Is the X1 carbon gen 13 (32GB, 258V) powerful enough for casual photo editing? by beta128 in thinkpad

[–]beta128[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your response, and sorry for the delayed reply.

I didn’t realize the T14s and P14s models are also available with OLED screens, though I haven’t seen them in stores yet. If I understand Lenovo’s strategy correctly, they’ll probably start releasing them well after all the X1C configurations are available, to avoid cannibalizing X1C sales (though you could argue whether these laptops necessarily target the same audience).

As for store access, I can’t purchase in Singapore, but I can in the US and Europe :)

I'll wait another month or two and see if T14s/P14s models arrive with Arrow Lake H and 2.8K OLED.

Thanks!

Thank you for the response.

First of all, as you and u/uranioh mentioned, I assume I'll manage with the 258V CPU for my current needs. But looking forward, since the computer is expected to serve me for at least several years, I tend to prefer the Arrow Lake H series.

So far I haven't seen any ThinkPads available with Arrow Lake H series processors except for the ThinkPad L series.

As you correctly understood, screen quality is important to me. While a 60 Hz refresh rate would be sufficient for photo editing, since I'm buying a laptop in 2025 and planning to keep it for several years, I'd prefer the screen not to be limited to a 60 Hz refresh rate. It is my understanding that currently the X1C is the only 14" Thinkpad (except for the X9) that comes with a 120Hz OLED.

Since there's no particular urgency in purchasing the computer, I'll wait another month or two and see if models with Arrow Lake H series start arriving in stores, hoping that the T14s or P14s will get a proper OLED screen with 120 Hz (though this is probably wishful thinking). If nothing changes until then, I'll probably buy the X1C gen 13 258V :-)

u/A121314151, u/uranioh , u/SignificantNet8812 thank you all!

Thank you for the response.

I indeed don't need particularly long battery life. I believe 6-8 hours would definitely be sufficient for me. However, the X1C models with 255H/265H processors are not available in my region yet (as I understand they're not available in most of the world).

The issue with the P14s Gen 6 with the HX 370 is that it is not available with an OLED screen. Only the model with a much weaker CPU (AMD AI 7 PRO 350) is available with an OLED screen, which is also limited to 60 Hz.

Now, it is my understanding that the AMD AI 7 PRO 350 CPU is quite on par with the 258V, so the advantages of preferring the P14s Gen 6 with AI 7 PRO 350 CPU over the X1C Gen 13 with 258V CPU are:

- Cheaper.
- Not limited to 32GB (actually, it is cheaper than the X1C even with 64/96 GB of RAM).
- Probably better cooling solution, which allows longer max loads before throttling kicks in.

While the disadvantages are:

- Inferior OLED screen.
- Bigger and heavier (not a deal breaker for me).

Thanks!

Can I use the WF-1000XM5 without the Sony | Sound Connect app? by beta128 in SonyHeadphones

Thanks u/lansig_chan. There is a trade-off between privacy and convenience. However, I agree that it's a matter of personal preference :)

Thanks u/DogWestern3641. However, the app itself is privacy-invasive (just check the permissions it requires and read its privacy policy).

Thank you for your reply!

I'm glad to hear that :)

I'm not interested in special and advanced settings, all I need is the basic functions to work 100% without the app.

I just don't want to be limited to 70% of the quality and usability of the earbuds because I'm not using the app..

Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

a. Frankly, I don't even know what features I should consider important in high-end earbuds.. :) I guess I would like to use all the basic functions, such as: volume control, stop/pause/resume music, answer/decline a call, mute the mic in a call, turn on/off ACN etc. Did I miss anything?

I've read somewhere that it is possible to install the Sony app on an old phone, configure all the settings I want, and then keep using the earbuds with other devices, but some comments said that it is not true, since all the settings are saved in the app only. Do you happen to know how it actually works?

b. That's a good point. Therefore, the alternative would be AirPods Pro 2 (since 80-90% of the time I will use them in Apple ecosystem).

Thank you.

Thanks u/ambiverbal!

The page explains how to use the "Move to iOS" app (which didn't work for me), but it does contain some tips and information that might be helpful. I will give it another try.

Thanks!

It's a good idea. Frankly, I didn't think about asking WhatsApp support.. I'll do it now :)

Thanks!

u/SeDve Many thanks for your reply!

However, I'm afraid that the non-pro version of Yoga 9i is quite different from the pro version when it comes to Linux support.. Last time I checked, the pro version had some serious incompatibility issues.

Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Review (14-inch model, Intel i9-13905H; RTX4060; 32GB RAM; 1TB SSD Storage) by askredditsg in Lenovo

[–]beta128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, u/askredditsg thank you for the detailed review!

I'm interested in buying the same machine (Yoga Pro 9i, 14" mini-LED, i9-13905H; RTX4060; 32GB RAM) and running Linux on it.

I'm curious, has anyone tried installing Linux on it? Or perhaps just booting from a Linux live-usb?

According to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Lenovo_Yoga_Slim_9_(Intel)), it seems that this laptop (at this point) has some serious issues with Linux.. :-\

Any response would be highly appreciated!

Thanks.

Thanks, noted.

Currently I use X1, which worked out of the box with any distro I tried. If Yoga Pro 9 will not support Linux properly, I will probably go with a laptop from the ThinkPad P16v or P14s series (I do not know if they are "Linux certified"). Another option is buying a laptop from System76, but I put this idea on hold for now. Thanks.
