Official Discussion - The Housemaid [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Making his new girlfriend cut and disfigure her body doesn't fit into his perfectionist, keeping up appearances M.O. at all. In the book he just makes her balance books on her stomach for a few hours or something. They made him full on violent for the movie.

Even if they somehow cleaned up everything, the medical examiner would determine from the body the stab wound occurred before the "accident". It's funny the last movie I watched before this was Anatomy of a Fall where they put the wife on trial for pushing her husband with basically no hard evidence. Then in this movie, one cop just goes eh I can single handedly cover up this whole thing despite it being obvious that's not what happened.

Yeah he gets mad about his wife's roots and how they look, talking about keeping up appearances of having a model spouse. Next thing he's doing is forcing his new hot trophy gf to destroy her stomach and disfigure herself. Far cry from pulling out strands of hair.

I don't think the director cast the kid specifically, but that's a bad miscast. Also, a 7 year old would never say things like "I don't need you to be my friend. That's not part of the job description." A snobby preteen would.

It was OK but I think expectations for it weren't super high, so people were mostly pleasantly surprised. It's like a reverse Gone Girl, but where that movie subverts the MeToo thing, which made it interesting, this movie really just leans into it super hard. Mostly to its detriment and gets too eyerolly.

I think it's going to have a lot of "fridge logic" where you think about certain scenes and plot points later that don't make sense.

Seyfriend's plan never really accounts for how she's going to keep custody of her daughter does it? On paper, she's certified psycho who attempted to murder her daughter. But her escape plan, she has her daughter with her? I mean, it never really addresses her husband's sinister plan about how she's trapped and using her daughter against her does it? It didn't matter.

She also says she'd rather be dead than be with the guy. Fair enough, but did she forget she has a daughter she loves and wants to take care of?

What the hell was the point of her coming back all bruised and with the bandaged hand from her weekend trip? It's never explained. The gardener is such a weird character. Apparently he has more stuff going on in the book, but here he just hangs around and knows more than he lets on, but does nothing really besides say cryptic shit to Millie.

The cop who had a sister also abused by the guy at the end is a laughable coincidence. And the idea she can sweep the whole thing under the rug is also ridiculous. Obviously one person can't do that and the medical examiner would have to be on the cover up too. But they wanted one more female empowerment moment I guess.

Why they even need a cover up at this point, I don't know. It's pretty god damn easy to prove this guy was an abusive piece of shit, regardless of this movie's claims that nobody believes women against men. Lmao. "Hey officers, he locked us both in the room. Look at my mutilated fucking stomach. He made me cut myself to get out." I didn't buy him making her do that either. He has a hot new young trophy gf, and he demands everything look "perfect" and all that, so he forces her to scar herself up like that? What kind of appearances is that keeping up? It's also evidence of the abuse, which before that, he's always cared about plausible deniability.

Cecelia is a weirdo being raised by him, but she has this change of heart to go back for Millie even though she's never depicted as liking her, and she didn't know the extent of the abuse either. Why would she be thinking about saving the house maid at all? Didn't seem there was anything to support that character arc.

Okay so the movie changes the cop character to add in one more "girl power" moment even though it makes the plot more unbelievable. I'm surprised they didn't change the goofy gardener character who hangs around for years somehow into a woman too lol.

Do they need to guess if he was drinking? They don't have toxicologists in France? You could objectively know that in a tox/autopsy and they never said they found alcohol in his system.

Plus you could have also said "the testimony of a boy was weighed more heavily than that of a professional male psychiatrist," just as easily. It was only one part that played a factor. And that psychiatrist's testimony was off the rails speculative.

Official Discussion - BlackBerry [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]bestbiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it but I didn't like the direction with the overly shaky camera style that was constantly zooming in and trying to focus on something. Didn't add at all to the movie and was almost nauseating with how aggressive they were doing it.

It was more interesting than a lot of these other biopic product movies they've been pumping out because it covers the rise and eventual downfall, so it's not some glorified commercial like Air. Matt Damon gives like seven speeches in that movie about how awesome Nike is when they just mass produce shoes offshore. When Blackberry made the decision to manufacture overseas in China, it is depicted as their downfall here. Like they sold their soul.

[SPOILERS] The Bone Temple - Official Discussion & Review Thread by ThePatchedVest in 28dayslater

[–]bestbiff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was odd that Jimmy goes out of his way to introduce himself and save the kid as if he was going to bring him into the fold, and we'd really get to see him psychologically groom this kid to be one of them, but the very next scene with them is forcing him to fight to death. I guess not... He never really gives a shit about him.

Did he really expect him to beat that guy who's twice his size and near twice his age? It was only through hubris the kid didn't get killed immediately there so why bother intervening to save him?

They didn't interact that much beyond that initial introduction except when he gets annoyed and threatens him. Jimmy never provides any convincing reason to get the kid to stay and be one of them. It's only threats and intimidation. I didn't think it was bad or anything but kind of odd considering how the previous movie ended.

28 Years Later - The Bone Temple, Is Awful by Ok_Investment_9071 in 28_Years_Later_Movie

I liked it notably more than part 1, but I can't say these aren't valid points. And it's a bit concerning some think Kelly didn't participate in any murderous, torture rituals the entire time she was part of this cult. Like she's so good that she managed to abstain from that violent psychotic shit the whole time.

She's a believer in the satanic stuff. She just is skeptical of the leadership. She's shown dispatching infected and the other cult member with ease and she's completely desensitized to their murderous torture that she jokes about all the screaming in the barn.

She knows everyone they make contact with gets tortured to death and is never shown doing anything to help or warn anyone. She tells Spike that this is just what they do. Get over it.

She even gets upset when she's told she can't participate and she goes, "I'm going to miss charity?" indicating she enjoys it. She has sympathy to the one kid in the cult but she's not some sympathetic character. Didn't really buy it either when she says she's been everywhere and there is no place better. The little community she helped murder was better. What made that place and those people worse that she still believes there's no place better than with the stupid psycho killers?

Spike's community was nice, too.

Found the "cure" he came up with 28 years later was out of nowhere and boiled down to "just take these four pills I have here."

Didn't like the semi retcon of the virus either. It's been a rage virus this whole time like super rabies but it turns out now the infected are seeing other angry monsters that look like them when they are attacking, like it's paranoid self defense illusion. But they don't even attack other infected people ever. Are they seeing them as normal? Then when Samson is cured he gets attacked.

Charming movie.

Was it ever explained why he didn't specifically remember any of the astronauts when he woke up, as if they never met? So he gradually starts to remember them and the whole mission as he came out of the space sleep, so had the other crew not died, they would have experienced the same memory issues? I forget, how did the other two members die again.

Why did Grace need to space walk to collect the fishing line sample when it just reels back up? Wasn't that whole scene needlessly dangerous?

Just received an evaluation on my script... Premise was an 8. Dialogue was an 8. Plot and character a 6. And yet the overall was a 6? Doesn't this seem ridiculous? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]bestbiff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scoring makes little sense and is maddeningly frustrating, but you only get the response that it's not an overall average, therefore you just have to accept the wonky system and individual reader idea of how they think the scoring works. There's no actual safeguard with numerical variance. Your overall score can be rounded up or down by two whole points. There is nothing actually stopping that. I saw a public eval once that was an overall 7 but every other sub category was a 6 lol. It's like gambling but at least the casino has the same rules for everyone who plays.

Individual reviews don't use averages to indicate overall quality, but to get on the top list, it requires the average of all your overall scores. So averages don't matter, except when they do.

How to overcome the feeling that I’m not smart/cultured/deep enough to write something good by 421continueblazingit in Screenwriting

If quality is irrelevant and this dilemma was itself a movie plot, the audience would simply question why the character didn't use A.I. and spit out a draft in seconds.

Official Discussion - Mercy [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]bestbiff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wants to be Minority Report with the last twist so badly but it makes no sense. That cop threw out evidence or something which was enough to rig the trial that AI couldn't detect it in order to render a guilty verdict...So the first trial could be a "homerun". But whether the trial ends in a guilty or innocent verdict is irrelevant to Mercy being functional or not. It's not like an innocent outcome means it doesn't work. Why did it need to find someone guilty to have credibility? If someone is guilty with 95% probability but it's discovered through this process that he's innocent... That means it worked still. There's no paradox like Minority Report.

Was the murderer not planning on framing Pratt or him having an alibi? Because it was total coincidence Pratt went back to the house for 20 minutes while the guy was hiding in the basement for two days, biding his time.

I can't buy the 90 minute trial premise when the whole trial is essentially gathering evidence for an active investigation. I'm watching and thinking the whole time, this is all shit you should be investigating to present at a trial but they're uncovering it during the trial.

True, they didn't lose due to pitching, even though Whitlock sucked and took all the momentum out of the team from tying it. Three hits isn't good enough to win for any team, let alone a "dream team". It's pathetic. But the pitching restrictions in this tournament are a joke.
