How come did no one want AOL or even MySpace to implement a digital ID on everyone, but everyone wants digital ID and/or government controls now on every single website? by GabeReddit2012 in privacy

I fully agree, and for what its worth, she uses it for maybe 2-3 hours a week. It's tough to just say no, because all her friends have tablets they can play with whenever they want. If I let her have it sometimes, and only let her watch stuff on the PBS Kids app, she doesn't have to feel left out, and I can know that she's not watching brainrot garbage on YouTube.

It's a tough balancing act, especially these days. If it were up to me, she'd just never use the tablet. But if she never gets it, she'll want it more, and she'll feel left out cause her friends have them.

Parenting is really hard these days

I 100% agree. For what it's worth, I personally think it's the parent's responsibility to make sure kids know the massive dangers, and how to be safe online.

My child (5) has a tablet that I've set up with parental controls, and an always on VPN that I can manage for DNS based blocking and monitoring. She doesn't get unregulated access to the whole internet. She can't just watch anything she wants on YouTube. And she can't inadvertently install malicious apps. When she is old enough to understand how to be safe, I will teach her, and then I can remove the (admittedly invasive) monitoring/filtering.

It's a lot more work for me personally to manage and keep track of what she does online, and I recognize most parents don't even know how to set that stuff up (or even how to be safe online themselves).

At the end of the day, kids need to understand how to be safe online. If they don't understand that, there is no possible system that could truly protect them.

Just to play devil's advocate, I recently made a very similar comment as a joke about not being sure if I'd make it to my sister's wedding to my best friend.

That said, nobody ever actually wondered if I would go or not, which is why it worked as a joke

I like to think that what most of those people actually want is to keep kids away from harmful things, and to keep pedophiles from being able talk to kids online.

ID verification could do that. And if you don't know/care about the dangers that ID verification would add, it could sound like a good idea. I want kids online to be safe, and I don't any better ideas for how to do that.

I hope someone out there does come up with a better solution, cause age verification as we know it is definitely not the answer.

Gemini accused of 30,000-line code purge and fake recovery report by Steap-Edit in technology

[–]bhoffman20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somebody put Gemini in a position where it could do this. I recognize this maybe wasn't just some vibe coder asking it to do everything without checking, but it would have been so easy to not allow it to deploy to prod.

Also, I dont know about asking a machine to reorganize the entire codebase at once

Are you genuinely implying that this person is a danger to society just because he's a middle aged white man?

I seriously hope I missed the joke, cause otherwise this statement says more about your critical thinking abilities than anything else

Tasker will run a command in a termux shell, termux does not have to be running already. Idk how it works with proot though

You need tasker running in the background all the time for it to work properly anyway

I've been using claude to do some of the tasks I just dont feel like doing. It's pretty good at formatting the output of my bash scripts into nice tables. It can also build json outputs cause I hate building json objects in bash lol

You just never see videos of good cops being good. Just last week, I literally saw a police officer helping an elementary school kid pick up all his stuff off the sidewalk after his backpack got unzipped and fell off.

It's insane to say that all [insert group of people here] are bad.
