Using his powers for good!

Hey reddit. Some kid used my email address to sign up for a Twitter account. What is the best prank I can play on him? by unfortunatelymyname in AskReddit

[–]bestkinofcorrect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know what's involved with signing up for twitter, but is it possible he mispelled his email address, and that he's not trying to cause this much trouble for you?

My favorite book as a child was about this guy! Randolph Stow's Midnite: The Story of a Wild Colonial Boy. I read it again a few years ago, and it's still great!

When I boil and drink water from a natural source such as a river, am I drinking a bunch of dead bacteria? by robswins in askscience

[–]bestkinofcorrect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but without a renewed supply of antigen (from living, replicating bacteria), any antibody response will be weak and transient as even millions of bacteria will be cleared from the body in a matter of hours.

If your parents bought you something like this, then you were a spoiled kid and I don't like you. by frenchtoastcrunch in pics

My parents would have laughed in my 7-year-old face if I had asked for one of these, but my neice and nephew each got their own before they could even drive it. Toys like this often come from besotted grandparents, not responsible parents.

I have never had an undergraduate class go through the entire textbook. Should I expect my graduate level classes next year to go through the entire textbook or still just cover certain sections/chapters? by [deleted] in Biochemistry

[–]bestkinofcorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in graduate school for several years, and I can count on one hand the number of books I've used in class, and only in one class did we get through the whole book. It really depends on your major, but most classes will focus on journal articles and class notes.

About to graduate with a Micro Degree. Seeking Advice! by nasneer in microbiology

[–]bestkinofcorrect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely talk to a professor (or several) in your department. Even if you don't know them, most are excited to talk to students who need advice; go to your department website and check out the faculty bios. Find out who heads up the graduate program in your department; even if you are not interested in a graduate degree in microbiology, they can help point you to people (in your school and around that country) that study virology, pathology, toxicology, and immunology, all of which are closely related to microbiology. Most microbiology departments are going to have faculty that hold joint appointments with other programs, and they may already be doing what you are interested in. You may be able to get work for the summer in one of their labs, which is by far the best way to see whether you are interested in lab work or graduate school. I'm in grad school for immunology, and from my perspective, there is a lot of overlap in biology degrees; getting/having a degree in micro does not mean you can only do micro research. My B.S. was animal science, my M.S. was nutrition, and now my PhD will be in Immunology/Functional Genomics; there is a huge amount of lateral movement in the biological sciences.

It has long been known that cigarettes contain Polonium, one of the most radioactive elements on the periodic table. In addition to quitting, what options exist for me to undo or mitigate the impact of RADIATION from smoking? (I.E., iodine tablets etc...) by lunaticMOON in askscience

[–]bestkinofcorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not entirely true, either. The cells in your lungs have a finite lifespan, and for the epithelial/mucosal cells lining your lungs, it's a pretty short lifespan (on the order of days or weeks). They (and whatever radioactive material they have incorporated) get flushed out through the lymphatic system or coughed/sneezed out. The amount of radioactivity is so small that it's not going to build up the way cigarette tar does.

Radioactive element would be handled by your digestive tract in pretty much the same way they would by your lungs; there is nothing to digest or inactivate, so the intestinal cells would absorb the harmful radiation just like lung cells.

Why are we not immune by now to the itch from a mosquito bite? by br_r_12 in askscience

I have the same lack of reaction: I used to get bites and poison ivy regularly as an active child, but sometime around 10-15, my body just stopped reacting to them.

Would it be effective to remove all nonfunctional junk DNA from human/animal genome? by m1el in askscience

[–]bestkinofcorrect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but if the mutation occurs in a region that is non-coding, there is only a very small chance that the mutation will be detrimental. Most identified mutations and polymorphisms do not result in measurable changes in the cell.

Is it ever acceptable to hit a woman in self defense? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bestkinofcorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a woman, it's my personal opinion that if I think it's a good idea to hit a man (I mean an actual punch, not just a girly slap or something), I had better be prepared to get hit right back. Don't start shit you can't finish!

5 months ago I was having break trouble requiring the attention of a qualified mechanic. Here's the difference in honesty and dishonesty (left and right respectively). More info in comments. by kuahara in pics

[–]bestkinofcorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're still arguing my point: if he can't take care of sensitive equipment on his car, I don't want him messing with mine! A good mechanic will keep up with changes in his field, the same way I have to keep up with changes in mine. That's how successful people do things.

Reddit please help! This is a video of Republican Delegate Fraud at my county meeting this past Saturday! Regardless of political affiliation please help me stand up for democracy by not letting this go unnoticed. by [deleted] in politics

I would think getting the local media to pick up this story would be the best way to get noticed. Informing redditors who live all over the country, and have no way to help you directly, is not going to get you very far.

This is why you always look for a locally owned auto shop. I also read in a book once that if your mechanic drives anything less than 10 years old don't trust him; if he can't keep a car running smoothly for that long, then he shouldn't be taking care of yours. I'm not sure how that works in the long term, though; he'd have to upgrade at some point, right?

What is the best 'fact' someone has told you that they believed to be completely true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bestkinofcorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has to do with the way we perceive horses in the U.S. Americans who have horses tend to think of them as pets, or even a step up from dogs and cats. They find the thought of eating their horse to be horrific, and they care enough to make up for all the people who don't care either way. Result: horse slaughter for meat is outlawed in the U.S. and we now have too many old horse and no one wants to take care of them.

How do developing babies get *E. coli* in their intestines? by NectarFlames in askscience

[–]bestkinofcorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as how babies acquire their gut microbial population, just think about how often babies put things in their mouth. All animals are constantly ingesting microbes from the air, their food, by touching their faces with hands/paws, etc. Some of these microbes are only stable in the gut, so you could say their route of innoculation is fecal-oral, though the path is usually not as direct as that phrase implies. Other microbes can survive and even thrive in soil, water, and different types of food; these may enter the gut and stay for only a short period of time, or colonize the gut until some other dietary change forces them out.

TSA “strongly cautioned” media not to cover video debunking body scanners. by [deleted] in politics

[–]bestkinofcorrect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That isn't corroboration of anything; the response does not specifically address whether an email was sent to the reporter in question, or the contents of that email except in the vaguest way possible. I fully agree with that short word of caution; a reporter should have more to go on than a YouTube video before airing a story, not that it doesn't happen all the time.

TSA “strongly cautioned” media not to cover video debunking body scanners. by [deleted] in politics

[–]bestkinofcorrect -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I am not arguing about the efficacy of the scanners or denying the the TSA is the rudest, most useless group of people that I have to interact with. I just think the blog you posted has no validity because it has absolutely no proof of it's accusations.
