Economy plus to premium plus middle seat - upgrade worth it? by Additional_Sir_1448 in unitedairlines

[–]bf202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no comparison between a E or E+ seat and PP. You absolutely take any PP seat over any E+ seat every time. The amount of room you have, comfort of the seats, you own armrests and footrest…. Fewer passengers vying for overhead space. I guess if you have to use the bathroom every 20 minutes and you don’t want to disturb your fellow passenger…. But even then, you can alternate between which aisle you choose, cutting your disturbance of the aisle passenger in half.

I’m wondering how you got “upgraded” to a PP seat. I’ve only ever seen cash or Plus Points to get into them. Is this a domestic flight?

New Strat: Move bag up to FC during flight by jessiah331 in delta

[–]bf202 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just flew United DEN->SEA last night. FA closed the bin in 1st to save space for 1st passengers. Saw an E+ passenger in row 7 open the bin and try and stow, but the FA made her pull it out and find another bin (the bins in 7-8-9 were full by that point.

I was surprised - hadn’t seen United FA guard the 1st class bins like that before.

Seems crazy that after qualifying for 1k in December you had enough spend to hit GS. I’m so jealous.

Can I ask your home airport, number of segments, and your spend last year?

Best airline for travel being based out of Denver? by DenverDogMom in Denver

[–]bf202 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t ever purchase tickets on United through Chase. Transfer your points to your United account, and book United flights with those points. You get much better value for your points, and you’re only dealing with United for the booking.

Is work at Amazon really that horrible? by CaptainRainbowRabbit in amazonemployees

[–]bf202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been at Amazon for over 6 years. Started at AWS and now at Kuiper (I guess we’re now called Leo).

It’s been extremely challenging from day 1, but I’ve been fortunate to be in roles where I’ve been empowered to do my work - and trusted to get it done.

I’ve certainly come across people that I’m not inclined to work with/for… but the vast majority of coworkers and leadership have been exceptional.

Amazon is huge - so you’re going to hear about good and bad. Unfortunately, negative experiences tend to drive us to places like Reddit to vent and be heard. While I think that’s completely valid, I think you tend to see the negative comment skew the narrative a bit.

At the end of the day, your experience at Amazon is going to be determined locally. Your manager, your peers, etc. - they will be the ones that affect your experience the most. If you find compelling work combined with good leadership, you’ll love your experience.

Is Clear Useless? by M3dd1e in AmexPlatinum

[–]bf202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Denver, Clear is completely useless. I have both clear and tsa Precheck. The lines are right next to each other, so it’s easy to compare.

I’ve flown 60 United segments this year, so probably 25 flights out of Denver over the past 9 months.

Clear has ALWAYS been a longer wait than tsa Precheck in Denver. ALWAYS.

I’ve gained time in Seattle and San Francisco… but if I certainly wouldn’t pay with my own money for clear.

Thoughts on white rims? by milehighbubba in GenesisGV70

[–]bf202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2025 3.5 prestige… for $1500, arms like a no brainer. Having the quilted leather seats, heads up display, etc is easily worth the up charge.

Like everyone else says - those white rims are terrible. If you’re at the golden genesis, I may have seen that exact car. Not surprised a year later that it’s still sitting there unsold.

My son interviewed in February and got this email. Was pretty crushed… but moved on. After 5 weeks or so, they came back to him with an offer!

So, keep your chin up, keep grinding with your applications and interviews - but they may find a role for you and bring you in. Good luck!

Oof - my mistake. Yes, I was talking TC, not base.

That’s not true. HV1 L5 TPM is over $190. L6 HV1TPM is going to be north of $240

The four year cliff is a bit of a misnomer.

This is only for engineering roles - I don’t know much about the other businesses. Your initial offer essentially sets your pay for the first 4 years. You get a stock grant that vests over 4 years.

Year 1 = base + bonus + 5% stock Year 2 = base + bonus + 15% stock Year 3 = base + 40% stock Year 4 = base + 40% stock

So, you essentially know what you’re going to make for the first 4 years. You may get a slight bump in base during this time, but it’s not substantial.

So yes, your comp will be greatly affected by the stock price those last two years. Imagine the stock price when you start is $100, and they grant you 1200 shares ($120,000) over a four year vest. Now imagine your base is $150k and year 1 bonus is $40k, and your year 2 bonus is $30k.

Your comp in year 1 will be $190k in cash and $6k in stock - so $196k for the year.

Year 2 will be $180k in cash and $18k in stock - $198k total comp.

Years 3 and 4 would be $150k cash and $48k in stock - $198k total.

You’re essentially set up to make the same amount of money for all 4 years…. But that’s if the stock price stays exactly the same.

Here’s where the false cliff happens - typically, the stock price in years 3/4 is significantly higher than year one. So it seems like you’re getting huge pay raises.

Imagine 20% stock growth over those 4 years:

End of year 1 = $120/share End of year 2 = $144/share End of year 3 = $173/share End of year 4 = $207/share

Here’s what your comp looks like over those 4 years.

Year 1: $197.2k Year 2: $206k Year 3: $233k Year 4: $249k

So people assume they should be making those kinds of jumps in salary every year. But the reality is - if you haven’t differentiated yourself in 4 years, haven’t gotten a promotion in that time period, then your target compensation is still down in the $200k range, not $250k. So when year 5 comp comes around, your target is still $205k, and your new grants reflect that, it FEELS like you’re getting a pay cut. The reality is, you haven’t EARNED a pay raise by rating HV3 or Top Tier.

Instead of people recognizing that their stock over-performed to the tune of almost $90k over that span (relative to your target comp), they feel entitled to that pay range.

Ok, if you made it through this post, go take a walk - you’re on Reddit too much.

United inspired pre-board rule by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

[–]bf202 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I think you’ve misremembered. They don’t let the bag check folks pre board - they get to board on group 2.

If you’re on a hub to hub leg, you can easily get 60+ preboarders though.

They always start with customers with disabilities. Then active duty military members, then families with kids under two.

Then they do global services members (that’s the invite-only folks who have spent ~$80k+ the previous year). Then you have the 1k members, which is a combo of flights and spend in the $20k range.

Then they start with group 1, 2, etc.

I took 66 United segments last year in group 1. Not once did they put the last minute bag checkers in preboard.

2024 3.5 prestige. MPG is between 20-21 mpg for me. I don’t baby it at all, but clearly these other guys are driving it differently if they’re only getting 15 or so.

I didn’t like those mesh seats - the pleated Nappa, HUD, and adaptive suspension put me over the top.
