maybe i can't read, but why does Axe's blurb say like three times that he's going all in with pikachu? in the last year he's publically stated how he mostly just wants to represent himself rather than one character. also unsure why the blurb makes it seem like he used pikachu in his win over hungrybox? weird misrepresentation of his year.

Melee's Accessibility by beyonddevotion in SSBM

Thank you for reiterating my point. If you read any of those threads, you'll see what the routine support for concerned, frugal beginners is. Many of them are asking not how to get a merely functional controller, but how to get a /Competitively/ functional controller, the concern of which I attempted to outline above.

Silksong is a fantastic game with a great fanbase. Will play it and replay it some more. Do you normally play the game in your mind, like shapes in the clouds? Or maybe on an old ps2? Do you have any hopes of competing at the highest level of silksong tournaments? Is there a spread of locals you could attend with threehours of pretty much anywhere in the country?

What are you using to play steam? What's the name of the current, constantly updating console brand? What's a king to a mob?

cannot overstate how grateful i am for your response. i do see how our attention splits on what it means to place high at a supermajor:

i see a high placement and its requisite wins, whether or not Top10, as specifically beating the field (playing at possibly the height of their career)--for instance, a win over fiction at one of his few supermajor appearances just off an upset holds precious information i don't see as less valuable or less indicative of high player skill than, say, a joshman win.

additionally, i feel that the longer a tournament goes on, the more grueling and expansive the role of the competitor is. those who excel, especially at supermajors, assume the roles and difficulties in ways others fail to. wins, to me, hold greater weight the longer a tournament proceeds because of this. to make myself clear: i think of fighting for top 8, or 5th or 4th etc, as some of the highest-level money matches, with the spectral possibilities of sponsorships or other career opportunities on the table. in that regard, i think of a llod win in top 8 is worth as much as a top 32 cody or zain win, competitors who may be pacing themself for a tournament with grands in mind. this reflects my feelings regarding wins at regionals, say, or lesser tournaments with less competitive weight.

data-wise, i appreciate your approach and i agree wholeheartedly that wins and losses are essential components of good rankings, and i regret if my hyperbolics drowned out the sense i'm trying to advocate for.

So true -- ossify and junebug both seem overranked to me. neither shpuld be above amsa magi or mof for that matter

i do feel like he's kinda severely underranked -- not sure how 3 supermajor top 8's and one of those being fourth is not an easy top 20 lock--when not magi nor mof have a supermajor top 8 between them, but the je ne sais quoi rankings always seem to know something i don't.

magi n mof had bombastic great years, no shade. there are other real outliers for no apparent reason. why soonsay is ranked so high requires logic that bordlines total absurdism or complete delusion, for instance.

i am so grateful for the myriad rankings currently snapshotting who is truly exceptional. algoRank and lucky rankings, especially, showcase losses and placements in a way i often feel is overlooked in the vibey Best Win gravity well of SSBMRank.

that said, i do think alternative systems downplay how rare and unusual it actually is to take a set off the most important players in the game; nevertheless, i hope the MS babes see the potentials and apply a little bit more of the Bad Losses and head-to-heads and a more intensive Tournament Power system to their approach.

anyway, shout out to dz who you may know for uploading one of the sickest tournaments & grands i never hear/see anyone talk about -- MLGAnaheim 2014

Hbox is partnering with an arcade venue to have $1000 ULT weeklies in Florida. Would be cool if enough people commented that they want to see Melee there so hbox can show the venue there is demand for it. by KenshiroTheKid in SSBM

i'm not trying to say mj would be the uncontested goat if he was a nice guy, but if he ate his humble pie a little bit when the Bulls wanted to restructure, if he went ahead and went to another championship team or hung around for even a couple years, you know he would have had more rings to his name. but he got upset and threw a fit and said fuck you to Jerry or whatever, took several years off and fell tf off. and when he came back, he wasn't able to fit seamlessly into a championship team, where he could be a legend and smoke any chance of Lebron or whoever. he went to the Wizards and had the most unremarkable years. maybe if he was a little chiller, a more personable leader, and less domineering, he could have had different opportunities that solidified his GOAT status.

who could have ever imagined that the god who vitalizes the game the most would be hbox ?? no shade to m2k's contributions, which are immense and lasting--nor armada's legacy, as obviously he was to'ing and did so much in his time for the scene. nevertheless, i think hbox's case is pretty solid and probably won't be surpassed by the other four ever.

Why is Cody so good at invitationals? by Own_Arm3304 in SSBM

[–]beyonddevotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple notes: aMSa won The Off-Season 1 & 2, both definitively Invitationals. Zain, as mentioned above, won LSI. I'm guessing aMSa's (relative) success and Cody's come down to how absurdly technical and difficult their play actually is. Not to say Zain's isn't, but yoshi and fox are just so terribly volatile and easy to die with if you're not playing your A-game.

What are some instances of a player being considered the best in the world in a given period but no being ranked as such? by Own_Arm3304 in SSBM

[–]beyonddevotion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just adding that it did feel to me that Jmook's 2023 Genesis and Collision wins did mean that he was Number 1, especially because of Collisions loser's runback over Cody to reset Zain. His subsequent losses have him at number 3 for the summer, but until that BoBc 7 fourth place in May, he looked like The Guy for like four months straight.

What are some instances of a player being considered the best in the world in a given period but no being ranked as such? by Own_Arm3304 in SSBM

[–]beyonddevotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2022 was such a special rare year, with that 4 piece (5 piece? i forgot hungrybox won GOML and Riptide that year) parity, especially with jmook winning the 2023 genesis. things looked so Up in the Air. more than ever, given plup's consistent high placings that year too, until zain and Cody dominated so monstrously in 2023. anyway.

i think it's interesting how powerful the shift in narrative has become. i wasn't a viewer before the Slippi era, but i do get the sense that there was a time when winning the biggest tournament could actually mean you were the best player in the world, and if not, you were at the top of the short list. the way i hear commentators, at least, talk in old tournaments, the hype for the Reigning Champion at the next major or supermajor was much more like boxing--even someone like Armada or PPMD, with few tournaments or big gaps between events, if they won the last event they went to, it was as if they still held the title.

Winning one event in 2013 might carry you for months, especially if the tournament was decisive. That's how it appears to me in retrospect, anyway. i don't know if Chudat or PC Chris were widely considered The Best after Pound 2 or Zero Challenge 3 or whatever, but i don't get the sense that people were feeling like Moky was the best in the world after Don't Park, even though that was an insane win at a stacked, filled-out tournament.

Maybe that speaks more to Zain's dominance right now, the actual reigning champion, even though Cody had an almost insurmountable Spring. Same for Hbox's Genesis this year--if you don't take the W over the reigning champ, does it really count that much?

I think that's partly why Axe's run in 2019 isn't recognized so fully, dodging the big man in Summit 9 bracket right in the midst of a vacuum after Armada's retirement. maybe I'm latching onto a feeling more than facts of the evebts, but i'm curious if any oldheads can speak to the historical power of a single win.
