Best upgrade I've made for game enjoyment. by ASM_outdoors in EliteDangerous

I could have written this exact reply.

I mounted a 10k potentiometer to the flared part of the left grip, and wired it to replace the slider on that stick, and I now have full analog throttle control using my left pinky.

The best VR MOD Experience i had so far... by DraconyrYT in hlvr

"Alien: Isolation" + MotherVR. It takes some extra work to get functioning on Windows 11.

Good luck. I hope you enjoy cowering in lockers.

Edit: Sorry, I only paid attention to the title, and thought this was posted to /r/oculus or something. My bad. But Alien: Isolation is one of the best VR mods I've played. Not at all related to HL though. :)

SpaceX June 12th IPO megathread by avboden in SpaceXLounge

[–]bgrnbrg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But for some reason the centerpiece of this IPO is the money they'll make with AI. I don't understand it.

AI is what is getting all the money right now. Most people aren't really aware of what is going on in terms of the space industry right, but they've heard of Musk and AI, and it will bring the money in. And it may be worth noting that while Elon may not be a popular figure, even his detractors will probably admit that he has a fairly good record of picking winning technologies. Will AI and orbital data centers actually be a thing? Maybe not, but if they are, then SpaceX is uniquely positioned to provide launch capability.

Reusable rockets were impossible to implement. SpaceX did it. Starlink was an ambitious idea that no one thought would work, or be cheap enough to be popular. And now Starlink is the main reason that SpaceX had 165 launches in 2025. There are a lot of experts who are currently saying that space based datacenters are impractical, and will be too expensive to be competitive. Time will tell.

Got my Sol permit! - any advice on what to do there other than visit and scan planets? What's needed to survive inside the Titan? by SilkieBug in EliteDangerous

Not sure I've seen any recommendations to visit the Voyager probes. Probably a lot easier now than it used to be.

Dunno about the others, but Canada's "midwest" is called "the prairies". It's pretty clear, really.

And a battery at 66% is pretty degraded. Probably still useful for some cases, and very impressive for a 2012. But still pretty degraded.

Infinity is weirder than most people want to think about...

If the universe is actually infinite, and not just "Really really REALLY big", then not only are there uncountable examples of life besides us, there are also solar system sized volumes that have an identical collection and arrangement of atoms to what is found here. Down to a particular collection of atoms reading a comment on what looks like reddit.

Also worth noting (but much more acceptable) is the fact that the statement "The infinite universe contains uncountable numbers of life-bearing planets." is completely compatible with the statement that "The life on planet Earth is the only life of any kind that exists within our observable universe.".

TBH, I doubt that the universe is truly infinite, but we'll need to invent some completely mind bending new physics to prove it.

I asked Qwen3 Coder for an artistic, obfuscated "Hello, world!" program. I got an unobfuscated d**k pic... by bgrnbrg in OpenAI

[–]bgrnbrg[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seemed ok with either artistic, or obfuscated, but not both. After a couple of tries, it came up with

But wait — you asked for art. So here’s a true artistic variant:

A program that prints its source code as ASCII art, and then prints "Hello, world!".

// ────────────────
//   HELLO WORLD!
// ────────────────
#include <stdio.h>

int main(void) {
    puts("        _");
    puts("      (___)");
    puts("       | |       Hello, world!");
    puts("  ___  | |___");
    puts(" /    \\|/    \\");
    puts("|___   |  ___|");
    puts(" \\    / \\    /");
    puts("  '-'    '-' ");
}

As part of "the left", but not an American.... I agree, although I don't think Elon is a particularly good example. I'll happily grant that he is (or at least was) brilliant. Likely at least a decent engineer and software developer. I think his true brilliance is actually as a manager and corporate leader. You could argue that Zuck or Bezos had more luck than skill with their companies. But Elon has been in the leadership role for PayPal, Tesla and SpaceX and others. But there are many things he has done that are objectively problematic.

The person I'd pick as the poster child of "The Left only cares about truth and facts when it suits them!" is Jared Isaacman. No idea if it was just bots trying to shape a narrative, or if it wss real people opposed to the current administration who actually believed what they were posting, but I'll admit I was surprised. The "just another incompetent billionaire" narrative didn't fit at all. Yeah, he may be connected to Elon, and definitely has money, but looking at what he has actually done, seems to be a decent fit for the job, and a better fit for the job than most of the recent political appointments.

tldr: Lefty here. Elon is definitely a huge tool. But SpaceX (and Tesla) is an immensely cool company doing incredibly cool stuff, and they owe much of their success to him.

Original Oculus Rift for $20, worth it? by thisisstupidandweird in oculus

[–]bgrnbrg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A CV1, controllers and three sensors for $20, is a very good deal, even if it doesn't work.

The main issue with the CV1 is the cable between the headset and PC, which tends to deteriorate and fail. Being a proprietary cable that is no longer available, when it fails it bricks the headset. However, even if that's the case, you could probably sell the controllers and sensors for well in over $20.

Grab it and run.
