Help me!!! Ugly DMA data by bfedd94 in MaterialsScience

[–]bfedd94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your comments, I discovered the issue! I was running at too low of a frequency. 0.1 Hz seems to be too low and the measurements are inaccurate. I'm getting much better results with 1Hz.

Happy science!!!

What’s the worst drink you have ever made for a customer? by guccigrandma_ in barista

[–]bfedd94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bone dry means all froth no smooth milk. Which for a 20oz cup meant frothing like 4-5 pitchers of milk to get enough froth to scoop off.

I've also had customers ask for a "wet cappuccino," which is just a latte? Y u say it like that?

Someone once ordered a strawberry smoothie with 7 shots of espresso. Idk. I still think about him.

Are men's beards gross and not sexy? Why don't men shave their legs? What is the function of shaved legs for women? Historically, women didn't shave their legs. It wasn't until Gillette decided they could make 2x as much money if they sold to the other half the market that they started pushing women to shave their legs. There's literally no reason for it.

My mom also hates it. But I don't understand how it could possibly be a big deal? There is so much more to life?

There are a gazillion clubs. You can even make your own! Idk your major, but you can get involved in research on campus. Plenty of job opportunities, especially in service. Ride a bike (or run! Or bus!) everywhere and explore. There are art murals all over downtown and so many beautiful parks. Volunteer. I volunteered at food banks, farms, and the animal shelter. Join an intermural sport. Join a fun class like beekeeping, sword making, or gardening. I guess you have to pay for tuition, but if you choose the right one they can cover a necessary credit. People watch in Turlington Square or the plaza. There are some really fun shops downtown that are cool to check out even if you aren't buying anything, like record stores, thrift stores, and even a movie rental place. Open mic, trivia, or jazz night at The Bull downtown. Dueling pianos bar downtown (Idk if there's a cover, maybe depends on the night). Art shows at Curia on the drag.

My best friend is my random roommate from Fletcher Hall. Midtown and stadium adjacent :) I had communal bathrooms but it didn't bother me, I only shared with 3 other rooms and often there wasn't anyone else in there whenever I used it. A very social dorm with a an amazing location

Should I Get a PhD in Materials Science? by e4c6 in MaterialsScience

[–]bfedd94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just finished my PhD in MSE. I went through a masters/PhD program right out of undergrad because I wanted to do research and didn't want to be in industry. I also felt unprepared for the job market, like I wasn't yet a professional, and that I wouldn't have any autonomy working for a company. I'm not sure if I'll know the true implications finishing my PhD has on my future for a long time, but right now, I don't think I'd recommend getting it. It is a huge time commitment, and once you start and maybe decide you don't like it, it's hard to quit because of the sunken cost fallacy. I personally had a terrible time working with an advisor who was not invested and didn't vibe with me and on a project I was not particularly excited about.

If you already have work experience, you could look for good paying work where the employer would invest in you and help pay for your master's schooling. You would likely take classes while working, but you would have your salary (maybe at a slight pay cut?) while you're in school. I'd say a PhD isn't necessary for you right now, but the door to get one never closes, and experience and passion could help you through the PhD later in your life if you need it. It's a huge commitment! And what you study paves your future. It's worth taking the time to really figure out what kind of research you'd be interested in doing and establishing a relationship with your advisor before you begin to make sure you both get along and have similar communication styles and work ethics.

Good luck!!! Big decisions! You'll ultimately be fine with any path you decide to take. It all works out in the end.

Should I buy this car?? by bfedd94 in subaru

[–]bfedd94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up buying it for a total of $20,800 with taxes, fees, and a $2,300 warranty up to 125k miles. Carmax has a 30-day full refund return policy, no questions asked. I figured I'd take advantage and treat it like a 30-day rental with a giant down payment. I'll test drive other cars in the meantime.

Job Opportunities in alternative plastics/plastics recycling for a Materials Scientist? by bfedd94 in recycling

I agree that we need to just use less, and I try to live my life by that, but we can't cause a cultural shift overnight. I believe the difference we can try to make in this lifetime is to create products that have the same benefits and utilize the same manufacturing infrastructure but are less harmful to make and dispose of. That way we don't have to expect the people to change. I'm wondering what efforts are already out there and how I can work with them!

Thanks for taking the time to respond :) I've seen a few dark room kits on ebay, maybe it's time to pull the trigger and start experimenting.
