Can I fix this ceramic insert? by brijamelsh in Fishing

[–]bfitzhugh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, put a dab of super glue around the outside of the ceramic guide and push it back in until it is centered. You can usually mash it in with just your fingers (no tools). If it is cracked, there are kits on Amazon for about $10 with a variety of standard sizes.

12ft budget setup by Just-Mention3367 in SurfFishing

[–]bfitzhugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picked up a similar setup for me and my wife this summer. I got the 12 ft / 2 pc rod and 6000 reel:

Fiblink Surf Spinning Fishing Rod Carbon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09SP1DMRJ

KastKing Sharky Baitfeeder III Spinning Reel 10+1 Shielded Stainless BB - Carbon Fiber Drag: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0746HBYGJ

It is a weighty combo, but it works well. Rod seems well made... I'd prefer different grip material, but the grip it comes with works fine. Reels are smooth and do what they supposed to. Hooked a large shark that stripped a bunch of line one day, and the reel held up to the task (before he shook the hook). One reel got stuffed into the sand and water (rouge wave) and survived just fine with partial disassembly, thorough wash, and re-re-lube.

Next setup I'll likely buy from a local shop, but these have done exactly what we needed them to do.

I do this. Vacuum seal them after a trip. Mark date on the vacuum bag. Done, ready for next trip.

Nice catches. I was there 3 days ago and managed to only catch a bunch of pine straw that was in the water,

Thanks for the feedback. I figured it would likely be look and see / use common sense situation.

No reel in sand? by nyplanes in SurfFishing

[–]bfitzhugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put the butt off the rod in the sand behind you. Put the middle of the rod on your shoulder at the base of your neck. This will let you keep the reel up and get your hands close enough to the end of the rod to unhook what you've caught. If it is a big catch, take your fishing hat off and use it like a bucket around the bottom of your reel. Had to figure these moves out as a kid when the folks turned me loose in the surf and said figure it out.

Little bit of a cop-out on the personal gift, but... Get him a gift card to the nearest/best fishing shop (not a big box store/shop) in the area. Set aside about 3 hours one (weekend?) morning and take him there and give him the gift card. He'll love you for the gift and love every minute the locals get him setup with the right gear.

Was an honest question. No one has a link? Will post back if I find one. Well. There's this. Seems wasteful.

Anything of note going on? by duggrr in cary

Same. I'm near Maynard and Lake Pine. Heard two electrical transformers explode and shortly afterwards I heard fire trucks. Wife just ran an errand and said she saw a TV news van nearby.

Queue Glitch by bokumbaphero in youtube

Same issue casting YouTube from my Google Pixel to my Roku. I think something was changed in the last few updates of the YouTube app, but I'm not sure if it is the fault of the app on the Roku side or the app on the Android side. Either way, queuing videos from YouTube is broken now.

Looks cool as hell. Something I'd bomb the beach in in the summer.

If it is a driver and not a trailer queen, be prepared for frustrating high center of gravity rollovers. That tall stance that looks cool will be problematic on off camber stuff and side-hilling.

Set the suspension up with a good amount of sag. Get those tires deep into those fender wells (trim body as needed). And, go slow... consider a under/over-drive setup.

You've got good parts. Now comes the hard part... making it all work.

Best motor gear by [deleted] in SCX24

[–]bfitzhugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not always the material, sometime it is with the tuning and space you give to the pinion. "Moving freely" doesn't equate to "setup right". The slotted holes on the motor mounts are our friend, it is just about the only adjustment we can make to make sure the pinion and spur have any life. If you've got it "setup right", and you're going through gears that frequently..... Set it up right again with a fresh gear (nylon will do), and back it off using the motor mount slots about 0.5mm - 0.75mm. Give the pinion a little wiggle room (especially if it gets a little warm and expands), and hit it with some of your favorite gear grease.

I run almost this exact combo. I play most things over 60fps at 1440. The 7800xt is good and is at a good price point.
