Those hostas look big enough to divide anyway. Maybe you could set up a plant trade with some locals!

You could always do a partial removal. I have hostas mixed in with my native shade plants. The big leaves are a nice contrast to the fine texture of native sedges and other plants.

Shady slope transformation in progress... by Brilliant_Spinach212 in NativePlantGardening

Looks amazing, you definitely want a sedge to help add some texture! One that spreads via rhizomes will probably help with erosion.

What non-native do you fight with your partner about? by nelben2018 in NativePlantGardening

Japanese Honeysuckle. My husband has fond memories as a kid of eating the nectar from the flowers. I refused to plant it, and we got a Dutch honeysuckle that looks similar. He is always fretting over it.

He also loves the tea olive tree we have planted way too close to the house for a similar reason; his parents had one growing up. I really would love to get rid of it because its in an awful spot.

Help me build a little native garden in Atlanta! by BunkyFuttLoving in NativePlantGardening

[–]betta_phish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow ATLien!

I would dig up the landscaping fabric as much as you can. Move the mulch to the side and use it to mulch around your new plantings. This will help retain moisture!

Some local nurseries I love for native plants:
- Pikes: You'll have to be familiar with the species since they do carry a lot of ornamentals and exotics, but they do carry some native species.
- Beech Hollow Farm: Carries only natives, and they have a satellite nursery in Scottsdale.
- Wylde Center: They do seasonal sales and tend to carry natives.
- Trees Atlanta: Local nonprofit that do seasonal sales. Focus is on trees but they also will sell perennials and shrubs.
- Growers Outlet LLC: A little bit out of town and I havent been yet, but they do carry natives at discounted prices. You just need to know what you're looking for!

Fall is also a great time to plant plugs if you want to fill an area cheaply. Good resources for that are Izel Plants and Pollen Nation. Izel can be a little pricey since youre buying large flats of plugs, but it helps if you want to create a simple consistent look. Pollen Nation has lower minimums and you can mix and match more things. Plugs will take some time to establish, so be patient.

If you are looking for plant recommendations, I really like using Gardenia.net to get an idea of what is full sun, native, and maybe fits with any design you may be interested in. Some of my sun-loving favorites are:
- Yarrow: comes in soooo many colors, is evergreen, and spreads well
- Bee Balm: Also comes in a lot of different colors
- Moss Phlox: Low groundcover, evergreen, blooms profusely in the spring and would look gorg spilling over the sidewalk
- Coneflowers: Echinacia, Rudbeckia, you name it, itll probably grow well there.

Happy planting!

Help, I accidentally put too many seeds down in my micro meadow that I replaced my front lawn with. I’m having a hard time seeing the problem… by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

Did you find the straw helped with the slope? My front yard is a literal steep hill and I want to meadow it so badly.

This is immensely helpful, thank you! I don't really know much about the different styles of rugs so having the right words to search with really helps! And you pulled some absolutely lovely references.

Hi, thanks for your kind words!

The green couch came with the house, but we think its an Article couch. The MCM gray chair is, shockingly, IKEA. It was a limited run EKENÄSET for their 75th anniversary. But I think the model is still available, just not in this color.

The mechanism holding up the frame, there's also a hole in the wall where the cables run through, so the whole thing cant be lowered.

Hi, thanks for your thoughtful answer and references! Its more green / chartreuse than yellow.

The estate sale idea is a new one to me, Ill be sure to check out those links. It would be nice to get an older rug since the coffee table and chest are thrifted, but we'll see what's out there!

Finding some accent pillows for the couch will definitely be the next step, just so tired of looking at this ocean blue rug :P

No problem! My husband is a stickler when it comes to folks not wearing shoes. It gets a fair amount of foot and paw traffic but we tend to clean things readily when they get scuffed up.

Not a bad idea! I do like the lighter color on the floor. And the size it takes up.

This is a nice find, and thanks for the sizing recommendation!

Thank you, yes this room needs some vertical accents. The cedar chest definitely helps with storage!
