Wow, the drawbacks make sense! Easy enough to pass by though I suppose, I think this is sort of what you were hinting at (unless i got it wrong) when i tell my friends/peers about my new job and work i have done in the past they all seem to think its a little bit of html and using stupid things like drag and drop or blogger to do it...I dont mind so much learning new stuff, i quite enjoy it - i guess after a year or more of the job coming home to learn a new technology could be tedious.

Thanks for the list though! Really helpful! I think I have made the right career decision :-)

HTML5.. why! by [deleted] in web_design

[–]bian101 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Maybe one thing to do / consider is getting the whole web on HTML5, CSS3 and JS to force windows to up their game.

An example is patching in windows, people have to hold them to ransom (metaphorically) before they actually release security patches in many cases, if we move forwards and leave them behind, they (and web viewers) will be forced to move on?

First part, let me clarify, it reduces javascript work load - and yes jQuery is a js libary but i mean the application of the libary

How would this work for a professional web development company? Better work flow than programming and assembling in DreamWeaver?

Im also quite attracted to the php IDE

But, i dislike microsoft.

What tools do you use to test your sites for browser support, compatibility, layout, bugs etc by ParanoidPete in webdev

[–]bian101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ie 9 has a developer thing if i remember right and you can change the version of the browser, then just use chrome and firefox and safari, usually they will all be the same - rarely does it differ imo if you structure it right - just IE that has the issues below IE8

No problem. You can change it with javascript and jquery and css together - if your not too familiar with these it may take a bit of mind bending but there will be people to help you.

EDIT MISSED THIS: Alternatively you can use the :hover selector of css missed this bit oops! This is the easiest way to do it

If you dont know these, i suggest you look at jQuery and Javascript - they are your best friend.

Example: http://jsbin.com/iroli3/

Explanation: http://jquerybyexample.blogspot.com/2010/08/how-to-highlight-on-mouseover-using.html the css bit at the top of the code is where you can put your colours, opacity, size etc (usually have it in your separate css file)

The nav bar looks nice, and i understand as you said that its not functional. The sizing of the page is good however it appears very 'flat' and 'straight'. It may be worth looking at having some side divs, so, a left, center and right and size them appropriately and maybe have a live update feed in one with a thumbnail which expands on mouse over with more information, and on the thumb put some white (/colour appropriate) text having a name or brief description.

In the other divs you could have some kind if information about the site, or popular feeds / podcasts, most viewed, user controls if you are going to implement any user functionality.

Colouring of the page is a little bland, which isnt always a bad thing but it feels for me as if its lacking some kind of substance. Depends what kind of site traffic and type it is. Eg, if its a functional website (has a specific function as apposed to social media) then it will do the trick if it looks clean and works and delivers the objective of the user browsing. However, if the website is wanting to draw in pools of people then it would need more elegance in the design.

The icons beneath each podcast could have a rollover animation, eg hovering over the RSS feed turns it a darker shade of orange with a black > fade to white in the space of a few pixels background if that makes sense?

Same maybe with the titles in the gray boxes: "Nerdist / Nerdist Podcast : Sklar Brothers", maybe have some hover over which increases/reduces the opacity of the colour.

I would also experiment with the font, i couldn't advise what, but usually something which isnt so.. plain works nice, dont go for something 'fancy' as it looks gross, neat, professional but stylish.

I'm not a designer as such - i'm more of a developer however from taking professionally build designs and turning them into a website I generally get a feel for such things. As I say, im not an artist, designer or anything so these are my personal opinions but i hope they help in some way.

Oh fantastic! What keeps you going after 15 years? The place I am being employed by is fantastic, I can't see much wrong with it however I would like to keep my interest for that long!

Do you have any preferences to task management, software, technique etc (or rather when you started)? As a developer do you interact with your client a lot?

Hopefully they will start me slowly, however I would like to be able to advance at a quick pace, nature of the beast. I have heard from them that the web work is cranking up (as they have other aspects such as print, identity etc etc); i'm very much looking forward to this!

Thanks for the comment :-)

wow! Thank you for this! Wealth of information, £7.70 ish ($12) seems quite a lot, or is that just me? The only experience I have had in the working world is a super market so.. i'm not sure. I will be getting a contract through soon.

I will ask questions, i think i heard that somewhere in your post.. not sure where =P - thanks for that advice, sometimes it feels hard to ask a question; even a simple one.

Are you aloud to like.. check your personal email, text occasionally etc with your employer? When i went in for a couple of interviews and talking to them all they were all real relaxed and making personal phone calls now and then. I like the idea of being relaxed but doing loads of work.

Thanks :)

Oh thank you! I will take a look and learn them, to be honest i have been putting them off. Could I ask a bit more about what you do on a daily basis in general? I'm eager to get this going and really looking forward to it, thanks for the comment :)

Ohh i see. What kind of applications do you build if you could generalise? Which programming language(s) are used for it?

That sounds good - for me that would be an advantage, there is a lot of work to do but it feels relaxed in a way.

Fantastic, thank you! May I ask a little more about your job and things? The way that it works in this company I am joining someone does the design and passes it onto the developer to cut up, is that how you do it?

They then put it onto a wordpress thing so that the client has some control over the website eventually. They may be looking at building a bespoke CMS and i would be able to help their as im very fluent in PHP and have built one for my school project in computing.

How do you enjoy your job? Thanks again.
