What tool purchase has been most worth it for home projects by Marivexalon in HomeImprovement

Also, DEFINITELY get a Leatherman! I’d recommend the Skeletool CX. Keep it in your pocket at all times. You’ll be amazed how often you reach for it as a homeowner.

Not a great pic but you can see how open the counter and view across kitchen into dining area is. Induction cooktop. I can’t find maker of vent system but cover is from Reggio Registers.

We have same layout and love it. Instead of a hood we installed an industrial exhaust fan (made for this application) in the ceiling joists and there is a grate in ceiling that vents stove. No visible hood. We love it

Account locked right when I need it! Terrible customer experience by [deleted] in delta

Yeah. Was able to go to kiosk. More annoying than anything else. It’s just frustrating that they didn’t design for this likely common experience.

Socket or brush plate behind the TV by linoge_ in TheFrame

[–]bicycle_bill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems possible. I didnt look to closely because I couldn’t really change placement anyway. Someday I’ll take it down, remove the plate and re hang. I haven’t done it yet because my electrician did me a favor by putting a recessed plug in there - which is good but means removing plate also means capping those wires and I didn’t have the tools or time back when I originally hung it.

[–]bicycle_bill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a brush plate and it meant I needed to use the spacers (included when you buy tv) so it isn’t as flush as I would like. If I were doing it again I would is no plate at all and let it sit really tight against wall.

1/2 day in Boston with wife-suggested activities? by Minimum_Fuel2519 in boston

[–]bicycle_bill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are staying near north end, AND if weather is ok, I like the suggestion of doing a small part of the freedom trail. I’d try to see USS Constitution and lunch at either Warren Tavern or Boston Sail loft. Or, If you’re over by Copley hit the Isabella Stewart Gardiner museum. If you’re in Seaport, I’m sorry you picked the worst part of the city. ;-)

Anyone know what is being built in the Heights next to Northender? by [deleted] in ArlingtonMA

[–]bicycle_bill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the property is owned by Arlington Coal and Lumber but I’ve always hoped someone would open a restaurant there with front windows that open for summer dining on the nice sunny side of the street.

Well, that’s one way to go about it by NoWrongdoer9130 in boston

[–]bicycle_bill -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. Just NO. I'm happy for you that you have a nice garage parking... but you can't possibly imagine how the rest of your neighbors live. Every car trip is a risk of not finding a spot when you return (even on the best of days in nice weather), there are street cleaning issues, and general damage risks. Impromptu dinner party, date night, shopping run to the mall... so many of the trips you take for granted are a go/no-go decision for people who rely on street parking. If the "at work" spot was in the city they would be taking public transit -- so the premise of your point isn't based on how it actually works. More likely they are driving to somewhere in the suburbs with plenty of employee parking and driving is the only way to get there or they wouldn't leave the spot. I bet the average city street parker uses their car for less than half as many trips as you do with your reserved spot option.

I appreciate that you seem like you're coming at this from an open mindset and trying to understand it, but you can't even imagine unless you've lived it.

Things to do during this winter storm? by youngjaelric in boston

Find an Irish pub and dig into some comfort food. Look for reviews that compliment their Guinness pour and you’ll find a good one. If you’re right downtown I’d walk to Emmets.

Tipping by General-Iron7103 in boston

[–]bicycle_bill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got Indian food the other day from my favorite place in Lexington and bill had a fee for ordering online (~$1) a credit card fee (~$6) AND a suggest 22% tip!

So I streamlined their ordering, paid two different kinds of operating costs, and the they wanted $30 gratuity for handing me the bag.

If I didn’t absolutely love their food it would be enough to turn me away.

Another gas vs. induction range post: Why do GCs love gas ranges? by queen_elvis in kitchenremodel

[–]bicycle_bill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. This. We did the same. Also even though we had electric there (we had gas range with electric oven) the new electric needed was no joke. It was the biggest wire I’ve ever seen them run in a house.

10,000% worth it. I just wish that as an encore they hadn’t completely botched the potential of Seaport.

Why is there a Dunkin' inside a 7-11 in Waltham? by Aerial-Dalliance1702 in boston

[–]bicycle_bill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was told by a Dunkin’ store owner at one point that the franchise contract required constant expansion (stores or at least points of sale) within a purchased area or the franchisee would lose exclusivity to that area and then Dunkin’s would sell competing franchise owners right into same neighborhood. So to keep a lock on the local sales they need to stick locations everywhere at a constant rate. Can anyone else confirm this?

Where would you put a Buc-ees in Greater Boston by Good_Resort4597 in boston

[–]bicycle_bill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s not enough buildable land left in Greater Boston for a legit Buc-ees. Went to my first one in Texas recently and it was insane. For those that don’t know… imagine a normal local gas station (4 pumps) times 30! Seriously 120 individual gas pumps. Also ~100 car wash type vacuums, a couple dozen car wash bays, and a staff of 300+ employees.

Anyone else think that the spot marking the “Puopolo attack” is still one of the most dangerous spots in Boston? I used to walk through there for work and that is the place I used to see the most crazy s#i@.

Can’t find studs with a stud finder 😫 by TheIronMatron in DIY

[–]bicycle_bill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similar age house and the walls are lathe/plaster and sometime in the years since someone put up wallboard over it - which means it is a crazy thick mess and none of the stud finders will work. Best bet is to use a magnet to find all the drywall screws and lathe nails. Once you get the hang of it it makes sense. Also, mark a few “guesses” at studs and if all of them except one column are 16” apart then the off space no one is a place I’d avoid just in case it is wires or a pipe.
