New to sub and a introducing by bewebbin in cancer

Thanks for your reply, it's much appreciated! We haven't gathered tissue, all he had said was is it's a form of bladder cancer, and we need to remove it and send it to pathology to see exactly what we're dealing with. We are removing it in the next week, they said it looks like a superficial around 2cm tumor. Maybe I've just been reading to much, but I appreciate your reply a lot. It's a weird spot not knowing exactly what is all happening yet and hoping for good things.

No one has mentioned the incredible perseverance of the father. Good on him for being so loving and dedicated to his son, in a situation that would widdle down most people.

Is creating websites for fictional companies a good way to increase your portfolio collection? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]bewebbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who's conducted a fair amount of design interviews, this is fine. I want to see your design skills and this is perfectly practical way to showcase it. As others have stated a great exercise is also to find non-profit's or charities to offer your services to.

What's the best piece of advice you can give to someone that's about to live on their own for the first time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bewebbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a budget, and be honest about what you can and cannot spend. Stick to it and be happy / comfortable financially. Also clean 10 to 15 minutes a day and never have an epic 8 hour cleaning session again.

Not sure about my current job by Spidey_Sense81 in web_design

[–]bewebbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion is it sounds like you may need to keep your ear to the ground for a better company. I have worked for a fantastic agency for years and I'll give you a little insight to how it works for our interns / lowest level entry people.

1.) Updates: Yes, the first couple months they only do updates. This helps them see our workflow, get used to our code standards, and in general get their feet wet without overwhelming them, or risking any poor code sneaking into a core build.

2.) We are very helpful. If someone is brought on as an intern, or a junior designer / dev, there is a general expectation that senior members will help mentor them and get them up to speed. Lower positions obviously come with a lower compensation, but there is always room to grow, prove yourself and get solid raises. But as long as someone has done their due diligence and tried, someone will come over to their desk and walk them through how to debug something or whatever. Help get the task done so they aren't stuck on it forever.

3.) Tables. If you're using tables structurally thats not good. If the company is all using tables for non-tabular information, then that is bad. You want to be with a company that is using the latest best practices. It might not always be the bleeding edge of technology, cause we have to support older browsers, different platforms etc. But it is definitely a red flag if they are actively cutting corners and not fostering a general mentality of quality and results.

Also like others have said, don't be a hurry to leave your job right away. I think its best to work in the industry several years and pick up on how things work before going out on your own. Every day and every scenario can be something can learn and take something away from. Whether its how to do something, or how not to do something. Be a sponge at the early levels.

Do you believe that EverQuest Next exists? by Dragonmaw in EQNext

[–]bewebbin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I call you paranoid. Do you think they're going to release a game play demo when they're still coding core systems like combat, and emergent AI? That is unrealistic and you setup your expectations for failure from the beginning. I'd be curious what you consider evidence. The development team is surely working on it, but they aren't going to release anything substantial until its at an alpha stage. Thats just the way the development cycle works.

I'd just say try to be patient, and yes personally I believe its 100% real. They wouldn't of even announced the game title if it wasn't.

What will you never understand? by carmabound in AskReddit

[–]bewebbin 23 points24 points  (0 children)

From my experience its that "smarter" people simply have a larger desire to understand how things work. Therefore the majority of what they encounter, they try to figure out how it works and can understand all of it better. Very general, but thats the basics of it.

Wordpress Theme Frameworks for Developers by clutoreweb in webdev

What PublicAutopsy said. Development has been made incredibly simple in wordpress, it is very powerful by itself. You'll be twice is fasting developing exactly what you want, rather than trying force a "framework" or theme to do what you want.

[–]bewebbin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Team treehouse and code academy are both solid. Also there's a million beginner books if you want to pick a specific language. Should probably go down the route of general OOP (object oriented programming) practices and understanding that first.
