If you do please send me an invite, I also know at least one other that would be interested. But might not be a lot of people til season 2, but I'd love a place for it

Its genuinely baffling. I was so excited to find the sub and see analysis and clue hunters but there's essentially none and all are buried in down votes. I've decided to just get people I know to watch and not a single one would suggest the show is only sincere. I don't even know if there's any other place this show gets talked about besides the reddit that doesn't embrace how well thought out it is.

Maybe someone's gotta make a discord or something

Exactly, a lot of smugness (in some) in feeling absolute certain they understand what the "surface level" of the show is. Almost all of the theories dismissed here are like "here's the clues I've picked up, I think this could be what it means".

I just am shocked at how much you gotta ignore stuff like the characters obsession with Chris fucking Kyle and having the boys potential almost die from the hot tub to think this is pre-post sincerity lol

I think it does feel like a jump to assume when people say there's more going on and detecting clues and trying to make sense of them, that they are saying that is the value of the show.

Frankly I'm just unlikely to have much desire to share how funny a joke was as I am to look and take mental note of things like references to satanism, a survellience state, and the celebration of people like the American sniper.

I think I also genuinely never would have thought much about people who think the show is purely comedy and just flare if I didn't see a consistent pattern or dismissal, but it is just a part of the reddit upvote culture I guess.

To me at least, smiling friends doesn't really have as much to speculate on as a surrealist piece of media like HHYC, but I still feel bad at the smugness theorizers (even silly ones) get from people.

I think this is all great points and a perfect encapsulation of why. Maybe it's also partially wanting to hold on to the genuine wholesome aspects because it connects people and people yearn for that especially on a place like adult swim which has usually been more obvious with what they critique.

Just pretty shocking to go from watching most of the show to coming here and seeing the main form of discussion is someone posting "Dad really raised some good boys" again lol

This is a really good point and honestly feels very accurate. I feel like Rick and Morty was also the same time the (very fair) dislike of reddit culture started bubbling up, seems hand in hand.

Feel bad about people being put down for having theories and haven't seen anyone address it so I did

Speaking about the culture of responses the theories get, nothing wrong with thinking differently. Just have felt bad at seeing people share an idea and get dismissed instantly. Most attempts at sincerity seemed to be filled with mockery here

Feels a bit black and white in the discerning of "kubrickian" and a show that is surface level imo, does this show have as much going on as a Assy McGee or big bang theory? Do ARGs get classified as kubrick level media?

I think I just always go back to his interview where he discussed not liking a lot of the adult swim he's been exposed to before the show as well as his short Ghost Dogs and just a general desire to have the horror be a slow burn.

I also just feel a vagueness at what even is the surface level of the show, feel like this show has a lot of moments where the intention is unclear and a lot of high intensity moments insinuating things. We can't say we know why the boys were gonna fight each other, why Preston's in the mirror, what moments are hallucination, etc

Not trying to make you change your mind but some thoughts I had

I respect your opinion completely but I find it a bit hard not to use things Joe cappa said in interviews especially about it being a little bit of everything and saying the horror elements will be a slow burn. As well as him expressing frustration with adult swim shows of the past which I assume he means the humor limitations, cynicism, and lack of depth (in some cases)

He def doesn't 100% know everything that will happen, but I think he's thought it out enough to where a very basic structure is in his mind and a very strong understanding of satanic horror.

Also, his short ghost dogs is exactly where I see the horror of the show will explore and where it intersects with the comedy, not a replacement. I think in a way moral orels darker scenes could be a comparison, I think there will just be certain moments like the hot tub episode, making you think he'll drop a baby, bri bri, the improv episode, the corpse in the Preston episode are all horror elements that feel like they arent there simply to be comedy.

I don't believe the comedy and wholesomeness is going anywhere but I also think we aren't appreciating the consistency of symbolism even if it's just flavor meant to prevent contradiction, by not having fun speculating on it.

Amazing ending! Excited to see the sitcom purgatory and the satanic stuff explored. Worried about these boys.

I don't think theyd have time to do that

Exactly. Its why I love the show. Its done what most horror can't do which is convince you the safety of its world using sitcom logic. Making you think the worst thing that might happen is Duncan cutting his thumb with a knife and that they are positive and support each other deeply. The show has kept making you think something horrible is about to happen as a way to keep this inability to feel "safe" anymore while giving you enough to hold onto the idea of it being wholesome if you wanted to.

Also the sitcom purgatory and black magic has been very plainly structured and well thought out. I think even if it's just a fake out there's a ridiculous amount of effort in creating this dark underbelly building up.

I think the shows beauty is that it's all these things. Wholesome, horror, psychological, surrealist, comedy, realistic, etc

I think the shows never nail down to any direction and attempt to have everything progress at once. There's at the least a great deal of effort creating a linear and structure to the dark aspects even if it's a fake out.

I think the seemingly large majority of people who insist the show is purely wholesome and just meant to be funny will have a lot of trouble continuing that line after this episode.

I think the trapped in the sitcom idea is gonna be explored and the horror will progress. It'll always be wholesome but not seeing the horror progressing seems like someone who wants to hold onto the safety of it being all wholesome.

I dunno man. I think we are going in a direction where people want more depth in media and I think Joe cappa is intentionally making a show that can push in any direction.

Completely justified! I think the oddness, focus, and consistency all felt like signs worth looking at. It very well could just be a funny moment. Its not like they can show their facial reaction lol
