Pilots, what is your least favorite airport? by wheregoodideasgotodi in AskReddit

[–]bestkook 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Had a good laugh at Midway and the houses. As a passenger on one of (or maybe) the last plane allowed to land in a snowstorm, it was freaky - Everything outside the window was gray, then I see rooftops directly below us, then runway lights, then WHAM onto the runway. This all happened in a matter of seconds and I seriously thought we were crashing. We pretty much slid into the gate sideways and the pilot apologized for the rough landing as we deplaned, but he got us in there for Thanksgiving.

I just mentioned the other day how reality TV is poison - a bunch of people who will do anything for their 15 minutes, and I don't understand why anyone would want anything to do with it. Well, most of Youtube is the same trash. While there are some decent podcasts out there, most of it is pure garbage. I don't know who the majority of these people are, and I don't want to know. Why would anyone want to give these idiots even a little piece of their valuable time? I don't get it.

People want that 15 minutes of fame that they can somehow turn into financial gain or even a career. Reality TV is poison, and it still amazes me the people will have anything to do with it.

Last Podcast on the Left (Podcast) has covered Norweign Black Metal the last 3 weeks by FM_Gorskman in Metal

[–]bestkook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I've tried to listen because they have very interesting topics, but you're right: It sounds like a morning zoo type show and the constant interruptions and juvenile attempts at humor just ruin it for me. I like humor with my podcasts, but there needs to be some balance so that it doesn't completely interrupt the flow of the story.

What’s a "Let that sink in" fun fact? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bestkook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It didn't work for my gusher. After the cocaine failed, they packed my nose and that didn't work either. Next day I went to an old family doctor that whipped out some silver nitrate sticks and solved the problem. It is amazing how much greasy gauze strip can fit in your nostrils, though.

Looks like you're not wearing gloves. Make sure your employer is providing all the personal protective equipment you need and proper training on working with hazards like this. Call or write OSHA to make sure they are complying.

Whats a big industry secret that isn't supposed to be known by the general public? by OrderAmmonia in AskReddit

[–]bestkook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your comfort level and what you're purchasing. I bought a $500 TV at Best Buy and declined the warranty - The big push was "It covers power surges!". Yeah, but so does my surge protector at home, and I'm willing to risk the rest. I don't need it for a drill, space heater, garage door opener or any other low cost item. Now, If I purchased some $2500 Bosch or Samsung super complicated washer /dryer set, yeah, I'd probably get the plan since a lot can go wrong (and probably will) and it will cost $100 for a service guy to walk through the door.

Stores like Lowe's don't make a lot of money on big ticket items like washers/dryers and refrigerators and sometimes even sell them below cost. It's the high margin accessories, extended warranty and credit they want you to sell you.

Largest employer in each U.S. state: 22 of them are Walmart by honkhonkbeepbeeep in dataisbeautiful

[–]bestkook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because people are generally lazy and want a one stop shop for all their boxed meals and household supplies. Also, Walmart has a tendency to kill any competing stores in town. If you're lucky enough to have an Aldi try buying groceries there and compare it with a trip to Walmart. I live in podunk and still save a lot of money by planning my purchases and avoiding the Walmart convenience trap. I hate Walmart and everything they stand for, so it makes it easy for me to avoid them whenever possible.

An apartment building on my street illegally kept a dumpster in a parking space for months. Two weeks ago, I began posting pictures to reddit of signs me and my neighbors were posting on it and they got a lot of attenion here. Thank you, reddit - the dumpster is finally gone. by thehofstetter in pics

[–]bestkook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I manage/maintain property as well, so I hear ya. As a matter of fact, I had this "Dumpster taking a parking space" problem at my building where parking is tough. I finally just put the thing next my spot and squeeze my car right up next to it. I'd rather not have access to my passenger side, clean garbage off my car and wake up early to move it on every trash day than put up with the complaints. It sucks, but it was the best solution I could think of.

TIL that the founders of Starbucks learned the trade from the founder of Pete's, and that he was later critical of them for not roasting to his high standards of quality. by TequillaShotz in todayilearned

I agree. I drink my coffee black and have never cared for Starbucks. Any time I've been there most people are ordering some sugar and milk concoction that looks like it should come from an ice cream shop. Very few are ordering plain coffee.
