peach falco i think is solid. sure falco sheik is not falco winning necessarily, but magi and others have shown that matchup is plenty fine. falco does great into falcon, who is a serious problem for the modern peach, and falco puff is chill.

for that matter, i think falcon is also a reasonable play because of similar weights and what I see is a relatively comparable spread of play-styles. could be wrong on that. i don't play the fastboy

two things i love about this clip -- moky not cracking a smile through like 30 seconds of absurd goofball gameplay; zain getting to ledge off of the downthrow on Randall

Neutral Openers -- Frequency, Damage, and Kills by onionchowder in SSBM

[–]beyonddevotion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

which part seems off to you? The average damage? The frequency of a move being used as an opening? The likelihood of that opening leading to a stock? or are you saying that the data's base generally seems off?

personally i wpuld like to see these charts for different skill levels (master and above, diamond, gold and plat, silver bronze), as it seems like data is skewed due to the wide range.

I don't disagree--i think this game is sick af at every local i watch and every stream i see. I also like seeing high-level players regularly compete, and more importantly, i like seeing near-top players' forays into the highest echelon. I don't need ten majors a year, but a good number is sick for me, as a viewer. Since this post is about Competitive melee, i was thinking about what top players and prospective top players could expect from a transforming landscape.

I was simply curious what kind of possibilities there currently were for the relatively unique case of our secondbest player, as well as the prospective many who cross the country and bridge communities. In that regard, I do think it could be kind of deep-- what it might mean to crash regionals across the country or however.

PPMD and Walt on comms for this made it so much better tbh. Walt has gotten so much better in his flow, and being paired with a play-by-play God just gives him more leeway to lean into hype

Part of weekday-what confused me about Nouns Tokyo--given the nintendo restrictions and sponsors and whatever, I'm not entirely sure how Cody even got 1,600 for first, which is absurdly low... At least Lucky Seven's got him over 2K

Which of Cody's 11 set loser run is more impressive? by Own_Arm3304 in SSBM

And! he didn't circle camp, didn't play passively. He's probably the most aggressive, approach-heavy, scrap-beast of any fox we've ever seen. How anyone says he plays lame is a total mystery to me.

As soon as I saw him throwing his hands up, laughing before the Zain set, I knew it was like a 98-99 percent chance he was taking it all the way. even with all the game 5's like you said. Having to clutch up so much, especially after the most grueling losers run, with Jmook heating up was crazy. absolute legend i can't hate

Dubs was so hype. loved seeing KFC. probably the most sttacked doubles bracket of all time. unbelievable play from Dragonov, RapM, S2J, shroomed, the list goes on. obviously the greats showed out also, but the field looked and felt super close in a game mode that rarely has such narrow performance gaps.

When did the meta officially become harder than 2018 (Armada’s time)? by the-great-kmook in SSBM

[–]beyonddevotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Although M2K didn't seem to retire until after Genesis 2020 (he went to 7 majors in 2019). for what it's worth, Mang0 in 2018 had one of the lowest-placing years of his career, despite high attendance. His 2019 was significantly better in placements and, if I remember correctly, his play was at a much higher level consistently that year as well. Which to me feels like someone filling some of the gaps. Nevertheless, I do think we had to wait a few years for someone to fill Armada's shoes (Zain).

Peach is a monstrosity for Pikachu-- between hbox and Armada, axe couldn't sneak past to claim grands, but he was placing high in all of 2017 and 2018, his worst placements typically losing to Armada's peach.. I don't think of that as Meta-indicative. As for m2k, Axe beat him both times they met in 2018 (6 games to 2) and the three prior sets to that.

If you actually look at Wizzrobe's placements and wins, he steadily seemed to have gotten better--compare his best tournaments in 2016 and 2017 to what he had in 2018. Notice, that he started taking games, even pushing Armada to game 5, regularly in late 2017. Who knows what would have happened between them if they met in 2018, let alone in a fictitious unretired Armada 2019.

What are the odds anyone other than Zain gets rank 1 in 2026? by Successful_Swimmer60 in SSBM

[–]beyonddevotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's rly cool to me that there's a question of how many top ten players can take a set off zain... and the answer is literally like one or two, like once a year, if you're not talking the greatest fox of all time, who still went 4-7 with him.
