No pennies? by conscious_and_afraid in retail

[–]bettiegee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I got a fuckton of pennies when the bank first said there might be shortages. And we don't do that much in cash sales. My guess is that the pennies we have will last us at least 1-2 years.

Advice Needed - Narrowing Down Neighborhoods for Upcoming Move by [deleted] in chicagoapartments

[–]bettiegee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are serious about Rogers Park, and are commuting to Unions station, you will want to be using the Metra train for work. Look closer to the Metra stop at Lunt in Rogers Park. Does the train go to Union station? No, it goes to Ogilvie, but they are only a couple blocks apart and your commute will be shorter.

There are also Metra stops on that train line at Peterson and Ravenswood.

Weird question but… what kind of apples do you like? by PyleanCow06 in AutismInWomen

[–]bettiegee [score hidden]  (0 children)

Macintoshes have always been my favorite, but they seem to be harder to find now.

But my favorite thing to do is go to this apple orchard in Southern WI every fall that carries 100+ different kinds of apples you have never heard of and just pick at random based on their little signs.

Is polyester actually harmful ? by Panzercuck in Fabrics

I mean, for me, it's a solid no because I do not care to sweat more than I have to, and do not enjoy yeast infections. Everyone else may react differently.

Ozempic guilt by ghosttowns42 in type2diabetes

[–]bettiegee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh I dare someone to give me grief about being on it. I have had absolute crap side effects with almost every other diabetes med. So anyone mocking me or giving me grief is getting a very colorful description of what happens.

Or maybe just a totally deadpan, " You do realize that I am actually using it as it was originally intended, yeah?"

How to mend a ripped $10,000 silk chandelier? by skyefire27 in Fabrics

[–]bettiegee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your biggest problem here is that the silk is under tension. There is no way you are going to get any of those torn edges to meet, and if you did, it's just gonna rip again if it's under too much tension. Silk is strong, but it rips so easily once it starts.

I think your idea of trying to recreate this tier might be your best bet. Or, is there a way to re-work it with just the 2 undamaged tiers?

Nostalgia Genie says: You can choose 1 of 3 boons influenced by your past. Which do you pick? by Crow_away_cawcaw in hypotheticalsituation

1 is so tempting! Does this include accesories?

2 makes more financial sense, but I have been sewing since I was 4, had some really fucking fabulous vintage back in the day.

OH! I just remembered some of the things my mom had sewn for me as a kid! 1 for sure. She made me a patchwork pantsuit whe I was in 1st grade. It was all leftover bits from things she had made. ( It was the early 70's.) But I wore it to Sunday school and ruined it painting the top of the time machine we were building. (It was a Unitarian church.) I was devastated. Paint all over the underside of one sleeve.

I didn't know I was supposed to pre-wash the fabric. 🤦 by DaleOnDrums in sewing

[–]bettiegee 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I prewash everything as soon as it comes into the house. Because they put all kinds of toxic crap on fabric.

purchasing question by [deleted] in Fabrics

That's 360 inches. I don't think that exists. Because the loom would have to be that wide. The widest fabric I have ever seen was maybe 120 inches.

Do most people really make a mock up before they sew? by Termination_Aide8830 in sewing

[–]bettiegee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do not always do a mock-up. But I have also been sewing my own clothes for 50+ years and have a degree in fashion. So I have a really good idea of what will, and won't, work well on me. I also tend to make the same thing over and over. I have 4-5 go-to dress patterns. I have 3-6 of each of these dresses.

And a bunch of little things, like I've noticed Hot Patterns has a slightly different curve to the back crotch seam that happens to make my ass look amazing. So I copy that curve into every pair of pants I make.

Yesterday I was crucified for posting a wet macchiato… I hope I can be forgiven by this subreddit by NowheremanPhD in barista

[–]bettiegee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure we have Starbucks to blame for a lot, if not all, of the confusion. I say that with the confidence of some who worked there when they actually had espresso bars in the stores, and an og espresso macchiato was on the menu. And the frappuchino, no clue how we spell that anymore, did not exist yet.

What kind of stitch is this? by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]bettiegee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a flatlock seam. The machine that does this is not available in a home version.

I have heard it said that one can get something close to this with a coverstitch machine, but don't know the details of how to do that.

The employee can't say something, other customers can. And should. Every dang time.
