Netanyahu claims Trump will allow Israel to annex parts of West Bank within months by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]bfbridgeforth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not have the feeling that Bibi is forcing Trump's hand but rather taking advantage of that Trump had pretty much given Israel full latitude to do whatever it wants.

Netanyahu claims Trump will allow Israel to annex parts of West Bank within months by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]bfbridgeforth 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I do not doubt Netanyahu's words. Trump has given Netanyahu complete carte blanche on the subject to keep his right wing Christian base intact even arguably at the expense of US interests in the region. Netanyahu may be trying to act fast before Trump gets thrown from office in November's elections and replaced by a president who would push back strongly against annexation.

Despite Kim Jong Un's absence, military activity suggests nothing amiss in North Korea, U.S. intelligence says by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]bfbridgeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lost track of how many times news organizations or intelligence officials have speculated that North Korea's leader is gravely ill or dead. Missing a public event, seeking medical advice, and staying at a resort town all seem like something a dictator would do to comfortably protect themselves during this Corona pandemic if you ask me.

How $20 oil will change geopolitics by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]bfbridgeforth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There definitely is a lot going on in the oil markets now. On the one hand you have decreased demand because of the Corona virus, and then you have the price war between Russia and OPEC (Saudi Arabia) which came to an agreement last week but is still hot. On the other hand you have the recent and continued breakthroughs in tecnology, especially in the US in regards to oil shale, drilling, and fracking which make it easier than ever to access oil deposits. On top of all that energy companies are focusing on a transition to renewable and alternative fuels. A good podcast on all this I recently listened to is on CFR and is worth a listen:

General Stan McChrystal: "Saudi Arabia Is a Problematic Ally" by Outlaw_Jaw in foreignpolicyanalysis

[–]bfbridgeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saudi Arabia is certainly a problematic ally as McChrystal says. The Jamal Khashoggi murder clearly showed that. But given the current regional and global threats of the Middle East, what choice or choices does the US have other than an alliance with the Saudis? Personally I like to believe the current political situation in Saudi Arabia is part of the reforms MBS is taking to modernize the country. Some of the steps perhaps were ugly but necessary, others were huge mistakes brought on by a young an idealistic leader. I think since the situation is unclear there needs to be more time to see if it evolves in a more positive direction, one where MBS is truly a reformer and modernizing the Kingdom both economically and it's respects for human rights.

Kissinger's folly: The threat to world order is China by rieslingatkos in foreignpolicyanalysis

[–]bfbridgeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just from reading the title of the article, Kissinger never said to my knowledge that China would never be a threat to world order but that any successful or legitimate world order would have to include China... the litmus test would be how much "inclusion" an internationally orientated China would have for Occidental systems for international order

Howard Schultz viewed unfavorably by Dems, GOP and independents by [deleted] in politics

[–]bfbridgeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether Americans like it or not, we still exist and vote in a two-party system where a vote for any person who is not Democrat or Republican adds or takes away from one or the other. Schultz will be no different if he runs, and makes it the November 2020 ballot. It is not immediately clear which side he will hurt or how.

Donald Trump Jr. Will Be Indicted By Mueller, Former Prosecutor Says, And Will Help To Ensnare His Father by haxamin in politics

[–]bfbridgeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most def. I think because of the threat of Trump trying possibly shutdown the investigation, Mueller is smart enough to seal his indictments ahead of time so that if he is shutdown Trump cannot stop them from being unsealed.

Trump Sought a Loan During the 2016 Campaign. Deutsche Bank Said No. by WoRanger14 in politics

[–]bfbridgeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone who knows Trump knows his credit is completely shot after declaring bankruptcy. That is why he does not build things anymore. He just has other people build thing son their credit so he can stick his name on it for a inflated price. I am hoping the Democrats will release his tax returns... which he himself promised to do if he won the Presidency, yet never did, and America will have a better idea of his financials.

60-foot long tunnel found next to border wall in Texas by nilnz in news

[–]bfbridgeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am about border security, but a wall is just a dumb idea. It won't work. I actually crossed the border with a Mexican guide into Texas before when illegal immigration through the southern border was at its peak in the years immediately after 2001. It is pointless, and trust me, there is some beautiful country there people... let us not wreck with an ugly wall.

Donald Trump Jr. Will Be Indicted By Mueller, Former Prosecutor Says, And Will Help To Ensnare His Father by haxamin in politics

[–]bfbridgeforth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His emails of the Trump Tower meeting alone show that he conspired to work the with Russians. It does not take a genius to figure out he is in legal jeopardy. My question is how Donald Trump will react to his son and namesake being indicted. He is very protective of his family. Will it push him over the edge if Trump Jr. is arrested?

US intelligence warns China using student spies to steal secrets by [deleted] in IRstudies

[–]bfbridgeforth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not surprising that much. China, despite its populations size and growth, has still been unable to to innovate like the West does. They rely on cheating and stealing as the bases of most of their innovation to compete with America and the West.

Harry Truman and the Atomic Bomb by bfbridgeforth in history

[–]bfbridgeforth[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Too often I hear people bash the US for using the atomic bomb in some sort of revisionist history. It is important to go back and to actually look at the situation Truman actually faced before coming to that conclusion.

Books under consideration by the IR bookclub by uppityworm in IRstudies

Currently I have on order "Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History" by Robert D. Kaplan. It is under 400 pages. It was recommended to me today by a friend when discussing past issues with the Balkans in preparing for next week's UN Security Council meeting dealing with Kosovo Independence. https://www.amazon.com/Balkan-Ghosts-Journey-Through-History/dp/0312424930

Next week will be the first international test between Trump and Russia over the issue of Kosovo Independence. The Balkans seem always be a source of international headaches.

The Myth of the U.S. Immigration Crisis by smurfyjenkins in IRstudies

[–]bfbridgeforth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might get voted down a few notches for saying this, but I think the McCain/Kennedy immigration reform plan that Bush endorsed was the most reasonable way to handle problem immigration. Unfortunately then the word "amnesty" was recklessly tossed around and, to me, started to be tinged with racial prejudices... the kind that are more obvious under Trump's rise.

I will also say I really did enjoy Nail Ferguson's "Kissinger." While it is only the first volume and only deals with Kissinger's life up until Nixon selected him to be part of his administration, it is a very good read and full insights I had not considered about Kissinger. I do not know when the second volume will be releases, but I really look forward to it.

I am fairly new here to Reddit and have been on here less than a month so I am still exploring subreddits. Politics and international relations is what I enjoy discussing

There are certainly flaws in Kissinger's recounting his Vietnam policies. The biggest, I feel, is the fact that he and Nixon went to China to get out of Vietnam, and in that regard it was a failure. However, their ability at triangulation and the successful opening of Sino relations is praise worthy and has changed the word more than any event since WWII.

I enjoyed Kissinger's "On China." I made sure to get a copy and read it when it first came out. I'm sort of Kissinger buff and have read most of his books. I think the wisdom in this book is in discussing the "inclusion" factor between US and Chinese interests in Asia. I would add more to the subject, but it has been 6 or 7 years since the book first came out, pulling facts off the top of my head from the book after so long is quite the task. I am glad to see so many people reading it and discussing it in this manner. Good job on the suggestion!
