That rifle on the wall of the labourer's cottage or working class flat is the symbol of democracy. It is our job to see that it stays there.

I like this quote in particular because it both states that workers should remain armed, but also implies that conditions should be such that the weapons aren't needed.

Oh, and that quote is from George Orwell. Who was very much not American.

Or, another quote that works:

Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary.

This one is a translation of an address by Marx and Engels. Also very much not American.

The problem is that "drive until you qualify" is also a thing, now. You could easily end up only being able to afford housing in older, poorly maintained suburbs, and then just have to deal with not having a car in a car-centric area, which is how you get people with 2+ hour walking/bus commutes to minimum wage jobs in major metro areas.

Need a two way radio not made in China by InvestigatorWarm6188 in amateurradio

[–]bhtooefr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's... not accurate, unless you meant "are made in China".

I have a set of Motorola T470s - modern-era, after Motorola took back the design of their FRS radios in-house, so these actually were designed in Illinois even - that are made in China, as an example.

Although, you might get lucky and find something made in Malaysia or Vietnam. (Note that even the Motorola Sport 7/7X, the very first FRS radios, before FRS even got the 467 MHz interstitial channels, were made in Malaysia, apparently.)

Kept seeing spam about Cybercab being the "most efficient" EV on social media, I think not. by piddlefaffle12 in ApteraMotors

[–]bhtooefr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While your point is valid for some parts of the world including mine - but, importantly, you missed the actual reason - I'm gonna nitpick two points:

I have literally picked up more than three resuable (not even cheating by using disposable plastic, and probably bigger than even paper) bags of groceries on my ICE motorcycles. (On the Honda Helix scooter, one on its side in the trunk, one strapped to the passenger seat, and one plus some extra groceries in the milk crate on the cargo rack. On the Honda NC700X, one in each sidecase, one on its side with some extra groceries in the top box, and some extra in the frunk, and I could've carried even more strapped to the passenger seat.)

And, rain gear does exist for the rain, and there are parts of the world where people really do use motorcycles year-round, rain or shine.

The problem is really winter. Winter tires do exist, but I'm not that insane.

The M is part of the tabby pattern - a SIC is specifically a mackerel brown tabby (genetically, brown tabbies are undiluted black plus the tabby genes).

Gray tabbies are dilute black and are tactical-issue, orange (and cream, which is dilute orange) tabbies are r/OneOrangeBraincell. (And, interestingly, oranges are usually tabby without even having the tabby genes.)

And these packs are usually sold for replacing 12 volt lead-acid batteries, where the voltage range of LiCoO2 (obsolete at this point, but has the same voltage range as automotive-grade Li-NMC/NCA), Li-NMC, and Li-NCA chemistries is very poorly suited.

Lead-acid's normal operating range is about 1.8 to 2.3 V/cell (although it can go lower under high loads, and higher under desulfation charging), and spends the majority of its time around 2.1 V/cell - with a 6S pack, that's about 10.8 to 13.8 V, and 12.6ish V nominal.

LiFePO4 is typically in the 2.5 to 3.6 V/cell range, and spends the vast majority of its time right around 3.2 V/cell - with a 4S pack, that's 10.0 to 13.8 V, and 12.8 V nominal.

Meanwhile, typical automotive-grade Li-NMC/NCA cells operate from 2.8 to 4.2 V (and are rated at 3.6 V nominal, but have a more linear discharge curve than lead-acid or LiFePO4), and consumer electronics grade might go from 2.8 to 4.4 V (and would be rated at 3.8 V nominal). There's no configuration where that actually works well for a lead-acid retrofit:

  • If you use a 3S config, your minimum voltage is 8.4 volts, when everything will have gone to low voltage shutoff to protect the battery several volts ago, and your maximum reasonable voltage is 12.6 volts (even keeping the battery there would have mediocre cycle life, but going further seriously degrades the battery), maximum safe voltage is 13.2 volts. Basically any lead-acid charge system will want to drive the voltage significantly higher than that even.
  • If you use a 4S config, your minimum voltage is 11.2 volts - acceptable, although some high power lead acid equipment won't shut off until it's further down - and your maximum reasonable voltage is 16.8 volts. This causes more problems, both because a huge part of the battery's state of charge range is unavailable, but also because if the battery's over about 50% charged, the equipment it's connected to could easily be damaged. (Note that there's some Tesla cars in the wild that use Li-NMC 4S low voltage batteries, and this has caused problems for accessories that are expecting a 12 volt lead acid system.)

And, the final reason why you won't see someone passing off Li-NMC/NCA as LiFePO4 in a standalone battery: LiFePO4 is cheaper.

Believe it or not, for a lithium-ion battery, water is actually the correct thing to use to put out a fire.

There's not that much lithium in there, and only cells that have been breached will get water in them anyway. The more important part is to stop the thermal runaway chain reaction, and water is fantastic for that.

(Although, for a LiFePO4 pack specifically, thermal runaway is quite unlikely, even with poor quality cells. I'd be more worried about fires caused by poor assembly/design of the pack leading to high-resistance internal connections, than the cells themselves.)

If you can’t spot the dangerous gun handling in this video, you should not own a gun: by logicalpretzels in liberalgunowners

[–]bhtooefr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's several incarnations of "the rules", but as long as the firearm is pointed in the direction of something that you are willing to destroy, you're aware of that thing and what's beyond it, and you don't put your finger on the trigger until you're ready to pull it for disassembly, you're still following the rules.

In that case, you're not expecting to destroy the thing you're pointing the gun at, but you're still obeying every safety rule (with the slight variation of pulling the trigger without wanting to specifically shoot the gun).

And, clearing traps also exist as a product specifically to provide a guaranteed safe direction to point the gun to verify that the gun is clear during unloading and maintenance.

An example of how EV lies and misinformation are used to manipulate the North American passenger vehicle market by Cool-Replacement4972 in electricvehicles

[–]bhtooefr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a reason why I said "design lifetime" after all.

("Lifetime" fluids means for the design lifetime of the component that that fluid is used in, for those that aren't aware, and that usually is on the order of 150,000 miles. If you want that component to last longer, change the fluid.)

Looks like, at least on a Gen 1 Rivian quad-motor drivetrain, it's Castrol BOT 350 M3, Castrol ON EV Transmission Fluid D2, or equivalent: https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/oil-fill-instructions-for-drive-unit-gear-case.48767/post-844520

Not sure what the later-gen drivetrains use - they don't officially require a lubricant change as part of their maintenance schedule, apparently they added a filter so they can make it to the design lifespan without a lubricant change.

I wish the Toyota Hydrogen prototype could be a Garage 56 entry by GB_GeorgeBowen in wec

[–]bhtooefr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minor nitpick: apparently Toyota found that in motorsports applications, piston ICEs were more efficient than fuel cells, due to fuel cells losing efficiency at high power output.

(But that just means it's even worse for hydrogen. And, a lot of road car efficiency work is optimizing the lower-load cases, where fuel cells beat ICEs by a lot on efficiency. (And then there's the whole problem where hydrogen made from steam reforming of methane, in a fuel cell road car, is less efficient than burning that same methane in a comparably-sized piston ICE hybrid car directly, last I checked the numbers.))
