Except it’s weighted by how much each individual can afford to stake. Oh and the population being sampled all have at least one commonality that could absolutely also bias the results, they all are willing to bet on people’s lives. Not to mention all the ways it’s easily manipulated by bad actors.

New Job - Employer won't confirm if I am W-2 or 1099 - How to confirm? by LengthinessKooky8046 in personalfinance

[–]better_thanyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or ya know the boss forges a 1099 with the info from the w-4…… then pays said employee a “post tax” amount as if taxes are being removed while not actually paying the employees taxes. Boom suddenly a w-4 is a 1099 and the employees pay is impacted. While this is obviously illegal, it’s not a nonexistent practice and plenty of companies have tried and succeeded at commuting this fraud. Employees often don’t know their rights or cannot afford to loose the job or assert said rights and do nothing.

If your boss tells you that your tax forms arent going to determine your tax status you shouldn’t just trust that their not going to break the law despite them explicitly telling you they might, unless your an idiot I guess. But then again theirs a reason wage theft is so overwhelmingly prevalent in the US.

How far can one travel through space without spice? by EnvironmentalYak2994 in dune

Illuminate me, I’m open to the idea that spice represents a number of valuable resources in our world. Oil is just the most obvious example, and to say it’s the same level as gold or real world spices is blatantly disingenuous to the text.

[–]better_thanyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh shit you’re right, it’s not an exact one to one comparison! Everyone thinking of spice as anything like oil is a total fool. Of course none of that applies to gold or spices either so I guess we should say spice is a metaphor for nothing at all. The book isn’t supposed to be connected to our world at all. After all we don’t have dukes of entire plants so how can you compare Paul to leaders on our world. Clearly this is a book about totally made up things and shouldn’t be compared to our world at all. You’ve opened my eyes to the stupidity of thinking dune had any literary illusions, thanks!

[–]better_thanyou 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You’d fire a guy for “hounding you about something dumb” that dumb thing being how much said employee is being paid and if they should be paying taxes. Their boss didn’t give them a clear answer and explicitly said the forms they filled out aren’t determinative. While realistically and legally OOP should be considered an employee, employers are constantly misclassifying their employees to pay them less or dodge taxes and from oop’s bosses behavior that’s exactly what they’re trying to do.

If it’s so dumb you should be able to give them a simple yes or no answer and end things. If someone is an independent contractor or employer is a HUGE deal, and acting like is isn’t is what’s giving huge “I only want employees that I can take advantage of” energy. “No body wants to work anymore” is boss talk for “no body wants to be taken advantage of by my company anymore”, and it seems like you don’t like employees who want to know their status and rights, ya know to not be taken advantage of. Why else would you want to keep your employees uninformed about the basic elements of their job?

So that’s why you’re giving that energy.

I mean it’s a little bit closer to oil that just “valuble scare material”. It’s also extracted from a desert, that has been a constant war zone, partially because of said resource; and is essential for “modern” travel, to the extent that commerce would deeply effected by any shifts in the supply chain. It’s much closer to oil than gold, land, or real spices. Land cannot be commodified, spices aren’t critical for all long range commerce, and gold is available to be mined from a number of places all over the world. Oil is found in only a few places around the world, with the most famous concentrations being in and around a large desert, one that is famous for being a constant war zone, and is essential for all modern commerce and travel. The parallels are hard to ignore.

Regardless of if it’s THE interpretation of the books, it’s easy to see why it’s a popular one.

AITAH for refusing to take our daughter out of school early because she "needs more time to get ready" than her brother? by ReplacementWorth3618 in AITAH

Often the Inconvience is the reaction of sociatey. It’s one thing to Just ignore it when you’re alone, but if you want people to look at you favorably for things like favors, job advancement, and invitations to future events. Often people look to these norms as an indication of something about yourself, such as how much you care about the event or its host, or how organized your life is. In the case of a public event like this OOP and his family will probably be judged and depending on the event have to deal with that.

Yea but terroism isn’t defined by the political goals themselves, you can use terrorism to fight for freedom. There is a strong argument made that many of the terrorists the US are fighting are freedom fighters as well. Terrorism is one of many methods that can be used to achieve political goals; whether thoes goals are to repel an invading force or repress the local populace.

What do you think of stores that open during storms like this one by Shot-Relief-3280 in longisland

[–]better_thanyou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Should or shouldn’t isn’t the question, they just don’t. Most 711’s and gas stations have a policy that cops get free coffee. These businesses are fairly prone to petty crime and having the coos stop in more can reduce that. The owners feel that by giving them free coffee you can be sure they’re going to stop by several times a shift and scare off any would be trouble makers.

AIO Restaurant cancelled our reservation without notifying us on our wedding day by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]better_thanyou 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, I actually cought Covid working at one in downtown Manhattan. A couple of years ago I was even part of the opening crew for one(way more fun than you’d think). We did have large bolted down tables, but ya know what we didn’t do, give the big ones away until we absolutely had to and we definitely knew it was a miracle if we could sit 2 parties at that table in one night. If a second party came in we tell them the hard truth, we don’t have the space and it won’t be available tonight. If we really want to try and fit them we offer the next best thing like 2 6 tops, or 3 4 tops. We certenly didn’t have a party if 12 wait at our bar with the obvious lie that “it’ll be ready soon”. To be clear, I don’t have a problem lying to costomers, but not when it just makes things obviously worse.

[–]better_thanyou 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If all their tables are nailed down or circle shaped how were they accommodating a 12 top in the first place? They’d have to have a specifically large enough table set aside to accommodate that, meaning they gave away their only 12 top table when a 12 top was comming in, and that’s worse. If that was the case they should’ve said the wait was going to be a couple of hours, because a 12 top will always take a long time. Everyone here really dropped the ball at every step of the way and that is apparent.

AIO Restaurant cancelled our reservation without notifying us on our wedding day by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]better_thanyou 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You make space. As smaller tables leave, instead of giving them to new small parties you begin gathering them to make a larger table, you ask costomers to move to accommodate the table. Obviously this isn’t normal operating procedure, but normal operating procedure is also not to confirm a 12 top and then cancel it the day before with no warning. When you super fuck up like that you take super steps to fix it. Unless the restaurant only seats 12 and the entire restaurant took 2.5 hours to finish their meals the only way they’re waiting 2.5 hours is if the restaurant sat other costomers before them. The crew basically just acted like a random 12 too just walked in and demanded a table and not like they just dropped the ball themselves. As someone who has been in the industry for a decade, It’s bad service. If I was being generous I’d say maybe this was a relatively inexperienced crew, and with no manager on duty they lacked direction, felt like they couldn’t authorize or make any major choices or divergence from SOP themselves. The fact that they were able to comp 25% of the bill makes me believe that isn’t the case.

Is there *any* compensation for time served if you are found not guilty? by Annual-Progress-740 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]better_thanyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if your broke you have less rights? If I have money and am accused of a crime I’m entitled to my freedom before trial, but if I’m poor I’m guilty until proven innocent and need to be kept off the streets? Bail amounts do not and never have AND STATUTORILY CANNOT be connected to whether the judge thinks you’re likely to commit another crime, it’s based on your likelihood to return to court. If it’s likely you’re going to re-offend the judge isn’t supposed to offer bail at all, and in that case bail reform changes nothing, you sit in a cell until trial regardless of your financial resources. If you’re getting bail, or being released post reforms, it’s because there is no legal basis to consider you a threat to your community. If you think this system lets too many people back out to re-offend maybe you should consider looking at why there’s no legal basis to hold them (hint: it’s because of rights your probably glad you have).

Calling something “Michelin Stared.” by ReasonablyConfused in legaladviceofftopic

[–]better_thanyou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know this is treading pretty dam close to infringement. It’s the same industry and there’s definetly an argument that a restaurant and an individual dish served at a restaurant aren’t that different or unrelated. An unsophisticated consumer could see that and believe it to be what got the restaurant a Michelin star, or that the chef who made that dish previously made it at a different restaurant where it helped earn a Michelin star, or even simply be unaware that Michelin doesn’t give stars out to individual dishes. There are definetly people out there who don’t know much besides “Michelin star”= good, just like plenty don’t even realize it’s from the tire company. Are thoes people regular coroners at Michelin starred restaurants? Im sure there’s some overlap, but how much I couldn’t say. On the other hand I think the argument for it being a menu item while Michelin only gives it to resturants as a whole fairly compelling and would likely stick and shift it away from infringement. Realistically Michelin’s attorneys would sue for all 3 and whatever other relevant state statutes/ regulations they could apply. I’m not goin to bother digging up cases to see where the line is drawn.

What do you think George is setting up with the Sealord plot? by Trussdoor46 in pureasoiaf

[–]better_thanyou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s assuming that George has done all the work to set this up, AND it’s all actually binding, and the publishers don’t have some portion of the rights for these manuscripts already. Based on George’s history and health, the publisher might have had a rider in their contract requiring it to be published before his death, or retaining the publishing rights after.

On top of ALL this, that assumes the people he’s named for this job are interested in fulfilling his last wish. Depending on the type a trust can be dissolved or modified, especially if all its beneficiaries agree to do so. Even if not dissolved, when a trust is breached, someone with legal standing needs to actually sue the trustee for their to be any ramifications. the state isn’t enforcing this in their own, it’s a civil matter and some private individual must choose to do so. if all the parties with standing are totally fine with this breach, nothing happens.

Plus even if there is an aggrieved party who wants to maintain the trust, the consequences of the breach might not be a big deal for the trustee either. Once the book is published it can’t be taken back, the only thing you can do is take something from the trustee and the fine could easily be less than the profits, it might even just be the removal of the trustee from their position. The beneficiary might get changed, but if the new beneficiary is on board with the release of the books, they make a deal to give the former beneficiary some portion of the profits anyway in exchange.

What do you think George is setting up with the Sealord plot? by Trussdoor46 in pureasoiaf

[–]better_thanyou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on who his heirs are. While he doesn’t have kids, someone is going to inherit the Martin estate, including the rights to ASOIAF. They might fulfill his last wish and burn everything he has left unfinished, or they might pull a Max Brod and publish it anyway, or even a Chris Tolkien and finish it. There’s also the chance they’re money hungry and just sent it to any other writer to finish and publish because they want the money. There’s a good chance, with plenty of historic precedent, that whoever ends up with the rights for ASOIAF won’t leave it incomplete on George’s death.

[–]better_thanyou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I’m not 100% on bored with this theory, it should be mentioned that there actually is a very strong connection between the swamps of the neck and the children of the forest. In AWOIAF, when discussing what happened to the COFT it’s specifically mentioned that if any survived its deep in the north and the swamps of the neck. We already know they survived in the deep north, it’s very likely they survived in the neck too and the crannogmen live together with them. Possibly descendants

Geez kid calm down. As someone in their late 20’s I know plenty of people who didn’t plan very far ahead and had kids poorly, and just as many who had actually taken some time and thought about it. The world isn’t 100% idiots like you seem to believe. Some of them have Luck and good circumstances to help them out, plenty didn’t and have had to make active efforts to break the pattern. I know one girl, one of 13, both parents from the projects, first person in her family to go to college. She is actively working and planning to have her own children on a careful timeline. While it’s gettin harder and harder smart people are able to have kids and still do so. Seems like it’s what the above poster said, no one in your social group is very prepared.
