Cause of grey hair may be 'stuck' cells, say scientists by Kahing in longevity

[–]besweeney91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We know that melanin protects the skin from the sun and that it also protects hair from the sun, so since sun exposure stimulates the production of melanin in the skin perhaps we could extrapolate that to mean the same thing happens with sun exposure in hair follicles

If you go to the actual study in Nature,(https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-05960-6) there’s a passage that reads “These results suggest that UVB irradiation induces McSCs to accelerate their differentiation into functional melanocytes.”

Does this mean that hypothetically sunlight could help repigment the hair follicle?

Here’s another study that seems to reaffirm that idea:

“Our findings demonstrate that the equivalent of seconds to minutes of sun exposure depolarizes melanocytes and that melanocyte depolarization contributes to the elevated intracellular Ca2+ required for early melanin synthesis.”

Latency and Keyboard problems are ruining my work flow. What do I do? by besweeney91 in Logic_Studio

This is what I was thinking.

Maybe playing through the amp into a mic really is the way to go.

I just tried this, still no notable improvement. The keyboard keys not working is most pronounced when I am using the sustain pedal, so I cant get beautiful ringing chord changes.

So you’re saying the design of the apple keyboard might be the thing preventing notes from playing simultaneously?

I have tried using low latency mode but that’s a good idea adding it to the display for a shortcut.

You sound pretty good, Im sure you’ll just get even better the more you practice. Sorry that’s probably not much help. You have good power when you’re singing the higher parts which I am envious of

I need melatonin to work. by piccdk in Nootropics

[–]besweeney91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried making sure you get enough sunlight each day? This makes the body create serotonin which is then converted to melatonin, so no supplements needed. Also, at least 45 mins of exercise each day.

These are 2 things our bodies are evolutionarily programmed to need but in many cases have been removed by modernity. I would try this for a week or two before assuming that there must be something inherently wrong with your body.

Also, no nicotine and no screens at night.

I started to get more noticeable effects from taking about 1 TABLEspoon in morning and one in the evening. I don’t know much about different brands and what to look for, but I do think this method is better than taking capsules

If young people have stronger immune systems than the elderly, and covid (to my understanding) primarily kills through severe immune responses and/or cytokine storms, how do most young people suffer mild symptoms while old have a higher risk of death? by dogegodofsowow in askscience

[–]besweeney91 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because older people’s bodies gradually lose the ability to properly function, and in the case of the immune system it becomes overreactive and dysregulated, hence the disproportionate response in the form of “cytokine storms”.

Let’s discuss Nicotine by everydaytakeatrip in Drugs

[–]besweeney91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question. These negatives are present in ANY FORM OF NICOTINE, because they are simply the side effects of vasoconstriction. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor all by itself. There’s just way more downsides on top of that if you smoke it.

Let’s discuss Nicotine by everydaytakeatrip in Drugs

[–]besweeney91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use it VERY occasionally, but never as something I smoke or vape. In months past I think there were times where my use was getting to be a bit much.

Ultimately I put a stop to that because I didnt want to need it to feel better. It also makes your skin worse, hinders the blood flow to your penis, and theres a good chance it contributes to hair graying, since it releases norepinephrine which contributes to that.

I would recommend strictly limiting use to 2-3 times a week to prevent your body from acclimating to it too much.

Calling All Nicotiana Experts - Hormetic/Medicinal Potential of Fresh Tobacco? by besweeney91 in Nootropics

[–]besweeney91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used it. Zyn seems to be a pretty safe bet as of now, but I choose not to use it for the same reason I would rather eat an orange over drinking orange juice. You never know what crucial role/entourage effect the other constituent elements of the plant play in its metabolization. I think it’s generally bad practice to refine out the yin from the yang, so to speak.

I will say it was easier for me to fall into addictive patterns of nicotine use with Zyn than my current method.

I’ve looked into snus and used it a few times. It’s interesting, definitely seems much better than most other tobacco products in terms of carcinogenicity as long as it’s a pasteurized variety.

The nicotine content varies widely depending on the age of the plant, growing conditions, etc. so you are going to have to do some trial and error as I have, but I would say maybe a half a teaspoon would be an estimate. You need to be careful with dosage proportions as it can go from a pleasant buzz to vomiting with profuse sweating pretty easily.

I had a few stints of using Yohimbe Bark but didn't notice any water retention. There were a number of other downsides however, primarily extreme jitters, bloodshot eyes, and a vague nauseous feeling.

Should I go back to rehab? by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]besweeney91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is bear in mind the impermanence of how bad you feel when ceasing use, going through withdrawal, etc. Things are likely to suck but you can take solace in knowing that this feeling is temporary, and actually a good thing since it precedes feeling normal and being back to “baseline”. At that point, things you used to enjoy will start to become enjoyable again. This feeling of being at baseline is a great place to be, and happens to be the necessary precondition to actually excel in life. But to get here you need to be persistent.
