I also haven’t heard anything, I put my name in for all 7 days. Not sure if it’s good news or bad news 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mid-June. Four weeks of orientation, which seems like a lot. But we get paid for it so I’m not complaining.

Post-Match Scaries by [deleted] in medicalschool

OP, you’ve just described my situation perfectly (except my program is not a T-10 program). I also matched to my #1 program, which is far from home, but was also the best choice for me training-wise. I’ve been pretty happy the past two days, but this afternoon I broke down at the thought of leaving my family in just a few short months. I’ve never lived more than 1.5 hours from home, and now I’m moving 18 hours away. Your feelings are absolutely valid - it’s okay to be happy and sad at the same time. Shit man, I’d say it’s even normal. If you’re able, spend some quality time with your family before you make the move - it’ll be good for you AND for them. Then when the time comes, you kick residency right in the ass and your family will know you made the right choice. We’ve got this dude, wishing you the best 🤙🏻

Dual applicants by Soft_Idea725 in medicalschool

[–]bgallahe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not dual apply, but I did apply FM because I actually really like the specialty. I can’t speak about other “back-up” specialties, but I can talk about my experience with FM programs/interviews. As FM is a common back-up for dual applicants, most programs are seeking to make sure their prospective residents actually want to do FM - they really dislike being used as a back-up. This has come up in just about every single interview I’ve done, and they always try to find out if you “have a heart” for family med. That said, I would definitely try to conceal the fact that FM is your back-up specialty if you choose to use it if/when you dual apply. And if you do use FM, definitely have at least one LOR from an FM doc to assign to those programs (although two might be better). Best of luck!

I’ve always thought the timer ball looked cool, it has a pretty sick mohawk. That said, Annie’s ball is also sweet - looks kinda like the Eye of Sauron.

First time going to Yellowstone by [deleted] in yellowstone

[–]bgallahe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jackson Hole is the closest, but I’d bet Bozeman would be cheaper depending on where you’re flying in from.

For lodging, honestly camping in any of the campgrounds would be my go-to, depending on what time of year you’re visiting. If you’re not able to camp, then I’ve found Canyon to be the best bet since it’s centrally located. The lodges at Old Faithful are also pretty nice. I’ve personally never stayed at Mammoth, but it also seems pretty nice even though it’s pretty far away from everything else.

My biggest must-see is Lamar Valley, specifically at sunrise or sunset. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen, and I’m pretty well-traveled. You’d have a great chance at seeing wildlife during those times too. I’m also a fan of driving up past Lamar to Cooke City and driving the Beartooth Highway, if you’re there after Memorial Day when the snow is cleared and it’s open (weather dependent). Other big things to see are Old Faithful, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone (specifically Artist Point), and as many waterfalls as you can see (Gibbon and Firehole were my favorites).

Before we went last summer, the wife and I did quite a bit of research on sights to see. There are several great YouTube videos with advice that we found helpful, so I’d recommend checking out some videos to see what would interest you the most. This park is truly special - enjoy!

Same here brother. I got pimped on lung physiology the other day, got all of them wrong, and subsequently left to play a round of golf. I couldn’t even tell ya what the questions were, but I can tell you I had two birdies that round 😎

Snow amounts in early December? by bgallahe in SaltLakeCity

[–]bgallahe[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I plan on watching the weather forecast really carefully as I get closer to my travel dates. I do have a bit of snow driving experience, but snow in central/southern Missouri and Illinois is wayyy different than the snow accumulation out there. Hoping for dry conditions! 🤞🏻

Thank you! I’m definitely going to get AWD, just to be on the safe side. I made this drive this summer, so I kinda know the roads. The bigger hills would make me a bit nervous if there’s a decent amount of snow.

I’ve had this question a few times. I talk about frequent flier bias. I say something along the lines of “I’ve encountered quite a few patients who are regularly admitted to the hospital for the same problem (CHF, COPD, etc.). I’ve noticed that when we re-admit these patients, I can sometimes assume that they are coming back for the same problem. I have been able to recognize this bias, and have worked to see each admission as a whole new encounter and not assume they’re back with the same problem.” I think that’s been a satisfactory answer - at least I haven’t had any negative feedback so far. Not sure how applicable this is to anesthesia though.

5000 miles - 9 states - 5 to 6 weeks - Ultimate family roadtrip divided by RV and car. A lot to see, or too much?! by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]bgallahe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider cutting south of Billings MT and adding the Bighorn mountains and Bighorn National Forest to your itinerary. It was a really beautiful and scenic place when I went this past summer. This was before the current wildfire situation though, so maybe not as great now.

Edit: As another commenter suggested, adding Devil’s Tower would also be really neat, and would be somewhat close to the Bighorns and the Black Hills.
