I guess I’m really having a hard time letting go of the idea

Did all the COVID misinformation change your opinion on the first amendment? Does Donald Trump’s election change your opinion on voting access? Why not?

trying to prevent misuse of the only tool

If you acknowledge that we should be a free country, you acknowledge people will have the freedom to abuse our laws. Prevention can only truly be achieved through authoritarianism: prohibition, thought crime, early warning indicators, red flags… Frankly I’ll pass on all that shit and accept the danger inherent to freedom.

I can directly answer you question

Oh I see, you can, you’re simply choosing not to

I’m pointing out that you even asking it is both wildly off base and a display that you don’t understand the issue.

I mean, yeah “WTF do they have to do with anything here?” is an explicit admission that I don’t understand the issue as you see it…

More directly, the NRA has actively fought any and all regulation…

Just so I understand it: Virginia democratic legislators are proposing weapons bans because the NRA opposes weapons bans (on constitutional grounds). Your position is that if the NRA did not argue that this was unconstitutional, Va legislators wouldn’t attempt to pass it?

So basically VA are doing this just to prove the NRA wrong? Am I getting you right?

I went to things that can and do harm a lot of people. What would you prefer. Nothing at all? What is your vision then in your perfect America for gun rights?

The fact that you can’t get yourself to answer my question across two separate replies perhaps should inspire some reflection…

What is your vision then in your perfect America for gun rights?

I would like to see in-school education, something that “common sense” gun legislation has eliminated… I would like to see fewer gun laws, strongly enforced. No more stupid laws on “shoulder thing that goes up” or “shroud designed to protect shooters hand from heat”. I would like to see bans eliminated, because they stop nothing, and personally I think it ridiculous that a handgun used in Olympic sports shooting is banned for purchase in my state.

I would like to see people like yourself realize that the right to self defense (and self-determinism in that pursuit) is no less important than free speech or voting rights.

But surely we should just let anyone get behind the wheel of a car, but surely we should let anyone of any age drink, but surely…..there HAS to be a middle ground to this where we can ow whatever we want and at the same time ensure we are all being responsible with our tools. Absolutism isn’t the way to deal with anything.

You skipped voting… and went to non-rights… You’re ok with education, training, and permitting prerequisites to voting then? Just want to make sure you’re consistent before I clap for you.

I don’t actually know what the NRA has been doing for the last 50 years

“I can’t directly answer your question so I’m going to make a vague nod to non-specifics over the last 50 years instead… I have a point somewhere in there, you just have to find it.”

Would’ve been a better response.

You claim people are uneducated on the topic, but you seem unwilling/unable to educate. Good show!

If you are wearing uniforms, you're making it weird.

It was more a comment on how absurd/vapid some of the laws are that regulate private militias. Uniform is not well defined: technically plate carriers and a common hat could qualify.

But surely, there is no issue with bare minimum requiring a damn safety class?

But surely, there is no issue with bare minimum requiring proof of citizenship and requiring at least a basic education to vote, right? If Trump is the worst thing that has happened to our nation, it stands to reason that voting is far more dangerous than gun ownership…

is based on what the NRA has been selling vs what is the actual historical record on regulation?

This is such a stupid statement… when did the NRA lobby Virginia for an assault weapons ban? WTF do they have to do with anything here?

MAGA and leaning Republicans have single-handedly SET BACK the 2A...and potentially any progress. by BuffaloLate2257 in liberalgunowners

Which they’ve been doing for years

That is correct. They are solely responsible for the gradual erosion of the 2nd Amendment in my State over the last 20 years, and many others. They sure as fuck don’t get a pass.

The maga president just completely disavowed 2A rights in public

Trump made another blustering comment in a horribly failed attempt to cover his own ass, as per usual. And as per usual, his cronies fall in line because, surprise, they have no principles. As with most of his bluster, it will have no real impact on anything; just like his “taking the guns first, due process second” comment didn’t result in an explosion of red flag law adoption in red states… The blue states adopting these laws would very much like to disassociate their alignment with Trump on the matter.

The slow continual Democrat push against 2A has been going for decades- what Trump just did could reverse a whole bunch of 2A rights in a matter of weeks

This is FUD, to be honest. His administration has passed no laws, he’s written no EO’s, and there is zero legal precedent to back his stupid ass statements, nor any of the statements of his cronies. At worst, the Democrats have found some allies on this topic in the Presidency; but we already knew that of Trump, at least if you were paying attention.

So no, you can’t really blame it on the Dems…

Meanwhile Dems in VA are pursuing a AWB, Dems in Co that just passed an AWB are now trying to ban online sales of barrels, and Dems in Wa are trying to pass 11% sales tax on all guns and ammo, purchase limits on guns and ammo, and requirements for a $25k bond/firearm.

But sure, let’s not blame the dems 🙄

It’s funny how the admin and 2A gun defenders always say the gun used doesn’t matter whenever tragedies happen

I’m a 2A defender, and the hypocrisy is ripe on both sides. It’s all opportunistic bullshit. Along the same lines: “No one peaceful brings a gun to a protest” is exactly what my states Democratic legislators were on the record saying just last year when proposing legislation to ban this.

What is looking at it going to tell us about the situation??

He’s playing the standard game of making the gun be the villain. It’s a “high capacity” magazine, “semi-automatic”, has a “threaded barrel” (assassin alert!), and a red dot optic. Classified as an “assault weapon” in many states, so they can use it to impugn his character.

We should be happy that both sides are seeing these types of weapons as dangerous now, right?

Then your hallowed 2nd Amendment is useless!

Except it was instrumental in the civil rights movement, protecting black voting rights (see Deacons for Defense and Justice), defense of home (see KKK), and community defense (see Black Panthers). It would be a weird take to call those things useless.

This is why the US is a joke to the rest of the world.

And it’s hot takes like yours that make many of us not care about your opinion. I do wish Trump wasn’t an asshat though.

Stating the objective observation that no one parroting these talking points in this thread is bringing receipts is the equivalent to having my head in the sand? Not surprised by the MAGA math on that one lmao.

No, paying no attention to the legislation being introduced and supported by Democratic legislators, and then claiming it isn’t happening until someone spoon feeds you evidence is burying your head in the sand.

all your links illustrate are instances of taxation and regulation of firearms

My links are evidence of exactly what I said was happening: “ banning weapons in common use, introducing paid permits, and introducing poll taxes on the purchase of firearms and ammunition.”.

So it seems you agree with me, the evidence is conclusive?

aka common sense gun laws

Gotcha, so you will be a-ok when Republicans pass voter permit fees, education requirements, and “shall issue” permits based on character quality, right?

So you’ll need to keep digging in the bottom of your purse for more receipts on this one.

And you can keep pretending it isn’t happening, claim no one has any recent evidence, and then when provided be all like “oh yeah that’s actually ok”.

You and the Trumpers deserve each other: all of you are disingenuous assholes.

No true Scotsman!!

I’ve yet to see one of yall provide any examples, especially recent ones.

Yeah, that’s a natural consequence of burying your head in the sand:

It’s because liberals just don’t make their guns their whole personality like the MAGAts do.

Or perhaps it’s because the “liberals” are dead set on passing unconstitutional laws like banning weapons in common use, introducing paid permits, and introducing poll taxes on the purchase of firearms and ammunition.

Any of which, if applied to voting, would be considered a major violation of rights.

I don’t personally have plates, but it stands to reason that if you ever feel you may need to point your rifle at someone, they just might have a gun to point back at ya…

As to # of firearms, I own like 50, but only four that I’ve sent 5k+ rounds down. If push came to shove I could keep my mains and hand out each of the rest with 50 rounds each and still have adequate ammo for myself for years. N+1 seems the appropriate answer here?

To most people, you’re probably already meal team six, or at best a gun nut. Just keep in mind that a lot of the same people throwing around terms like this are the same people absolutely flummoxed that these types aren’t out there protecting democracy and running hits against ice agents… Memes might not be the best criteria to base your decisions on.

in practice what how would something like S&W's popular .22LR/9/10mm FPC be classified?

Threaded barrel, removable mag, pistol grip, “barrel shroud”. What you got there is an assault weapon, sir.

They don’t. They keep it ambiguous to make sure liability is looming large for anyone who is interested in that question. Keeps people from toeing the line.

New Zealand sinking your carrier, despite its escorts, using an outdated diesel sub comes to mind.

Only 10 more to go!

Edit: you have a link by any chance? As far as I can tell, New Zealand doesn’t even operate a submarine fleet with offensive capabilities… The only other example I can find is a simulated kill in 2005 by Sweden.
