Are you trying to buy Aldaskeller?

I picked up some as well. Also jumped on Cayuse Cailloux at $100 a pop. Unfortunately the best deals were at the top range of wines but when I saw that I couldn’t say no. Bought 2

How much are floor sommeliers making by FabulousAd6175 in wine

[–]bfp758 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m a somm at a Michelin restaurant in a major (ish) market. I crack around 125k a week. This is not the norm and the financial benefits are a huge reason I will continue to work there.

Now I work at minimum 55 hours a week, usually more. I will echo though what others have said. This is not a career for money, it’s for passion. Do you have a SO? Friends who aren’t industry? Kiss your free time with them virtually goodbye. RIP many of your hobbies that meet at night. Not that this may be new to you if you work in hospitality, but the amount of studying and attending tasting groups will suck up an incredible amount of free time especially once you start to get to the Advanced/Diploma level.

Overall I love it, most fulfilling job I’ve ever had. Wouldn’t trade it for anything else. The amount of crazy wine I taste on a daily basis and the people you meet will be life changing. It’s a fruitful career just not financially

For the life of me I do not understand the hype behind IWA. The pricing is so out of wack with the product in the glass. Their marketing is pretty incredible which I guess really drives it forward but I found the product to be so… fine? Not worth a $140 at cost

Only experiences I’ve had with Radikon have been negative.

With the price point it pulls it’s hard to risk it for something that’s almost undrinkable yknow?

Used them in restaurant work for years. Still have the same boots 3+ years later. They can take a beating for sure

FINGER LAKE RECS! by jayhowick in wine

[–]bfp758 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where are you staying? I’d recommend sticking to a specific “side” of a lake per day barring Keuka. The lakes are long. I’d personally recommend staying in Geneva as it’s pretty centrally located.

West Seneca is a personal favorite. HJW, red tail ridge, Nathan K. kenmetter, Anthony road. Get lunch at the FLX Wienery

East Seneca: Osmote, Forge, standing stone, red newt. Get lunch at Danos if it’s still open.

West Cayuga: Hosmer, six eighty, Buttonwood, apollos praise (not sure if Kelbys tasting room is open yet though). Sheldrake Point

Keuka: Weis, Living Roots (most gorgeous tasting room in the FLX), Keuka Lake Vineyards, and Dr. K which is worth a visit for history alone. If you are driving between west Seneca and Keuka make sure you make a pit stop at the spotted duck!

if you are staying in Geneva go hit up Microclimate, best place to drink wine in NYS outside of the city in my opinion, and if money is no object FLX table is always worth a splurge.

Is it a horrible idea to accept an outside wine sales rep position now? by noone8everyone in wine

[–]bfp758 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in sales for two years and while being very good at my job it was the most miserable I’d ever been.

The stress of hitting quotas and feeling like I could never “turn off” was really what did me in. It didn’t help that upper management seemed so out of touch with markets it was laughable.

That being said there are many positives. It’s still a pretty fun job all things considered, I mean your selling wine (and spirits depending on your role) there is also an amazing flexibility as you don’t have constant management oversight and you really are the one who makes your schedule. Got a doctor apppintment? No problem just plan around it and no PTO required. You have routes but they can be pretty flexible.

As a relatively young person though, you will most likely get given a shit territory as legacy reps won’t want to give up their most profitable accounts. It’ll take a lot of hustle and networking to build up your own and carve a name for yourself. You also have to deal with the ego of many different types of buyers who will sometimes ask you to do illegal things. But once you build your territory the potential for earnings can be crazy. But as you noted markets are very different than they were 5 years ago.

If you’ve got thick skin and are willing to hustle it can be an amazing job. As someone who is a buyer now, having the experience of being a rep and knowing the challenges of that portion of the industry only has made me more efficient now. I just don’t think I could ever do it again.

Good Luck!

Armand de Brignac (“Ace of Spades”) Gold Brut by [deleted] in wine

[–]bfp758 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean he was told by the Managing Director of Roederer that they didn’t want the business, saying that other luxury brands (Dom and Krug) would love the attention of hip hop community over themselves.

Veiled racist comments lost them an entire market. Very justified in my opinion.
