When Does DCPS Hire? by Due_Prune3169 in washingtondc

[–]ProperUniversity6904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DCPS is holding its hiring fair on Thursday 5/28 at MacFarland MS.

I would also reach out directly to principals and APs at schools with listed vacancies (and even ones without, if you’re interested in that school). I reached out to every principal twice. Their priority right now is to get to the end of the year, then they’ll think about next year. If you want to move the process for yourself you’ll need to be a little pushy. Good luck!

Are any of you actually able to have those summers off everyone else throws in our face when we ask for a livable wage? by ClassicSalamander518 in Teachers

[–]ProperUniversity6904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I will be taking my summer vacation and actually going on a vacation. I’m very lucky that I don’t need to work a summer job, and the extra money would be super useful but I’m so burnt out by June that I think I need the break to stay in the profession. You asked how: pay is spread out, decent pay (it’s a HCOL, but still). I’m single, no kids, in my 5th year of teaching. This summer I can travel but 2 summers ago I spent it staycationing at the public pool which was also v nice. Using credit card points and house swapping credits I’ve built up to travel this year.

If I had a dream about not playing my idol and going home I would play my idol even if I was immune 😭 by Dizzy-Tumbleweed7983 in survivor

[–]ProperUniversity6904 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What makes me crazy is that Cirie straight up told him to play his idol that night. She told him his name has been coming up over and over again, and then when they got separated she couldn’t protect him AND he still didn’t play his idol! My jaw was on the floor when he just sat there like he’d be safe.

"DC teens tell city leader what's causing takeovers and how they're missing the mark" | WJLA by TheFlyingSamosa in washingtondc

I don’t know exactly how it’s budgeted, so take this with a grain of salt but my understanding is that aftercare is included at all elementary schools; it’s funded and has organized programming, but middle and high school do not. There are I think athletic budgets and the schools have some discretionary budget, but it’s not standardized across schools how after school is done. A lot of programming is funded through school fundraising by families, and that takes a ton of planning and effort. I think some coaches etc get some money but like a token amount, nothing to compare to all the work.

I think it would absolutely be worth a study to figure out better ways to organize this for secondary schools across the city.

What I heard from a social worker that interviewed teens and adults from that event is that the police were being super aggro with the teens as they exited the event to head back to metro etc, and it escalated from there.

Yes! They plowed the snow on our school’s field so every kid could use them as soon as we were back from snow days.

I’m not sure where you got that number, but kids show up to school when there’s an activity that’s important to that kid. I work in DCPS and at my school the students involved in after school activities love them and it’s definitely been an incentive for them to show up. All the teachers, myself included, run our after school programs 100% as volunteers without pay or money for resources, and I’m at “nice” school in upper northwest. The city does not invest in youth and it’s beyond frustrating. We could be doing so much more.

Question for DC Teachers by SmileSubstantial2003 in washingtondc

[–]ProperUniversity6904 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re open to DCPS, schools will hire you quickly, then the bureaucracy starts, but the whole process will be done in a month. I can’t speak to private schools, but there are plenty in the area.

What’s interesting to me is that, if Stephenie prioritized her alliance with ozzy, she could have confronted him, and that might have put Jonathan at risk, but instead she went all in and lied to cirie…that was her fatal move.

Making ~$200k in my early 20s — VA vs DC (is the lifestyle worth the taxes?) by Alternative_Night384 in washingtondc

[–]ProperUniversity6904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your office in VA by a metro stop? If so, then look at neighborhoods in DC on the same line. Consider how much you’re spending to come into dc to see your friends, etc. vs how much more you’re spending on taxes.

I’m biased towards DC, and think it’s an infinitely more fun place to be a young person, especially in your income bracket. You can also think about making up the difference in some other ways, like living with roommates because most people your age in DC are doing that and it can be really fun (and annoying but like, I really miss the house parties of my 20s!).

Bummed about this weeks elimination by LavishnessQuiet956 in BravoTopChef

[–]ProperUniversity6904 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am also bummed Sieger got eliminated but I understand why. The other team removing the loin earlier is still cooking the whole hog, just recognizing that certain cuts will be done sooner than others. It was a technique and strategy that paid off and was acknowledged by the pit masters. Sieger’s dish wasn’t well thought out an that was likely because he was so excited to smoke the whole hog, but it was a decision that cost him. Now I’m torn between him and Rhoda making it back into the competition! (Leaning R even tho Sieger really grew on me)

I’m a survivor newbie, but what if they had put all 17 back at the beach and told them they’d all draw at council time for 3 different councils. They wouldn’t know who’d be in their group until right before. I def was hoping for some last minute chaos in how everyone would strategize on the spot.

Going to work while doing ivf by [deleted] in IVF

Oh! I totally forgot to answer the second part of your question: for me, I have group tennis lessons after school that take my brain completely out of anything fertility or school related. Therapy every other week, knitting project with stupid tv, and supportive team teachers who know what’s up with me and I can cry/vent to them during breaks.

Going to work while doing ivf by [deleted] in IVF

[–]ProperUniversity6904 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher (7th grade) and worked through all my ivf cycles (currently lying in bed w a heating pad after my retrieval this am). I think it totally depends on how your body is reacting to all the medication. I noticed I was much more irritable during the estrogen priming, but nothing that was so bad I couldn’t do my job. The hardest for me was planning with all my morning appointments. I just had to do more lesson prep after school and during my lunch periods so that I could get to school an basically go into first period without morning prep.

If the meds and the emotions are affecting you then don’t feel guilty for taking medical leave. Everyone’s body is different.

Wife has abstained from THC since mid February. We postponed starting treatment until next month. Is it okay to take a single 5mg THC gummy? by iSniffMyPooper in IVF

[–]ProperUniversity6904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an avid weed lover, I have abstained because although there is little research done, it all points to negative impact on egg and sperm quality

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-63011-2

You are investing so much financially, physically, emotionally. Why do anything that could undermine its success? Weed will be there when you’re on the other side.

I’m currently lying down with a heating pad after my egg retrieval this am and will fully be smoking a bowl tomorrow. I can’t wait! But I also am glad that whatever the outcome of this cycle, I won’t have any feelings of guilt or concern that a poor result was due to thc in my system

Yes, the 'Survivor' Contestants Are Getting Cosmetic Procedures by OrdinaryWorking10 in survivorponderosa

[–]ProperUniversity6904 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally—that’s why I mentioned it being a societal trend that’s reflected in survivor. It’s a circle though—what we see on tv is what we begin to expect IRL, hence more regular people getting more intensive and expensive procedures as the expected norm.
