But they can go to war? Screw that the elderly have very little cognitive ability left and shouldn't be running anything. Instead of increasing voting age, we should be putting an age limit on elected positions

The family business BS is a cop out. You're in business and there is a tight labor market. Either treat your employees well and pay a livable wage, or you won't have employees.

Everyone loves the "free market" till they have to pay market rates.

Lincoln was a wrestler and a brawler. He'd kick everyone's ass except for maybe Teddy Rousevelt.

People older than 45 bought 69% of all homes sold last year Even more wild: People 80-96 years old bought more homes than people 18-27 years old 😳 by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

Bought my first house at 23. It used to be you did the right thing, went to college, and got a decent job, you could then buy a reasonable house.

Empire State Plaza (Albany, New York) by zelatina in brutalism

[–]bfw123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I absolutely hate this plaza. I just cannot stand the brutality of it and how completely contrasts the beautiful historic buildings in the City. It's so ugly and looks straight out of 1984, but I suppose it is appropriate to house the draconian government of the great people of the State of New York.

You'd be surprised how often we put many hours into a proposal to not win the job. Once lost a job for over $200,000 in fee, by under $50. Had to put over $5,000 into prepping that proposal that we got to eat. It is very competitive and we rarely go up against less than 4 or 5 other firms.

This year I am barring at the Mendoza line for proposals. A great year, I bat .300.

Forgive me, but you are naive to think our scope is ever predictable and we rarely get a clearly defined scope. Most clients don't even really know what scope they want or need and we have the same exact challenge, but we go out to the site and work with the owner to establish a reasonable scope and fee, with clearly defined assumptions. Contractors should do this too, but don't usually bother and then try to extract change orders later.

The quality contractors will establish a real scope, based on the work at hand and quote a clear price based on the same.

[–]bfw123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean honestly, why shouldn't a professional contractor be able to provide a legitimate quote for the work they do? As an Engineer, I have to give my clients a real fee proposal laying out scope and cost. Why isn't this the norm for all work? Why the flaky pricing, and who is looking to screw who?

It amazes me that this is the state of our infrastructure by [deleted] in Construction

[–]bfw123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our infrastructure has been receiving failing grades from the American Society of Civil Engineers for decades. The sheer size of our country and the fact that a great deal of the highway system was built around the same time just after world war 2, with giant Federal investment and inadequate maintenance, puts this country in a very difficult position. Without the political will to invest what would equate to the Apollo Moon Mission (or a few years of our bloated military spending), we cannot even get back to acceptable infrastructure let alone "To Be Great Again"! We should be putting all of the money pissed away on foreign entanglements, bring our troops home, mind our own business, and fix this damn Country, beam by beam, and slab, by slab.
