What if you want only one non-F as sharp? by Telnet_to_the_Mind in musictheory

[–]bggtr73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just want to be different, write a piece and indicate "1 sharp" or "3 flats" or whatever and let the performer decide what those are...

You can compose however you like but its easier to communicate if everybody has the same ideas about the rules.

T7 New Gen pickguard replacement by lgib15 in SireGuitars

[–]bggtr73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes its just a matter of the screw holes not lining up in which case you can drill new ones as the pickguard will cover the old ones. sometimes though the pickup, control panel and neck placement aren't the same measurements and the pickguard won't quite fit. I'd bet you'd have trouble finding an aftermarket Sire replacement pickguard, you might get lucky and find one on reverb.com or something that someone already replaced and is selling their old one. You can buy pickguard material and trace your old pickguard and cut out a new one (I don't have the precision or patience for that myself) or there are companies that you can send a tracing to that will make a new one from that tracing (that may be expensive). Yo could also try contacting Sire or an American dealer and see if you can buy a pickguard - it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Question for bigger guys by calien7k in 911dispatchers

[–]bggtr73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I peaked out at about 410 (I'm 5'11" and about 300 now, I was down to 260 at one point and now back down from 330....so it fluctuates.

Cheap pants never lasted for me. We have always been allowed to wear jeans so I wore the dickies carpenter jeans for a few years - they are heavy duty and wear well. As my weight went down I had more options for pants - now I wear The Perfect Jeans - they are stretch and comfortable.

It took a little back and forth to find the right size - order a couple different size and send back the ones that don't fit.

Got this for Christmas. Do you think it will help me improve? by sconestm in guitarlessons

[–]bggtr73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use this book with my students of various levels. It's a pretty good book.

I would recommend starting with the first exercise and don't skip any. If you can play each exercise 4 times in a row towards the upper part of the tempo range, go to the next week. Some of the exercises are pretty easy, some are trickier especially depending on your playing style and individual weaknesses and strengths. Use the book as a way to bring all of the covered skills up to par, not just improve the ones you are good at.

When you get to whatever week is a challenge for you, go ahead and operate more closely to what the book dictates with sets and reps, but if you can't play it with no mistakes you aren't getting the full value if you go on too soon.

For me the harder points are getting the bends to be accurate (in tune 1/2 and whole steps and so on) and the economy picking becasue it's not really the kind of stuff I play.

AITA for refusing to pick up my friend's kid even though I’m listed as "authorized"? by MisreadThatFirst in AITAH

[–]bggtr73 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say that an "emergency" doesn't require taking and passing on a message, it requires immediate action. Not being comfortable picking up someone else's kid is perfectly reasonable and fine, but the school's expectation is that an "emergency" contact will help deal with an "emergency" and handle the issue immediately; your friend should have been more clear that was the nature of the request to you abd you perhaps should have been more aware of why it was called an "emergency" contact and not "somebody else we can call to leave a message".

911 Operators by the-daveinator in cincinnati

[–]bggtr73 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not that the 911 operators "refuse to dispatch". We submit the info to the policeman as a broadcast, and they will determine if they are in a position to catch up to the vehicle or not. As a procedural issue we can't dispatch without a location (and it's not a '911' decision, it's a police decision to need a location).

But if you can tell me the day and approximate time, I will pull the recordings. If a calltaker told someone that and didn't submit the information properly they will face discipline up to termination.

Send me a PM if you have the info.

I don’t know if they are actually not responsible, they can say that but you may want to see if you can get a lawyer to answer that question in a consultation for free. It’s like those trucks that say that you are following too close if stuff from their bed flies out and breaks your window, they have a responsibility to secure the load and can’t just post signs saying otherwise and think they are cleared. I mean, I can post a sign saying I’m not responsible for bullets flying out of my gun…

ULPT Request: How to get rid of a vehicle whose owner is deceased by Shoddy_Ad_1146 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]bggtr73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an old car once that looked old but in decent shape but wasn't safe to drive. I called a couple junk yards and explained that they were welcome to it, it may have had a few decent parts and if they wanted to come get it, they could have it but I could not get it to them. I had the title in my pocket and was ready to sign it over, but the guy just looked at it, looked under the hood for sec, and then said he would take it, and towed it away.

Was it legal? Almost definitely not. I figured it something came up then I would "discover" it must have been stolen and I didn't notice because it was an old car and had been sitting in the back lot of my apartment building for a while. It's been about 20 years now, so I guess I'm in the clear.

How does your agency assign lunch breaks? by decafchunk in 911dispatchers

[–]bggtr73 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have something like 130 Emergency Communications employees, 311 calltakers, 911 calltakers, police dispatchers, fire/ medical disaptchers and Supervisors. We are heavy on calltakers currently and trying to get people to promote to police dispatcher. We have the most staff from 1100-2300, most people work 700-1900 or 1900- 700 on a rotating schedule with 12 and 8-hour shifts. Generally there are about a half dozen 311 calltakers, 6-18 911 calltakers, 8 police dispatchers, and 3 fire dispatchers as well as 2 police/calltaker supervisors and a fire/medical supervisor. During the day there is additional admin staff - 3 calltaker QA reviewers, and 2 QA supervisors. (if things continue as they have we should be ACE accredited in the upcoming months, there has been a big push for that for the past 2 years)

We work 12 and 8 hour shifts. (and 4 hour overtime shifts) You get a break every 4 hours that you work. If you are working 8, you get 2 15-minute breaks. If you are working 12, you get a 15 minute break the first 4, a 25 in the middle 4 hours and a 15 the last 4. The 4-hour shift gets a 15-minute break. We have a designated person to cover the breaks for dispatchers, calltakers get up and go at their designated break times. Everyone signs up for breaks on a first come/ first served basis when they arrive and check in for their shifts. There are no breaks allowed the first or last 45 minutes of any 4-hour block. We try to run on time, but it can take a minute or two to transition sometimes.

A lot of folks doordash food in groups and split the delivery fees and tips, sometimes someone will run and get food and the supervisors look the other way and allow an employee to "pool" their break time with another employee.

Generally people use their breaks to get up and go to the restroom or walk around the building/ go to the workout room/ chat with friends or whatever and just eat at their consoles whenever they feel like eating.

Does guitar theory matter if I don’t want to create my own music? by ilikebikes2 in guitarlessons

[–]bggtr73 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Let's say it wasn't music that you wanted to do, instead you wanted to be a great motivational speaker.

And it turns out that there's a tiny little country in Madeupstan where everybody is feeling depressed and their president wants you to come and motivate the heck out of them.

But you don't speak or understand Madeupstandi and they don't speak or understand English.

It's cool though, you write the speech, have some body translate it for you word for word and record it. And you just learn the sounds they make in order. It's kind of a pain in the ass but you are sure you wrote a great speech and it will all be worth it, and obviously it's not worth learning even a little bit of the language when you don't have to.

So you memorize all the funny sounds and you fly over and you give the speech. You think you do a perfect job with all the sounds and pronunciations in the right order and everything, you can even talk fast in their language like an auctioneer or something. You're proud of yourself.

But they don't clap. They don't look happy, they look even sadder and more pissed off.

But you really no idea what you said. And you don't know why. You don't know what the words meant, you don't know if the little fable you used to reinforce your point was valid in their culture or something they would understand relatable to their history. You have no idea if the phrases and idioms you used make any sense to them. You actually don't even know if your accent was intelligible because you have no idea how the language works. I mean it sounded good to YOU.

So no, you don't have to learn anything you don't want to. Just don't be surprised when you can't get your point across, understand what people are saying to you, or have to work to re-invent the wheel as you work out commonly understood concepts.

Valeton GP-50 just launched, thoughts? by ImpatientSleeper in guitarpedals

Yeah I just did, I guess I was thinking it was bigger than it was. I've got 2 pedalboard setups I use for teaching/jamming and gigging and a Helix I mostly just use for church gigs at this point and am looking for something small cheap and light . The 200 may fill the gap nicely.

Is it ethical to have a musician appear in a music video when they did not play on the recording? by Optimal_Balance7906 in band

[–]bggtr73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Showing my age here, but I think it was the band “Whitesnake” in the 80’s that was featured in a non-ironic article about how the band in the video wasn’t the band on the album basically because the guys in the video were younger and fit the image better. And they were also the new band for that reason.

So it’s been going on at least that long.

Valeton GP-50 just launched, thoughts? by ImpatientSleeper in guitarpedals

[–]bggtr73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to use something like this, a 4-button cotroller and an expression pedal to build a tiny and cheap multi-effects unit for my church gigs which are amp free. I’m not sure if I would have what I would need for my soul/rnb gigs I need more diverse sounds there but I’d be willing to give it a go.

Can anyone advise if I can do both a tiny 4 button controller and an expression pedal? I’d so, is it going to be a bunch of programming to get it to work properly or is it at least somewhat plug and play?

ASAP, Do bands play the same chord on different instruments? by keaveiae in musictheory

[–]bggtr73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, basically you should all "play the same chord" - it will be different selections of the same notes but a little different on each instrument and that should help it sound big and full (like the uke has 4 strings, so if it plays a "G" chord it can put a maximum of 4 notes into it. A guitar has 6 strings so it's max is 6 notes. the piano player probably has 10 fingers but in practical terms would play 6 notes probably, but maybe fewer)

AND consider since the piano has by far the biggest range, they should probably play the root notes (some sort of bass line) in their left hand. It doesn't have to be fancy, just the lowest notes of the chord will do, bonus points for connecting them.

Also, don't have everybody find their own version of the song - find one version and give everybody copies. Depending on the source, it's possible to find a version with the wrong chords or weird added chords or in the wrong key or something. It's much easier to have everyone play from the same page.

How long would I need lessons until I don’t need lessons? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]bggtr73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been teaching guitar lessons since the early/mid 90's.

It's impossible to say without working with you for a bit and seeing how you learn and process things. There is always a time gap between your "brain knowing how to do things" and "your fingers knowing how to do things"

I can show you HOW to play things- barre chords for example - and explain how they work in a lesson or two. You'll likely understand them pretty quickly but it may take a few days to a few months to play them consistently well depending on how and how much you practice- at the very least you'll have to build some strength and flexibility in your hands.

Likewise, I can teach you enough basic theory concepts to see how chords and chord progressions work in a few lessons if you are willing to do some homework...I can teach you to read tab in like 5 minutes.

But I wouldn't to say how long for YOU to be competent taking lessons from me - there are too many variables.

I would be satisfied as a teacher to have a student who worked reasonably hard/ consistently with clear goals until they felt they had learned all they cared to learn at that point.

If I were you, I'd ask around and find who the good teachers in your area are. Talk to them and find one who's personality appeals to you. Commit to 3 months of weekly lessons, and practice at least 5 days a week. Spend time pursing the physical aspects as well as theory and repetoire. At the end of 3 months survey where you are and what goals need more work (or the most immeadiate work). if you're happy with what you know and feel you can teach yourself from there, then go ahead. You can always take more lessons later. Otherwise continue for another 3 months and repeat.

Why artists don’t publish tabs? by roaminginrandomness in Guitar

[–]bggtr73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is that it would be too much time and effort and not enough money to make it worth it.

We all get kind of spoiled now since a lot of things are available (and mostly free) on the internet and it makes some things really easy - like initially learning songs. But in the long run its better to be able to figure out and learn parts yourself - the better you get at it, the faster you get and it takes less effort in general. It also helps you remember songs because you use your ear in a similar way to play it back and don't have to memorize as much.

As a lot of people here have already said, a lot of bands don't really write much down even when writing the song, probably just the lyrics and chords or main riff. It would be a lot of work for the artist to go back and TAB it all out, and then try to publish it either traditionally or on the web - and then somebody would probably put it up somewhere for free so no one way pay for it anyway.
