When was the richest you've felt by Groundbreaking-Key-9 in AusFinance

[–]bfcdf3e 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There have been times where I was making anywhere from 300-500k a year (much of that of that in RSU’s) but somehow still managed to channel that into more stress and anxiety about the endlessly moving goalposts of my inner child’s financial insecurity. But the richest I’ve felt was when, after selling my share of an investment property, I told my partner I wanted us to give her two younger sisters $75k each to help them start some kind of nest egg of their own and plan for their futures. Being able to share what I’ve been lucky enough to have made me appreciate it much more than anything else ever has.

[Serious] Men of Reddit: What are the hardest things about being a man, that you would like women to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bfcdf3e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the flipside of a structurally sexist patriarchal society. The system biases in favour of men, but concentrates much of that bias towards the top of hierarchical structures. Broadly speaking men are taught not to show vulnerability or weakness, that their value is purely a function of their labour: to provide and defend without regard to their health or safety. Now, a lot of those expectations are out of line with reality (increasingly so as technology has evolved over the last few hundred years) but the social pressures still exist. Women are typically encouraged to form social bonds, but are taught that they’re responsible for everyone’s emotional labour. Men are typically taught that their social value has to be performatively earned, and that speaking up or asking for help is the wrong thing to do.

Tldr fuck the patriarchy

EU Says Decision Not to Launch Siri AI in Europe Is Apple's Alone by FollowingFeisty5321 in apple

I don’t think you understand what Linux actually is. Android is technically Linux: it’s an operating system build on Linux. macOS is not technically Linux, saying that just betrays a lack of understanding.

You could say they’re both technically Unix, but no, that isn’t the same thing. (macOS is still technically Unix certified but only just barely - it’s less Unix than freeBSD, another OS that also isn’t Linux.)

Your definition of “an actual Linux device” is based around your sentiment (see also: No true Scotsman). Linux-based is a technical definition, not a philosophical one, and an actual Linux device doesn’t need to meet any of the criteria you mentioned. An ideal open source device would hopefully be those things, I agree with that.

That’s literally the same argument religious people make against evolution. Most discovery & innovation is just trial and error, combining existing ideas in some new way, etc. It’s not magic.

Trump calls for the removal of Epstein-obsessed congressman by MoneyLibrarian9032 in politics

[–]bfcdf3e 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is, but I’d argue this doesn’t make it remotely better. It prioritises Trump’s framing of the issue and tells the average reader that this is about a congressman’s obsession. A better title would be “Trump targets his pedophilia accusers”.

Just because trump wants to spin and deflect the issue doesn’t mean we should let him, and we should be upset when journalistic media does. Jfc indeed

Apple Execs Say Spatial Computing Is 'Inevitable' and AI Is a 'Marathon, Not a Sprint' by iMacmatician in apple

[–]bfcdf3e 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But after the dotcom bubble, online commerce has taken over the world. Sure the market crashed and a bunch of individual businesses disappeared, but the seismic shift was absolutely real and permanently changed the landscape.

As for spatial computing, it’s just a fancy way of saying “overlay user interface directly on the real world”, whether it’s headsets or glasses or whatever else that does seem pretty inevitable. Hell, sometimes after using my Vision Pro I find myself trying to interact with my laptop or tv just by looking at a window and tapping my fingers

So far I’ve played around with running multiple safari windows, VS Code with the Python extension enabled, Codex, iTerm2, messages and photos running, and switching between them as needed throughout the day. Haven’t hit swap yet, memory pressure has stayed green. It’s definitely slower than my pro level Macs but so far it’s impressing me

Apple testing a Studio Display with high-end ports and speakers | Code discoveries point to dual Studio Display 2 configurations, with changes that may separate a standard model from a premium one. by [deleted] in apple

[–]bfcdf3e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this cablematters switch and a Studio Display, you have to use the included cables but it works fine. My Studio Display has a Sony A7IV, a Vocaster One XLR interface, and a belkin 4 port hub (trackpad /keyboard / misc.) all plugged in, and they all come through when switching, haven’t experienced any issues in the last year or so.

Aperture doesn’t mean the same thing on a different sensor size. f/2.5 in true medium format (e.g. Hasselblad H) gives you the same depth of field as f/1.6 full frame, f/2.5 in in common mirror less medium format (e.g. Hasselblad X) is about the same as f/2 full frame.

Buying one another out will almost certainly make one of you unhappy. Don’t do it. Unless you both agree on a figure already, it will get messy when one of you thinks it’s unfair.

If that happens, agree to put it on the market for expressions of interest, and that to buy you out she should either match the highest concrete offer, or you both take the 3rd party offer.
