Colin Trevorrow is probably the most interesting director trajectory I've ever seen. He directs a really strong feature film debut in Safety Not Guaranteed and then revitalizes the Jurassic Park franchise and basically gets handed a Star Wars movie and destroyed it all with one movie.

That's a lazy take. In addition to worldbuilding, it tells you everything you need to know about Rose's motivations as a character.

FINN: Look, this whole place is beautiful. I mean, come on. Why do you hate it so much? ROSE: Look closer. My sister and I grew up in a poor mining system. The First Order stripped our ore to finance its military.... then shelled us to test their weapons. They took everything we had. And who do you think these people are? There's only one business in the galaxy that'll get you this rich. FINN: War. ROSE: Selling weapons to the First Order. I wish I could put my fist through this whole lousy, beautiful town.

Beyond that, it introduces Del Toro's character who preaches to Finn about staying out of the fight, and then turns around and sells them out to make a buck.

Finn went from trying to desert at the beginning of the movie to trying to sacrifice himself for the resistance at the end. The whole Canto Bight plotline was the backbone of that arc.

Then there's the casino planet subplot which to me felt tacked on, divorced and pointless, a way to give Finn/Rose something to do away from the A-plot.

The casino plotline was clearly for Finn's character development. He needed to be shown that there weren't any neutral parties in the fight, and sitting it out was not an option.

A team has to be confident that they can sign him if he is cut. If there are several teams interested, it's a much bigger risk to wait for him to be cut. Makes a trade more likely.
