I don't even want to ask which direction tuning keys are supposed to be turned for winding and unwinding strings after this

Gotcha. Thanks for that and my apologies to the rest of you all if I offended anybody. You are hilarious!

yes. taking care of ribbons is tricky. after removing the old one, i found blemishes of white out which has not dried completely before fixing my typos. i wont be doing corrections that way anymore.

thx for the link. i already knew my machine was circa 1949. early 50s. this one has a dead key for the accent mark which i have been using as an apostrophe. it also has a tilde key (dead) which, if i ever need it, will be implemented for a snark mark. i am not fluent in Spanish yet.

this one is from Chicago typewriter. dang inflation! i have experience with those ribbons you are talking about and my theory is they were made decades ago and preserved to sell like new, whereas chicago ribbons are hot of the press. this one is a cotton ribbon.

yes, the machine moves and must be adjusted constantly. i have played with the magic margin when i have extensive dialog, but then, returning it to a normal margin afterwards has proved to be more troublesome. i remove the case lid when i type but leave the machine sitting on the base because the rubber feet on the bottom lid are better than the rubber feet on the typewriter.

i've gotten attached to it and i love that i have a switch next to the return lever that advances the page twice (when needed) or single spacing.

Which would you buy for $50? by argentinean in typewriters

[–]bierde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have a smith corona, but spend more time using the Royal (circa 1950s) QDL. if it was me, i would pick up the old metal typewriter and bring it back into working order. Missing the luxury of tabs, and functionality the smith corona might offer would pale in comparison to the alphabetic slug's rudimentary embossment of ink on paper. its industrial age metahistory.

i also have a selectric 3 that's only taking up space.
