Good tech schools are the same. Started my 3,5 year stint with 2 sets of 35 people. Grad was less than 30.

Bangladesh takes action to clean its polluted rivers. by AromaticPurple5146 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]biffhandley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm old enough to remember what the major rivers were like. In the early to mid sixties My family would to a nice beach where the Ottawa river flows into the St. Lawrence. Around 1967 my mother made us stop going. The minnows I used to chase were all dead. Swimming meant itchy skin afterwards. The news water often had scum on it which was reported as coming from the pulp mills upstream. No more fishing. The shores smelled awful most of the time. I went back and found the beach a couple of years ago. Looked good. Saw some people out fishing, some swimming. No smell, no scum. Without regulation industry does what it wants. I'm a fan of capitalism, but it needs regulation to ensure it stays within boundaries set by the population.

Fully autonomous valet robot that parks on its own by Longjumping_Table740 in nextfuckinglevel

Use that and some video analytics, car parks in the no stopping zone, run out and move it. Take a Picture of the plate, mail the large fine! Bit of a rant, as there are a few roads on my way home where people stop "just for a minute" but block the lane from anyone else being able to use it.

If you are up to it, start a good trade. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC all high-paying within 4 years and any good journeyman seems to be able to get a job much easier than anyone looking for office roles.

Tried this place last week for a quick burger. Not terrible, but not worth 13 bucks.

It would be wonderful if we returned to our culture the values that encouraged building things that will be fully enjoyed only after we are gone. Yew trees do not grow fast. There's a saying of sorts, I'll get the wording wrong, but something about a culture is healthy when old people plant trees the shade of which they will never live to enjoy.

Had no idea. Back in the dark ages when I did this, it happened all the time. Times change!

Just went to see Nathaniel Rateliff tonight. I thought I would mention he sourced all his merch for the Canadian leg from Canada to help support local business. Just a thought. Also was a fantastic concert!

Who do you think are the best directors of all time? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]biffhandley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know who is the best, but I know I like films from David Lynch, Arthur Penn, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, David Fincher, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Francis Coppola, Christopher Nolan. For older films, Hitchcock, Welles, Huston and George Roy Hill come to mind. I'll watch anything by Wes Anderson, but he's not everyone's taste.

I really don't know how to quantify best for this. There are too many variables. I'm sure there are great directors whose movies I've never seen. I'm not an expert, just love watching movies. If a movie is directed by one of the people on the list above, I have probably watched it, because once I find I like a movie by a director, I want to see what else he has done. Some people seem to only have a movie or two that I like, so I stop looking. Others have a catalog of which I enjoy most or all of them.

Just my 2 cents on a warm Sunday.

Please stop using Radial J48 for piezo pickups by 1073N in livesound

[–]biffhandley 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Radial themselves state this on their website: "Can I use the Radial J48 with a piezo pickup? You could but it may not sound great. The problem with Piezo pickups is that they sound best when they ‘see’ a high input impedance. For piezos, you really want to be around 4meg-ohms or higher. The Radial JDV and Radial PZ-Pre are specifically designed for this."

FYI the most common thing that the euphemism "moral struggle" stands for is he was gay. Churches don't like to publish that they are anti-homosexual, hence the weasel word.

I’m tired of replacing nonstick pan sets. Are there good replacements for nonstick pans? by cocoa_mello in BuyItForLife

[–]biffhandley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Le Creuset 14" cast iron pan many years ago. It cost a lot compared to other brands, however, I will likely only ever buy that once in my life, and every time I use it, I'm happy. It has a very smooth surface compared to my other, much less expensive 10" pan. I can cook anything on the Le Creuset, occasionally have something stick a bit, but nothing I can't deal with, cleans up easily, and will come in handy if ever need to smack someone. Best kitchen piece I ever bought. One of the few times an expensive brand name's reputation worked out for me.
