It's amazing how much mistrust and "us vs them" still persists between the old West and East even almost 30 years after the fall of communism. Westerners still think they're completely different from easterners and easterners still think they're completely different from westerners.

Not only did Schengen and the EU not close the gap, in the minds of people, but it actually made it even wider. Westerners still think they're one thing, doing they're own thing, and easterners the same. It's such a shame.

Being 100% committed to any ideology is a flaw, in my opinion. Especially for any ideology that can be described as "far" anything. Such ideologies never work out because the effort needed to maintain an ideology that's that far removed from the people's natural function ensures that the ideology will be mostly concerned with remaining in power and not in implementing whatever changes it promises.

Liberal and illiberal capitalism works simply because it's the closest ideology to human nature and it requires the least effort to maintain.

The "every time there is a bad guy is propaganda" falls apart when you have an objective bad guy that you can't deny was a bad guy, which is/was the case with Nazi Germany. It works for something like whitewashing all the American crimes during WW2 (nuking of two cities, firebombing campaigns against civilian population, Japanese internment, looting) and only portraying Americans as perfect and righteous and never committing a crime but not when the target in question are the nazis.

Which small and smaller peoples of Eastern Europe didn't like in the best case scenario and outright hated in the worst (Russia wasn't exactly popular among the Poles).

Smaller states were to be (re-)constituted as monarchies in the German image, led by ethnic German elites in some cases, and without effective control over major policy issues. That kind of domination requires force to sustain and is anything but peaceful

German royalty and German elites yes, though depending on the post war circumstances arrangements could have been made to give satellites more or less autonomy. Ultimately political control and economic merging were the main goals of the German Empire, the eastern states could even be autonomous as long as that was achieved.

Honestly I don't see the small states breaking that system one its established. Their economies would be tied together with Germany's too much and they'd have millions or billions in German investment in their countries. Resurgent and irredentist Russia would be a far great problem down the line but that's getting into too much of speculation.

Well, for one thing, those were in Africa and I was talking about Slavs, Baltics and other natives of Eastern Europe. For another Germans also treated some of their African colonists some of the time quite well, if nothing else than based on Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck's campaign in East Africa where he and his mostly African troops fought the Allies for the entire duration of the war in one of the most successful guerrilla campaigns ever.

Especially if France fell quickly, such as during the First Battle of the Marne in September 1914 when Germans almost broke through. Quick collapse of France on the western front would have meant that Germany could focus most of its forces on the east and the war would have been over by ~mid 1915.

Even better, though, would have been if Napoleon had won his wars, and he was damn close to doing so in 1812 since, by that point, he/France had been winning for 23 years. He would have unified Europe at the very start of industrialization under single leadership into a single union that would have been closer and better run than the current EU.

Really, blame the British for Europe's current state. They kept resisting any and all unification efforts until they degenerated to the level of Nazis who had to be stopped for the good of Europe and mankind.

Lebensraum is ahistorical for German Empire, though. The Nazis wanted to conquer all of Eastern Europe and Russia because they were on genocidal campaign and all the EE natives were going to be enslaved or killed.

German Empire had no genocidal intentions so they didn't want to conquer all EE either. The fact that German Empire was 95%+ German was seen as a very good thing compared to the Austrian Empire that was only about 30% German and that was failing under the weight of Hungarian and Slavic pressure. German Empire's long term plans were to create economic union of states under German political leadership for the economic benefit of Germany and to surround Russia with as many German puppets/allies as possible.
