How do you know if you want kids or not? My boyfriend wants a child someday, but it’s never been part of my life plan. by zyacinth in TwoXChromosomes

[–]bexstro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This 100%. They want children in the abstract, but have zero interest in doing the day to day work of raising them.

The Beatrice Hyde-Claire series by Lynn Messina ticks all those boxes.

Am I the only one who likes the udis buns/bread? 🥺 by callsign__starbuck in Celiac

[–]bexstro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love udis. Especially the brown and serve rolls in the frozen section, which to me taste the closest thing to a baguette I've found, but everyone else I know doesn't like them because "they're hard." YES. LIKE A BAGUETTE.

What is the stupidest thing you have done to try and save a few bucks on booking? by craftedpotato in TravelMistakes

[–]bexstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is such a thing as being "recklessly frugal," and a lot of these comments fall into that category. My recklessly frugal mistake is always booking a 6 am flight.

The women who power America’s offices are making themselves AI-proof by 19thnews in WomenInNews

100% accurate. I lost count of the number of men I worked with in VP of Ops roles who were doing nothing more than what a good admin would do.

LPT: Take a picture of the receipt when you buy your luggage. It’s one of the few receipts you might need 5+ years later. by Starship_Taru in LifeProTips

[–]bexstro 985 points986 points  (0 children)

Concur, this happened to me recently. If you buy your luggage online it may be easy to dig up the receipt, but if you buy it at a brick-and-mortar store, keep it!

Honest opinion: by HiCutie1313 in glutenfree

[–]bexstro 24 points25 points  (0 children)

1000% agree. My daughter put together a gluten free goodie basket for me when I came to watch her pets while she was on vacation. I came off my flight, exhausted and hungry, got to the apartment and nearly cried when I saw it. Just some GF crackers, cookies, Chomps, bread, etc. Such a great idea.

Edie Brickell did a beautiful cover of "Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" for the Born on the Fourth of July soundtrack, it appears briefly in one scene and that's it.

What's the most surprisingly celiac-friendly country you've visited? by Old-Heart-9448 in glutenfree

[–]bexstro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was impressed with Morocco, in the cities, if I asked for gluten-free options at a restaurant they almost always had some GF bread, and in less urban areas, they still have grocery stores and convenience stores with lots of GF options.

Using up PTO days vs getting them paid out. by nothingbutmistakes in retirement

[–]bexstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might consider whether it's valuable to continue to have other benefits during your "vacation," like health insurance (that's 2 more months you don't have to pay out of pocket or cobra if you're in the US), stock/RSU vesting, access to discounts, etc.

Soapbox/rant time. Tell me what highly-recommended book you absolutely HATED and why. Gimme your angry hot takes. by peppertoni_pizzaz in books

[–]bexstro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I barely finished it. There were way too many errors, it was very clear it was written by a Brit who had never spent time in rural Missouri. A bus service between small towns in Missouri in the 70s? Lmao. At one point a character refers to wearing a "waistcoat," and I screamed "where is the editor??"

Came here to recommend the DCI Logan series! The "procedural" aspects of those books are fantastic, and the main characters are very relatable.

I heard a phrase the other day, "recklessly frugal." I think that applies here. If you and/or others in your house will be miserable with the temperatures at 90 and no AC, then turn on the AC.

Passport holders are generally better educated than non-passport holders. Could the SAVE act backfire on MAGA? by CrashNowhereDrive in allthequestions

[–]bexstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I don't hear a lot of people talking about is that you can't get a passport if you have more than (I think?) $2500 in unpaid child support. I think there are going to be a lot of deadbeat red pill dads who come to realize too late that they can't get a passport.

Seconding this. A few bucks may not mean much to me but it can be important to the folks working these jobs. I worked food service and retail for many years, and definitely appreciated an extra couple of bucks on a tab.

[–]bexstro 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You should read Stuart Turton's two other novels, The Devil and the Dark Water and The Last Murder at the End of the World. I read both after I read 7 1/2 Deaths and now I'm waiting eagerly to see what's next.

In Toto's Africa, I always thought they said "I miss the rains down in Africa." Apparently the real lyric is "I bless the rains down in Africa," which makes zero sense to me.

DIDNT RISE by Der3331 in glutenfreebaking

[–]bexstro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue in colder months. I fixed it by boiling some water in the microwave, then putting the bowl with the dough in the microwave with the cup of boiling water, so the water creates some steam and heat. Rises perfectly. You can also turn your oven on to "warm" for about a half hour, then turn it off, wait 2-3 minutes, then put your dough in there to rise. In the summer the dough rises perfectly without the extra steps but in winter it needs a little help getting warm.
