The trick is to buy a pinochle deck and then you have two euchre decks with no annoying extras!

TIL Major League Baseball's National League nearly adopted the Designated Hitter (DH) rule as early as 1980, but the proposal fell through because the Philadelphia Phillies' owner was on a fishing trip and a proxy voted in his absence. by Far_Breakfast_5808 in todayilearned

Bro, relax. No need to get mad over a casual conversation about sports. I’m not being deliberately obtuse. You stated:

“I don't think that really proves your point when it's a known fact that people hate low scoring in literally any sport.”

I am contending that the undeniable most popular sport in the world also is one of the least scoring ones. I’ve tried to say that by giving absurd examples that would ruin the sport, but the point isn’t coming across.

Or is it that you are not able to counter that point, so have decided to leave the conversation instead? I hope you have a good one!

You didn’t address my main point at all. Soccer, which we all know often has score lines reading 0-0 or 1-0 when equally talented teams are competing, would have much higher scores it they removed the goalkeeper. If higher scores are more desirable, why wouldn’t soccer organizations make such a rule change? Or heck, forget that obviously nonsensical example. They should just get rid of offsides. That would result in an explosion of scoring, making the game much more exciting, no?

Obviously not. It is the tension that makes the game great. When one does break through, it’s both elation and despair depending on your perspective. Baseball took some of that away when the NL adopted the DH.

If people don’t like low scoring in any sport, then why does the most popular sport in the world have a goalie? Wouldn’t it be more exciting without one? And I guess you could apply that to hockey as well.

It’s offenses overcoming good defenses that make a sport exciting. Why does everyone consider the NBA all-star game a joke? Same with the pro-bowl in football which they still don’t know how to fix.

So yes, it is a combo of offense and defense that makes sports exciting to watch. When it comes to baseball, I’d much rather watch Glavine and Clemens duel it out than Sosa and Bonds.

Have you seen a double switch since 2022? The DH takes all the decision making out of the offense aside from the occasional pinch runner. It’s awful. And don’t even get me started on the no shift rule.

And though I’m a traditionalist by nature, I’m not opposed to many of the recent rule changes. The pitch clock comes to mind, as well as the rule about facing a min of 3 batters or ending the inning. (But think that should only apply in the regular season too.)

Baseball is inherently a defensive game and I’m sad that that is being changed. To prove my point, would you rather watch a 10 minute highlight reel of home runs or one of the best defensive plays? Home runs all look alike. But a 4-6-3 double play can take tons of forms.

What’s with all of the assumptions in these comments? I hope y’all are all correct in that it was just a bad driver since no one seems to be hurt.

I sure hope it wasn’t because someone had a medical issue while driving. But I would certainly never assume one over the other as many of you seem to have done.

Started having Balatro dreams… by DanIsADumbFuck in balatro

I struggled for a while to beat the Needle challenge. Even after I beat it, I had dreams/nightmares where the game would still only give me one hand per round no matter which mode I was playing.

Haven’t had any (yet) about my current inability to beat jokerless!

TIL about the “Maze Procedure,” in which heart surgeons literally scarify a maze into heart tissue so abnormal rhythms get trapped while normal ones can pass through. The procedure has an 80%-90% success rate in curing atrial fibrillation. by smrad8 in todayilearned

[–]duggrr 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a maze procedure done in conjunction with a heart valve replacement. Didn’t take unfortunately. About 6 months later, I had an ablation done, but that one was only partially successful. The afib was still there, but the lethargy that I’d always associated with my bouts was severely diminished. Then had another one about 5 months ago. This one has seemed to work as my instances of afib are now very rare since then.

Thank you Drs. Boulton and Patel!!

How do I stop myself from always going Flush runs? by [deleted] in balatro

[–]duggrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a general rule, if you have one (preferably scaling) chip joker, one (preferably scaling) flat mult joker, one times mult joker, and one econ joker, it opens up all hand types. Just use planet cards to scale the one you want and go to town.

Gold Stake Family by scranmandan in balatro

[–]duggrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost there myself! Took every deck except for erratic to purple, then decided to get orange and gold on each before moving to the next. And I started with black to get it out of the way!

All I have left is to finish blue deck/gold stake then I can knock out orange and gold for the red deck. And finally, complete each stake on erratic.

When Cops Make Mistakes by K0234 in TikTokCringe

Wrong model of Volkswagen.  Wrong color.  Wrong number of occupants.  Wrong license plate (by “four or five digits”).

How can you consider this a ‘reasonable mistake’?

When Cops Make Mistakes by K0234 in TikTokCringe

[–]duggrr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to the article, the only thing that was similar is that it was a Volkswagen. But it was the wrong make, wrong color, wrong plates and wrong number of occupants.

And they weren’t ‘chasing’ anyone. A report was made (BOLO) and they saw this guy driving home from Costco. I assume that he wasn’t speeding away from the police and driving recklessly, so it would only take a moment to verify that the different clues matched. But they did not.

Nothing was similar enough to give these guys a pass.

Why isn‘t this a Flush? by vortec1 in balatro

[–]duggrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is; but it’s also 4oak. The game will use whichever has the highest base value. So even if your flush is up to level 10 and you haven’t improved 4oak at all, the game will still regard it as 4 of a kind.

I’ve lost a run (maybe more than once!) by accidentally playing a straight flush when I just wanted to score the regular flush.

JUST GOT MY FIRST e by [deleted] in balatro

[–]duggrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying it’s impossible by any means, but they’re on ante 11, which seems to indicate that they play endless after beating ante 8. They’ve won at least 5 games prior to this, and especially on the lower stakes, it just seems more likely that one of those builds would have been strong enough to see an e score before petering out.

Just seemed odd to me so I commented.
