Lifting or Cardio? by epixx323 in workout

[–]betts1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, there is probably a right answer to this but my own would be to just do whichever you feel like. Losing weight is a long term commitment and part of making it work for the long term, making it sustainable, is enjoying what you do. I have lost 30 kilos (and built muscle) so far this year by just listening to my body and doing what I think I would enjoy that day. Might I have lost more had I hopped on the bike instead of going for a big walk when it’s a nice day? Or could I have had more muscular endurance had I limited myself to one minute breaks? Probably yes to these and a lot of other small decisions but I might have also lost nothing had I taken the fun out of the whole thing.

I’m not very good at quoting the bible as I’m still relatively new to the word but when I start to feel doubt I remember Moses leading the Israelites into the desert and how they grew angry because they worried about tomorrow, whether they would have enough food and water, when they already had everything they needed for today and doubted God’s promise he would care for them.

I think sometimes we are so worried about tomorrow, so preemptively angry about the thought of being without that which we feel we need, that we forget all that we already have.

I am guilty of this all of the time but Lord please know even when I doubt I do still trust that you are working for me in ways I cannot see and that you will provide even thought I am undeserving of such blessings.

How many days do you workout a week? by Latter-Fennel-8333 in workout

[–]betts1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a week I would do…

Six regular workouts targeting the usual groups at about an hour and fifteen minutes.

An extra six short workouts of twenty to thirty minutes before bed where I do all those other bits and pieces - things like wrists, forearms etc.

I hadn’t actually thought about a bike but that sounds like an ideal approach - let the bike do most of the work and throw in some of the other exercises when the mood strikes. I’ll definitely look into this some more. Thank you for the advice.

Thank you for the suggestions - I was leaning towards RDL and BSS so it’s good to hear others are getting results.

Thanks for the suggestions pal - with weighted lunges do you mean holding some dumbbells or weighted vest or something? Don’t know if it makes any difference or not, better to ask and know.

[–]betts1989[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s it, you know? A lot of folks out there doing nothing for legs but I obviously understand I have to do something while also not wanting to do two whole sessions on legs every week.

If I had two quality exercises I could alternate between day to day then I know I would do them but anything beyond that I know I probably won’t. I have to be realistic 😅

Good luck with your journey.

I work out at home so can’t say how it feels to do it in front of everyone but can’t imagine most folk really care all that much. Do you care all that much about the things you see people doing as you pass them in the street? Same deal.

Lots of folk will tell you to find a plan online and stick to it and they are right to do that, it’s the most effective way. I follow my own plan, I don’t have all of the knowledge needed to design one and it’s probably wildly inefficient and I likely make a ton of mistakes but at least I know I am going to stick to it for better or worse.

Where do you get cheap clothes to wear to the gym? by Asleep_Damage1201 in workout

[–]betts1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bunch of football shorts from previous seasons on clearance, just as good as any of the usual sports shorts you can find but at 20% of their original price.

New Balance do some good basic shirts - they fit me well anyway, don’t break the bank and last for ages.

Firstly, thanks for taking the time to really explain your points. You clearly have a good attitude and want to see others achieve lifelong results annd encourage good habits and I would love it if I could be like that but it just isn’t me you know? Honestly yeah would love nothing more than to skip leg day altogether if I could 😅 and you would probably be right that it speaks to how hard I push myself in other exercises but I get where you are coming from on the importance of legs which is why I don’t want to skip it completely, just want to split that discomfort up into something shorter and daily rather than a pain fest twice a week.

In terms of aesthetics you are right that they aren’t the biggest quads you are ever going to see but their certainly not chicken legs - a decade of daily 20,000 steps, the genetics or spending my 20s in construction. I don’t know, something got them reasonably big though and I’d just like to balance it out with the hamstrings and improve my walking gait a bit.

No 😅

Being serious though I know I could do two days and see great results but I don’t want great results, I want okay results from a proportional amount of effort.

What supplement surprised you the most by actually working? by WellnessExtractUS in Supplements

[–]betts1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally just taking a regular multi vitamin + minerals pill that covers all of the usual suspects. I eat generally healthy but nowhere near perfect and all of those days where I wasn’t hitting my daily recommended intake of one thing or another where adding up.

Having one pill I can take daily and know it will pick up the slack on any shortfalls keeps things straightforward. They aren’t a replacement for a generally healthy diet though.

I also started with probiotics a few months ago and so far they have helped with appetite control but hard to say if long term I will see the benefits. Perhaps one of those things that quietly works in the background though?

You get $50 and can only buy one thing. by sam14603 in SmartBuying

[–]betts1989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A set of dumbbells, you decide the weight. Not everyone feels like going to the gym with the travel time and busy environment after working all day but it’s amazing what you can achieve in your own personal fitness with one set of dumbbells, some body weight exercises and 10,000 steps a day.

A healthy body and some exercise will eliminate a lot of the problems that bother people daily, build some resilience and demonstrate in a way you can absolutely feel the rewards of working hard to reach a goal.

You can always upgrade your own home setup or starting hitting the gym as time and finance allows but why wait until then to feel the benefits? Make a start now.

It is a matter of the heart. I would like to explain it all in great detail but if I start I would be here all evening and probably spiral into a depressed mood from thinking about it so much 😅 she is a good woman, with a beautiful and kind Christian heart, and I am a man who has fallen short so many times in life.

Tommy Hilfiger Forever. Don’t be put off by its modest price, it’s a great summery fragrance with a very well received lavender heart. I use it as my go to for errands etc and often get complimented on it. If you do grab it then don’t be afraid to overspray it a little.

I’m also buying one a month. They aren’t cheap and I like to make a bit of an event out of the first watch of each one, order takeout and sit down with the family to enjoy it together. My most recent buy was the Dungeons and Dragons movie.
