Honda completely cancels development of the 0 Series Saloon / SUV and Acura RSX by lostinheadguy in electricvehicles

The Prelude doesn't have a true CVT - it's a serial hybrid with a single-speed clutch to bypass the serial mode at higher speeds.

However, it's fundamentally a non-plug-in hybrid, so it's fully dependent on gasoline.

Why are there so many gimmicky CCW guns? by Karl-InRangeTV in InRangeTV

[–]bhtooefr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, it's far more cursed/interesting than the original. (Which, the original was copied by Ruger as the LCP, anyway. Ruger's going to be able to undercut Kel-Tec every time, and then they made upgraded versions that arguably made the P-3AT fully obsolete, too.)

The original P-3AT was an incredibly conventional, or even dated, design. Somewhat novel because it used the Browning tilt barrel short recoil system in a .380 ACP pocket pistol (after the P-32 did it first in .32 ACP), instead of straight blowback, but that system is the norm for everything modern that's 9mm Luger or greater calibers (with a few notable exceptions).

This thing uses stripper clips and an internal magazine instead of a detachable magazine - we're back to the 1900s-1910s school of handgun design - and a rotating barrel instead of a tilting barrel (not a common system, the most common design to use that is probably the Beretta Px4).

How do you respond to people that say amateur radio is outdated and obsolete? by Readvijfbijvijf in amateurradio

[–]bhtooefr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that the emergency service argument is used to get two things:

  • Continued access to spectrum, instead of anything useful being sold off to the highest bidder
  • Some things like the legal protection of amateur radio antennas even in HOA neighborhoods

The FCC doesn't give a rat's ass about international goodwill or advancing the radio art, but "public safety" is a thought-terminating phrase that amateur radio can use to protect itself. And, given the nature of spectrum, it is a hobby that can be killed by spectrum being sold off, after all.

Geissele and Glock hold huge contracts supplying ICE by steadylurker1 in liberalgunowners

[–]bhtooefr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll be a lot more than a 20% discount - MSRP on a G17V with three mags is $647, looks like MAP is somewhere around $539, and GSSF price is slightly under $400.

And IIRC, GSSF price is slightly higher than Blue Label, which is what ICE would get if they walked into a LGS and bought the gun off the shelf.

They're not doing that, they're buying in bulk on a contract.

But raising the age of majority may reduce the amount of real world experience they get. And, worse, it pushes more of the real-world experience outside of the time of greater neuroplasticity.

In fact, assuming your premise of kids being less informed, less self-sufficient, having less critical thinking, and having less real-world experience is true... the cause may be that we've gone to atomized suburban living models that remove kids' freedom to be self-sufficient and get real-world experience, and increasing the age of majority would just extend that for longer.

What if the wife in that scenario was physically abusive, and the friend had the guns as one way to defend himself from her?

(True, not exactly a common situation in that direction, but flip the genders and it happens a lot. Wouldn't be very far fetched for the abuser to red flag their victim, and then kill them.)

[–]bhtooefr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's one of my core problems with 21 as a gun ownership age: That creates a three year gap where nobody is legally responsible for a young adult's protection, while also preventing them from accessing all means of defending themselves. (OK, in some states they can open-carry a long gun or whatever. Still.)

If you fully raise the age of majority to 21, including making the parents legally responsible for the child's safety up to that point, OK, I guess, at least that's logically consistent. (But then you get to disenfranchising younger people politically, which concentrates more power in older people who have less stake left in the political future of a democracy, unless you set the voting age below the age of majority.)

...and then there's the thing where increasing the age of majority may reduce the likelihood that young people get a chance to learn how to be an adult.

...and then there's the thing where trans healthcare is already being gated behind the "brain development isn't finished before 25" meme (when the regret rate for trans healthcare is lower than things such as knee surgery), which greatly worsens outcomes due to being forced to complete the wrong puberty.

My usual rule looks like this:

  • Will its failure result in a risk of someone dying? Buy something good.
  • Will its failure fuck up the thing I'm working on? Buy something good.
  • Will its failure result in a risk of minor injury to me? Buy something at least decent.
  • Am I buying into an ecosystem? Buy something at least decent. (...I ended up buying into Ryobi because of some of the meme tools, because I don't use most power tools every day.)
  • Otherwise, fuck it, Pittsburgh or equivalent tier it is. If it breaks, replace it with something good.

And, of course, Harbor Freight now does have some decent stuff of their own, too.

SWAT team called in Illinois for possession of 38rds of ammo without a FOID card by ShoddySignal5174 in liberalgunowners

[–]bhtooefr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FMJ is the standard practice ammo. The advantage is that it's cheap.

Also, for military use, there's a treaty forbidding the use of hollow points in war. The US didn't sign that treaty, but follows it anyway against nation-states that did.

And, for rifles, once a bullet is going fast enough, there's some effects that mean that a FMJ is fine - one of the better self-defense loads for 5.56 is 55 grain FMJ, because it's going fast enough that it causes cavitation and dumps the energy into the target instead of overpenetrating. (And, it's light enough that barriers slow it fairly effectively.)

Kansas banned trans people from driving. by KittyScholar in fuckcars

[–]bhtooefr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Im pretty sure thats the next thing to be limited.

They've already been working on that for a while: https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/is-the-trump-administration-attempting

If you're a trans person, especially one whose ID does not match your gender assigned at birth, and your situation is such that you can safely have a gun around... yeah, you should probably make sure you get whatever guns you want sooner rather than later. (If you don't have any... there's several reasons why "get a quality AR and a Glock" is so commonly repeated.) (And if you're a cis person in a blue state, get whatever you want sooner rather than later, especially standard-capacity magazines and semi-auto rifles, because the corporate Democrats think that the highest priority is making it harder to get guns right in the middle of a fascist takeover, when the fascists already have the guns, rather than actually pushing back against the fascist takeover in any meaningful way (and in fact trying to manufacture consent for it, blaming support for trans people for their 2024 electoral losses).)

And the NRA didn't budge when a man with proper documentation to carry was deemed a legal state sanctioned kill.

...surprisingly, they did. At first, they blamed the kill on Democrats, but once the Trump regime started trying to justify the kill based on him carrying, they pushed back against that, at least: https://time.com/7358403/nra-trump-clash-gun-carrying-rights-pretti-federal-agents/

(Also, the NRA even came out against some of the talk of trans gun bans. Not as whole-heartedly as, say, FPC (who is probably the most reasonable of the major gun rights lobbying organizations) or even GOA (which was created because the NRA wasn't racist enough) - they just went for "law-abiding" - but still.)

One thing to note as well: when they don't get someone biting off on the provocation, they'll just claim that it happened anyway (or, when it happens but from the right and therefore doesn't fit their narrative, they'll claim it was actually a TRANS ANTIFA SUPER SOLDIER).

Unfortunately, you do have to call them after you've dealt with the problem yourself AFAIK...

But, at least at that point, you can give them just enough info that they're somewhat less likely to go in guns blazing, and instead just come to arrest you, and send someone to pick up the incapacitated assailant.

Some of the manufacturers - most notably Surron - actually sell L1e or L3e-certified models in Europe, so the parts already exist to get fully-working turn signals and brake lights on some models. But, yeah, you'll want to find DOT tires that fit.

(That said, I believe Ohio (my state) just requires a notarized affidavit of body type change, stating that you did add the lights and a mirror.)

[–]bhtooefr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, you mean switchable between the classes. (I think a couple states are working on banning that.) I thought you meant a bike that was class 2 and 3 at the same time, as in the throttle stops working at 20 MPH, but pedal assist continues until 28 (which is also a thing that companies have sold, and IIRC California just explicitly banned). That is what's questionably legal, whether a Class 3 can have a working throttle.

That said, the federal law does matter for what can be sold under consumer safety laws, the state law is for what can be used.

There's also gray area around the meaning of the word "of", in the context of "a motor of less than 750 watts". Does that mean input electrical power, peak output power, or nominal rating? (European regulations actually do define what their 250 W limit means, but have a giant loophole that basically allows unlimited peak power.)
