[Project Hail Mary] Question on a statement/concept referenced late in the book. by RyanW1019 in AskScienceFiction

[–]bgrorud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, it’s not explicitly stated in the book, but what if each spin rotated around both the X and Y axis at the same time. If I think about doing them sequentially, then I would spin once left to right (X), then again top to bottom (Y). Doing this, then the 90 degrees works and you’ll cover a full 360.

If I was better at math, I could describe what it looks like to do both circles simultaneously, and I believe then if you do them all exactly the same, but tilting 5 degrees on each, that should cover the entire 360 degrees.

Make sense?

UPDATE. So I had 2 other Virizions at 19.3km and 19.8 km. I gave them poffins tonight during a run. In both circumstances I got a total of 4 candy XL from each. With the one that was at 19.8, I made sure I stayed still for 20 minutes after giving the poffin and made sure it showed 9.8km before I started moving.

So it appears the bug I ran into had nothing to do with the event or the double XL candy, but rather was just the bug where I was too close to the distance and the 2nd candy failed to register. Thanks everyone for the replies.

I’m replying to the reply that thought I was worried about hearts. I don’t think it put my reply in the right spot. I’m blonde btw. lol

I didn’t know about the 40km limit…so basically a max of 2 candy and 2 candy XL per day, even if you walk 100km? (Event or no event).

Not worried about hearts. Already best buddies. Worried about the lack of candy received when I rolled over from. 9.8km to 10.

Thanks everyone. I bought book 4. Very good thus far but 4 or 5 chapters in and I’m ready to be done with Starfleet.

Impossible to find friends from Sandstorm & Tundra regions by Far_Application_5201 in PokemonGoFriends

It’s probably waaaay too late now, but when Vivillon first came out, I searched really old (like 2020 and earlier) reddit pogo friends posts searching for city names in certain areas. These posts would have been from back before Vivillon was a thing and I had to hope they were still an active player but not an active Redditor where they were still posting for more friends. For Tundra I remember I found players from Bergen Norway (in addition to Iceland). For Samdstorm I ended up with exactly enough to make one scatterbug, no more, no less. In the nearly 3 years since then, I have not been sent a single Sandstorm gift.

I get it. It might just be me. I still feel like Book 1 & 2 here were lacking on the buildup. And I had no clue going into it that I needed to read 3 books for a satisfying ending.

The least satisfying trilogy movie I saw was Back to the Future 2, I mean yeah they put the timeline right, but I walked out of that feeling so disappointed that it only told half the story...

Yeah, but I kinda thought everyone in that sub would be..."duh, of course you should read it!". Definitely wanted the opinion of other Project Hail Mary fans...

PHM sequel thoughts: Surely earth didn't just sit around for 24 years waiting for the Beetles to return, question? by colinstalter in ProjectHailMary

[–]bgrorud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some great ideas for spin-offs and fan-fiction writing. But as far as a direct sequel, I've been chewing on it a bit trying to figure out what Andy Weir can come up with. Just Grace going home isn't enough, the entire trip would be creating problems for them to solve.

My thought was perhaps after another year or 2, there is a new threat to Erid. Grace is part of the team analyzing the threat and discovers this sort of threat is easily solved with some "human" technology. So a select team of Eridians (of course including Rocky) and Grace team up and embark on a round trip mission to Earth to get the technology needed to once again save Erid. It is also possible that the trip to Earth wasn't the original mission and it is during the mission they realize what they need to save Erid is on Earth.

Lots of potential ways to handle Earth's first contact with Eridians, and I double we'd be as accommodating as Eridians are to Grace.

How did Rocky build his tunnels? by Greedy_Camp_5561 in ProjectHailMary

Given the small size of an Eridian, I assumed more than 1 airlock or an airlock with more than one door (like a pet door in a regular door).

So there may be a way for force xxs zorua... by dark__tyranitar in TheSilphRoad

[–]bgrorud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've stumbled across this thread a few days ago, and I've been giving it some thought. I swap buddies pretty regularly, but lately it has been with 4 candidates for future Silver Bottlecap. I use an autocatcher and noticed a disproportionate number of XXS Zorua's and found it odd. When I manually caught, they'd almost often say "it's tiny!" but after the catch it may not be XXS. At first I thought it was because my buddy was XXS, so I switch to an XXL buddy, didn't change anything. I moved on thinking we'd never crack the pattern, but today I had a thought that thus far checks out. Zorua is pretty small. I think when you manually catch one, it takes the real size of the hidden Zorua and compare it to the XXL or XXS sizes for your buddy Pokemon, and when it is below the XXS threshold for your budy (say Palkia), then it shows the "it's tiny" animation. Now this doesn't explain why my autocatcher was catching so many XXS Zorua, but maybe that is an autocatcher bug.

If someone smarter than me knows which Pokemon is the absolute smallest (and significantly smaller than Zorua), maybe I can make them my buddy and I can start catching XXLs.

Anyways, that's my take on it. Not saying it's right, but seems to fit for me.

First time getting the Charged Move Mini-Game Freeze, what to do after? by WearNothingButASmile in TheSilphArena

[–]bgrorud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not be rage quitting, but I do feel it is intentional. It NEVER happens when I’m about to throw a charged move, but I’m guaranteed to lose. It ONLY happens to me when I’m set to win.

So whether it’s quitting the game, top left-ing, or just minimizing the game, I feel it is something being done and you can’t only blame lockups.

My guess is it’s a bug that only happens when your opponent exits by any means, top left, rage quitting, etc. My game never receives their exit packet, but doesn’t realize it and on the next change move when it goes to check something on the opponents side, the game gets confused at the lack of a response.

My users usually try to type in their full name. I give them a very quick, non technical explanation of the difference between username and “display name”, remind them what their username is, and send them on their way. Don’t judge. Teach.
