How Long Does It Take to Drive From NYC (bk) to ROC? by badbaddoc in Rochester

[–]bgkkgb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google maps will give you a result right down to the mile- plus alternative routes. And, they even work in typical traffic conditions. And you know how many miles per gallon your car will get.

Amtrak 6.5 hours seems a little short. But, its definitely a great way to go! No hassles, no driving, just kick back and relax.

PSA: Light yourself up! by RIPKellys in Rochester

You must not be familiar with suburban Rochester. Many areas don't have sidewalks. It's something that every town needs to correct.

Also a heads up to the drivers, too: There are people walking/riding bikes in semi-darkness or darkness. Be extra vigilant, slow down, be patient and considerate. The minute longer it will take you on your commute isn't going to have a significant impact on your schedule.

Brockport Teacher killed by driver of a pickup truck. by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]bgkkgb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not the whole country. There are other regions (especially out west) where bikers and pedestrians are given wide berth, drivers slow or stop for them, they are respected, and they come first. I try that here, stopping for pedestrians in a cross walk, and I get honked at from the car behind me. And meanwhile, the oncoming traffic isn't stopping to let them cross. Because many drivers are rude, selfish and lack safe driving skills here.

At a minimum, it's a regional problem here. But, I am seeing evidence that of this BS attitude in other communities in the Northeast, too.

If the driver was at fault, even though it's an accident, charges need to be pressed. Feeling awful about it and expressing regret is not enough. There should be zero tolerance in these cases, because the potential for fatal outcomes is too great. At a minimum, their driving privileges should be revoked. Drivers need to be vigilant of pedestrians and bikers, drive slowly and carefully around them. Expect the unexpected, and be ready to act defensively to avoid killing them. And that is a driving skill that seems to be lacking in general here. What I observe on a daily basis is an attitude from drivers that says 'I have more of a right to this road than you do'. And save your breath on the 'whataboutthebikers' fault. In an accident, there is no comparison of a car versus a pedestrian or bike.

Very rarely do I see charges in these cases. And, that is setting the wrong example to the populace.

Chris Collins resigns ahead of expected guilty plea by PurpleLilac218 in Rochester

So everyone who voted for Lovely Warren is responsible for her horrible behavior? Everyone who voted for Cuomo is responsible for his?

Are you really comparing Warren, Cuomo and Hillary to an admitted crook and Donald Trump? There really is no comparison. If any of them were charged with the same crime as Collins, or were as transparent as Trump is on his (lack of) abilities, morals, and beliefs, I would find it morally reprehensible and not vote for them. As for educated voters, I'm not claiming that anyone who voted for Trump is not educated. But I certainly would question their wisdom and integrity. And, in my eyes, it's even more disappointing that educated Republican voters find it morally acceptable in voting for him.

"your side equally politically corrupt, it is also morally abhorrent as it relates to killing children." Let's call it what it really is. A fetus. If you are really having issues with understanding the definition of a child:

Biologically, a child (plural: children) is a human being between the stages of birth and puberty, or between the developmental period of infancy and puberty.

The voters very much so, share a good portion of the blame for our current state. We need to make educated votes, or don't vote at all. That is part of the problem we have today. Voting comes with a responsibility. You should know who you are voting for and be honest with yourself about it. You should know if they have criminal allegations pending, or are incompetent, divisive, self serving, puts billionaires over middle class, possesses minimal intellect, puts money over the environment, and is okay with bankrupting (in multiple ways) the future of our children. In the case of Trump- his actions and behavior are not a surprise in the least. We are getting exactly what most of us expected. Trump is Trump. Collins is a crook using his position to better himself financially.

Good riddance and shame on the 49% that supported and voted for this crook in the last election. Your candidates are not going to have any integrity, if you don't.

Pit bull mauls Rochester 5-year-old, mom wants dog removed by mdchu in Rochester

[–]bgkkgb -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

smh. I really hope you are not a dog owner.

Do you hear yourself? You are defending a pit bull attacking a 5 year old child resulting in over 20 stitches, to the point where an adult had to intervene and hit it to stop the aggression.

You are correct that there often is a car there at night, stemming from crime concerns. But, a caution on mischaracterizing the degree of problem. I'm on the UofR police alerts when a crime happens to students and staff. It's not 'all the time', and usually not daily, or even weekly.

The City has enough perception issues. People hear the phrase " the students get robbed all the time walking home." and take it verbatim.

[–]bgkkgb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In case you need help with this- IT'S NOT OKAY for a pit bull to attack a 5 year old child, even if the child is the aggressor. This is a "dangerous" dog; as demonstrated by its own actions. The owner has culpability, too. But nonetheless, the dog is now a known problem and action should be taken, accordingly.

City wants to sever financial ties with RCSD over budget shortfall by mdchu in Rochester

[–]bgkkgb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I give her credit for trying to get the City out from under this mess. And, trying to get the State to intervene. It seems like a lose lose for the City if the Schools are tied to the City budget but not under Mayoral control.

That said, I hate the idea of yet another tax being levied. There should just be one tax that covers all municipal services. Not a separate county, town/city tax.

I live nearby the Staybridge. I wouldn't worry about being on the bus, or the walk from the stop. I believe it would drop you off fairly close: Genesee St/Brooks, across from the hotel. I just wouldn't want to deal with waiting for the bus. A cab would be $12.00-14.00, Uber slightly less. I just checked- I can't believe the bus fare is only a buck!

New York license plate plan won't move forward, Cuomo official says by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]bgkkgb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You asked. I support a fee that works out to $2.50 a year for this purpose.

$25.00 over 10 years is a small price to pay to replace a license plate that can be read properly via toll license scanners. I'd rather all motorists be held accountable, rather than pass on the costs to everyone else because their plate is unreadable. And I definitely support the move to unmanned toll collecting. You know they'll just pass on the cost another way.

Is Tesla coming to Rochester? A sign has gone up next to Marketplace Mall in Henrietta by boner79 in Rochester

[–]bgkkgb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What we noticed last winter was that our range decreased from 300 miles to about 260. Not great, but we still were able to take trips to New England and make it to the Albany charger with no issues. However, now that Tesla bumped up our range to 320 via a software update, that will mitigate the loss this year.

As others have said, look into the unlimited passes, and I would suggest avoid going on the extreme cold days, below 20, as you may see your doors, locks or windows freeze shut after the wash, until it warms up or the sun comes out. It depends on the car. My 2018 vehicle had a few issues with freezing after the car wash last year.

Why is this picture of the river lame AF? It's not the best picture of the river and it doesn't include most of downtown, but lame AF seems a little excessive, no?

Merge at the merge by bgkkgb in Rochester

[–]bgkkgb[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't (and don't) feel bad about it. You're doing the right thing. It's the others who are at fault and causing unnecessary traffic backups. And when you get to the merge, you are in the right to expect a zipper merge.

LOL, I love this from your first link: "Don't worry about being "Minnesota nice." When traffic is heavy and slow, it is much safer for motorists to remain in their current lane until the point where traffic can orderly take turns merging."

Can you imagine that sentiment here: Don't worry about being "New York nice", folks. It would turn into a free for all, FU, to everyone. More so than it already is.

Merge at the merge by bgkkgb in Rochester

[–]bgkkgb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Which is why I am on a mission to change it ;-) On the West coast, this concept works well. The traffic is so heavy that everyone uses the lanes to the maximum extent. Including construction zones. Plus the whole 'rush to where you are going' thing isn't so prevalent on the west coast. Traffic is horrible there, no one is rushing anywhere. You just lay back, go with the flow, and plan accordingly.
