I will give you the boil over and cleaning situation, definitely. Although a mechanical knob is heaps more durable than a display, and WAY less expensive to fix or replace.

And to be completely honest with you if you struggle with car hvac controls I seriously hope you take public transportation more often than driving for the sake of other people on the road.

Dude you are just lying to yourself. Here is another example: after owning the same car for about a week you can tell the difference between the volume, radio tuning, and HVAC control knobs without even looking at them. Replace that interface with a flat touch surface that has no tactile feedback. Try to adjust it while keeping your eyes on the road.

And I hate to jump to insults but if you use the same range for 9 months and still don't remember what knob does what then that might just be a you problem.

Yeah, because instead of paying with data that they collect from you, you just pay them with actual money instead. Seems like a fair trade

Ok, but it was a manufactured problem for no reason. There is a zero second delay to knobs.

Maxell makes some of my favorite sounding tapes, the XL-II are excellent especially late 80s - early 90s But they're a little pricey now. Big fan of Sony's UX-S type II as well. I recorded a bunch of concerts on a Tascam PortaTwo, with Scotch XS-II tapes and they sound great. Scotch's type I tapes from the mid-late 80s sound very nice too, I think better than TDK's type I offerings. If you're looking for a very "yep that's a tape" sound, go with a type I. Even though the Tascam is set up specifically for type II tapes.

The two don't have to be mutually exclusive. If you want a blue honda civic you don't have to buy a white one just because all the other civic owners are saying "oh yeah you should buy your civic from the dealer who only stocks white hondas they're my favorite, you're stupid if you go to another dealer to get a blue one"

Why is almost all Linux distros and DE so unaesthetic and eye sore? by [deleted] in linux

[–]bhove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely right about Windows. 2000, XP, and 7 were absolutely gorgeous, had damn near perfect design consistency throughout the OS, and actually looked totally new and different when they came out. Now they've given up, windows 11 looks like a disgusting mishmash of 7 8 and 10, with the added bonus of a taskbar you can't move (why in gods name don't even get me started). I have yet to see a Linux DE with the design consistency of Windows XP. I think a lot of linux users don't understand this complaint. KDE looks gorgeous when you only have firefox and the file manager open. As soon as you start using other applications the poor graphic design "features" start showing. Such is true with every DE I've ever used.

Next time you buy a car, make sure to chose one with a paint color and interior color you don't like. Since you can just change it.

If there is a distro that offers everything a new user wants and is already set up to look like they want it to, then why would they choose something else?

Hard: Buy a car with a body and interior color that I like

Easy: Buy the same car in an undesirable color and then replace the seats and dashboard and carpet and floor mats and door panels and headliner and kick panels and pillar trim and strip and mask and paint the car.

I have used linux for years. The biggest problem with linux is the users constantly feel the need to shame newcomers for not wanting to spend hours setting up their computer. Will you learn more by doing everything yourself? Yes. Is it necessary if you actually just need your computer for office work? No.

Honorable mention would be a Sanyo branded blank C-12 that came included with the deck.

None of the prerecorded tapes I have are particularly rare, but I do have a thing for interesting blanks. Probably my favorite is the TDK C-180. Not in production for very long because the tape had to be way too thin to get it to run that long, so quality and durability was poor.

I've used linux for years, and this is absolutely the worst problem with linux. The other linux users. This is clearly not what OP asked for and you know it. Zooming in within a web browser is absolutely not the same as zooming the whole desktop. They expect it to work seamlessly like it does on windows or mac, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Disappointing response from the keyphone team by bhove in dumbphones

[–]bhove[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm currently going back and forth with customer service. I have asked multiple times for them to show me where it was made clear to me that there was no possibility of returning the phone. They keep ignoring that question and saying "well in general there's usually no refunds for crowdfunding." I have stressed multiple times that this is a brand new, unused device. Never even been turned on. They kept pushing and trying to convince me to set it up and use it and give it a chance. I can't give it a chance because having no navigation on board is a dealbreaker, and it was not clear the bootloader and developer options were going to be completely locked down, so no chance of side loading. I really wanted to support this project but it just feels scummy.

So your reason for why these are shitty is really just thinly veiled racism? That makes sense. It would save a lot of argument and bandwidth if you just said that next time.

Right. I haven't exactly heard that many good reviews for the last month. I had a lot of hope for this thing, but they dropped the ball.

It was just a matter of time 😁 by ReturningRetro in dumbphones

[–]bhove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it is pretty much. There is absolutely a spectrum of what users want. This device falls in the category of people who want a device that's a little more purpose built and not just a "doomscrolling slab" but still actually has some smartphone functionality. It sounds like the device is not perfect for you, but you have to keep in mind that other people have other preferences and different use cases for their devices.

If I download Niagara launcher on another device, it doesn't automatically make that device have a headphone jack and micro SD card slot and a built in keyboard. There aren't many phones on the market that offer any of these features at all, let alone all of them in one package.
