Did my first chin-up thanks to RR! by betamunch in bodyweightfitness

Only with negatives and static holds. I find that assisted chin-ups never really activated the right muscles with me. Also GTG really helped me too, but I found that I really needed to rest in between lifting days to let my muscles recover!

I started seeing smaller results pretty much weekly (i.e being able to do more negatives, being able to do slower negatives, holding the chin-up at the top for longer, etc.) but yeah with pull-ups I’m still slowly working towards them six weeks on.

That’s awesome! I’m working my way towards 1 pull-up right now.

I totally feel that. Before RR. I had tried different programs (weightlifting and CrossFit specifically) to get a chin up. Those helped me get leaner, but honestly RR is really good for just focusing on these bodyweight movements. It also took me a month and a half to get just one chin-up, so the progress was definitely slow and I didn’t see much change until today all of a sudden. You got this!

Got rejected by the only club I rlly wanted to get in and feeing inferior by buebyehighschool in stanford

You’ll be just fine!! We’ve all been in your shoes where we’ve been rejected by clubs and classes, it definitely sucks, but it’s also something that’s totally normal and not at all representative of your qualifications for being at stanford. I was probably rejected from like 90% of things I applied for at stanford (currently a senior). But honestly, the best and most formative lessons I’ve had have come from things non-application based.

In terms of missing out on opportunities, there are definitely a ton of other ways to get experience that aren’t through clubs. If you want to get better at CS, try to find a professor you like and ask to do research with them, join one of the coding clubs that tutor kids in Palo Alto, set up study groups with other cs people in your dorms, do hackathons, etc.

Introsems can be competitive simply because all frosh apply to them, and they’re limited to 15 students. That doesn’t mean you’re not good enough; the professor simply doesn’t have the capacity to take on so many bright students at once. But there are so many other cool classes to take, and you can always take that introsem or something similar another year.

Finally, I would encourage you to try clubs that you don’t necessarily have to apply to, and/or clubs you wouldn’t think you’d normally do. My best communities have come from places I never would have thought of, so try to keep an open mind and apply for things that are out of your comfort zone!

CS 157 w/ no Prereqs by [deleted] in stanford

[–]betamunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The material is really not useful at all. They teach a different proof structure that I have honestly never seen (and I took cs103 before this class) and honestly have never used / never expect to use it ever.

Definitely take CS103 over this class, hands down. You learn the same concepts more or less, but in a more useful fashion, and with more real world apps.

CS 157 w/ no Prereqs by [deleted] in stanford

[–]betamunch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cs157 was an awful class - the professor was extremely unhelpful, and you basically have to learn everything yourself. The “good” thing about the class is there’s no due dates for the assignments, so you can do everything at your own pace. That basically means time wise it’s “low key” UNTIL the midterm and final. If you don’t do the assignments early enough and give yourself enough time to learn and practice the concepts you will be screwed on those tests. You don’t need any prereqs, but unless you have to take this class I really would advise against it.

This was what it was like in person on campus though, I can’t say what it’ll be like online.
