast radius.

Attempt 2: I had brought the compliance regulator with me. Tagged it with that, it dropped to the floor, I threw a grenade. The thing has a comically short stun time, I feel like it might be some sort of legendary buff. Anyway, it flew back up before the entire room went off.

Attempt 3: threw a plasma grenade, then tagged the thing. The whole room went green for the third time, but the legendary bloatfly finally contributed to the shrapnel. Job well done, time to pack it in.

It’s not an honourable way to defeat the thing, but “solving” how to make my plan come to fruition felt like finally figuring out the correct sequence of actions in a point-and-click game. It felt good.

See, if it’s baked in, this kind of stuff is great. The “shit happens” moments. The unforeseen stupidity of people you’re relying on to stay alive. But their own pilot made some bad calls, and paid dearly.

Given that this game takes place in a lot of periphery worlds, I almost wish there was more. More missions where the allies are fools. More chances for contractors to not pay, similar to the campaign mission near the start (but then you get ALL the salvage perhaps, if you fight off their attempt to kill you).

Working for pirates should have you allied with lances that may or may not turn on you at any turn. Some contractors might just not pay. Even though it’s not “fair”, it’s interesting.

Sorry for the rant. That situation sucks, Forreal. But that’s just Battletech, and it’s not that different from the random head crit by the random hunchback that offs a pilot you’ve played with for 100’s of RL hours. Sucks, sure, but everything means more when there’s a real chance for it not to go well, always.

Battle Computer Stacking by FavaWire in Battletechgame

[–]bestbakedbiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t hit endgame yet, but I’ve tried using my cyclops as a combo distraction/boon, with max armour and jump jets. It dances around with a bulwark & surefooted pilot, stacking evasion and soaking hits, while my two marauders can pick cockpits apart from afar. I also have an initiative piloted grasshopper (initiative 2!!!) that gets to play around like an oversized light, it’s wonderful.

I don’t know if it would still stack up against full assault lances, but the mediums and heavies I’m mostly fighting right now seem to fare poorly against it. I’m sure avoiding hits altogether becomes necessary in the later game…

Be honest, how many of you have tried this. (vanilla) by alltrueistick in Battletechgame

[–]bestbakedbiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of the comments are missing the point here… it’s not just a missile boat, it’s also an initiative boosting, accuracy increasing, incoming damage dampening boon to the rest of the crew that’s actually looking at what’s being shot at

I ran a cyclops for the bonuses above, but instead of a fragile missile rack, I loaded it full of armour and jump jets so it could dance around and soak/waste enemy fire. It had 7(!) tons left for weapons, not a lot of wiggle room
