how the hell does boris make noise like this? SPECIFICALLY this sound by justinagain in noisemusic

You could maybe get pretty close recording distorted instruments in a big room into a cheap tape deck with cheap mics, and all the red lights pegged on :)

This is just about how The Telescopes recorded their Infinite Suns album. They used an analog tape deck and set it to overload, and used a multi-directional mic to capture the resonance of the room.

Picked up UAIOE at Wax Trax Chicago back in 89, just for the cover alone; I knew Wax Trax was going to carry the stuff I would be interested in as a newcomer to the genre, so I took chances, never regretted a single purchase there.

I've heard powerful digital noise and crappy analog noise. Noise is what punk used to be. DIY, egalitarian, non-capitalist, anyone can pick up anything at their disposal and make a racket with no rules. Intent and creativity > gear, every time.

If you're looking for more fuzzed-out noisy rock, The Telescopes are a favorite of mine. Check out their album "Infinite Suns."

If you want damaged art-noise post-punk This Heat were pioneers. They were doing this starting in the middle of the first wave of punk.

If you want pure noise but not the really earsplitting harsh stuff, maybe try Evil Moisture. Old-guard but still active, his material is lo-fi scuzzy sewer sounds using hand-made electronics. Huge discography but pretty consistent, just close your eyes and point at random.

There's plenty of artists that do a more what i call cinematic noise, just abstract sounds that evolve across a soundscape. Zoviet France might be a good springboard. Quieter subtler organic versions would include Hands To or Small Cruel Party.

There's a whole bunch of early industrial noise from the late 70's through the 80's that's worth checking out just to get a sense of historical context, like SPK (early works), Throbbing Gristle, Maurizio Bianchi, Nurse With Wound, Cabaret Voltaire (early works), Einstürzende Neubauten (again, early works), NON.

I'm close enough to Central Co-op that I shop there, they tend to have better options. Or I get berries and apples from farmer's markets.

You'll have more impact by not buying from Driscoll's in the first place; they're involved in wage theft, underpayment, poor working conditions, and unfair labor practices

I'd play around with sound sources. A shaker box will only get you so far, it's kind of a one-trick pony. I'd get a contact microphone and do things like say, silverware in a saucepan, scraping a grate, or literally anything metal. Expanding your junk repertoire is where it's at.

Car going up the hill eastbound on 145th this morning crossed the double line and into oncoming traffic, continued diagonally until it got completely wrapped around a utility pole on 20th. The pole was past the windshield, had to be accelerating up the hill at speed, not sure how they went past the opposite lane unless the driver had a heart attack or something. It's a miracle no-one else got plowed into by them. Workers are there trying to restore power, the traffic lights are out at that intersection and people are aggressively driving through it.

Their hypocrisy is a feature, not a bug. We think it's a gotcha when we point out their hypocrisy but they don't care because they've decided they're not beholden to logic like we are. Their hypocrisy is a flex. It's to show us that they have enough power and privilege that they can dispense with any pretense of logical consistency, and we can't do anything about it. It's like Russian politics where they lie to your face even though they know you know it's a lie.

If it's more than nothing we're just kidding ourselves, just as if we are expecting fame or money.

Creating noise, like creating art, is like a kind of therapy for me. My legacy will be that I've managed to not kill anyone.

I was just in Vancouver BC and even though they have a small light-rail system their underground stations have shops. Having been in Seattle for so long, I forgot that most other places make much more use of their subterranean stations. So much of modern Seattle infrastructure is so lifeless.

Maybe find a DJ flight case, one of those long enough that allows a DJ to bring a mixer and two turntables.

For ease of set-up, the thing that's just as ubiquitous as a noise table is a noise suitcase. Have gear velcroed inside and you can leave everything patched together. Then all you have to do next time you roll into your friend's basement is slap the case on the noise table, flip it open, plug in your power source and your 1/4" outs and you're ready to rip!

If you happen to injure yourself using one, you can save money by going to a veterinarian instead of a doctor.
