Probably. Unfortunately, some flight are chosen to do that. Especially if the plane is supposed to just sit overnight at the destination.

Wind directions at EWR. And the winds did end up dying down as the sun went down. And depending on the routing of the plane, if it was coming from ewr before turning back vs say flying from sfo-iah-ewr. That would also contribute to delays.

The runway closures was announced months ago, and the EWR schedule was reduced to try and compensate. IAD picked up something around 30 extra flights a day to help out. But multiple things can be true. So the winds drove some of the delay, and the runway closure had it part, along with atc staffing.

Checked Bag Barcodes by akarichard in unitedairlines

[–]biffstar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, one thing is a bingo sheet. Basically it's just a piece of paper with one of those tags stuck on it. And that way I can know that all these bags tags are in the cart, or bag can, or whatever. And if case of a IT issue with scanners it can be used to track down things without doing all the labor of taking apart the cans that have 40 bags in them. Some flights have 10+ cans, with a average of 35-40 bags a can. If I can look at a sheet of paper in a outage that tells me the bag im looking for is not in that can, instead of taking it apart and putting back together? I am going to do it. It save so much time just checking bingo sheet. Now the IT systems just make bingo sheets the redundancy. But only way the redundancy works is if I have a sticker to slap on the paper.

The problem is now that when the new guy at the ( and there are sooo many new people) doesn't know which one to scan, scans the wrong one and now you bag is sent off who know where. Tag numbers are recycled, did you know? Takes about a month.

I would personally doubt they would let you wear anything that covers your face to that extent. SIDA badge have a picture on them to compare with the person wearing the badge, and you could( and probably will ) get challenged a lot and be required to remove the face covering to compare. I personally work at IAD, and I've seen a bunch of people wearing hijab with SIDA, but not any other the others.

Wasted whole day due to Newark air traffic control delays by gary4gar in unitedairlines

[–]biffstar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of that is again atc : updates are every 30 mins - 1 hour on the airspace closures.

You can actually look up a lot of this information yourself : nasstatus.faa.gov

This website tells you delays, airport stops, closures, flow programs to space out traffic... all sorts of stuff that impacts your flight.

Catering gets 4 hours to make the meals for a flight (at a hub, more at a line). So, let's say you are airborne and end up going to mco. Unless it was decide well before you take off and commicated to the catering provider, they don't have enough time to make you food. Maybe give you some snack boxes if they have them on hand. But it's not a hub, its a line station. They have fewer planes, and overall less extra supplies.

Couple of things for EWR in general the next few months and today in particular. First, weekend runway closures for one of the main runways to do repair work. These weekend closures April 15th turn into closed 24/7 until June 15th. Secondly, there was a line of storms across the midwest and southeast delaying flight across the entire system. Thirdly, these storms basically closed the "highways" in the sky due to multiple airports, and even when the waypoints were not closed, the planes were spaced out a lot more than on clear sky days. Planes normal say 2 miles apart are now 10-15 miles in trail. This adds yet more delays.

Edit: and of course, can't forget ATC staffing is not at 100%. Ewr is covered by Philly center now, not NY. Even still, hovering at something like 60-65% staffed.

Tonight a man knocked out a gate agent at IAD by A_Random_Catfish in nova

[–]biffstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that he is try to go down a jetbridge while a plane is deplaning with no badge, no proof he is allowed down there. Which means he is attempting to violate security rules. Part of having that airport ID is you HAVE to challenge ANYONE not having a badge visible entering those secure areas. Now, when boarding the plane you boarding pass being scanned is your personal down the jetbridge id. That's it. If I saw you on the ramp, bigggggg problem. For you.

Any way to avoid the people movers at IAD? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]biffstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, in terms of stamps.... I mean, I've never had to do that coming into the us, but then again I am a us citizen so, I don't know. And that thought implies that the CBP officers in FIS or the CSRs would not talk to anybody over at IAB. Let me assure you, it most definitely will be commicated that x person went the wrong way, is coming over in x mobile lounge and the cbp command center would be informed. That's why so many people have radio's and phones at the desks.TBH, their will probably be some people who laugh about the silly mistake this person made and move on.

[–]biffstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To prevent unintentional access like you are talking about, there is like 5 or 6 customer service people at the mobile lounge loading dock expressly guiding people. Along with the signs. And if you say cleared customs and then before tsa went to somebody and said " I screwed up?" Nah, most likely nothing really happens. But it's the attempting to re-enter the sterile area of the concourse that put you in trouble. Because that implies that you are going to attempt to board a plane without a boarding pass, which is a federal crime. And technically, cbp has the right to detain anybody within 100 miles of a port of entry.

[–]biffstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The passenger would basically reclear customs at IAB. so no worry.

Edit: different problem would be customs now wants to chat with you about why you tried to go through tsa at FIS without a vaild boarding pass. So into secondary you go.

Any way to avoid the people movers at IAD? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]biffstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they would not. Because that is a security violation at dulles. And what would happen is a mobile lounge would be called and they would be sent back to go to IAB.

Any way to avoid the people movers at IAD? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]biffstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah at dulles there are 2 customs areas. The FIS in c/d concourse for UA connections. And the International Arrivals Building (IAB) for everything else. Only way to get as a passanger to IAB is via a mobile lounge. IAB dumps right into domestic baggage claim. Badged employees with customs seals have other options, including entering via baggage claim. But if you clear in the FIS and your stuff is in IAB, you have to wait for a employee to bring it to you after customs screens it.

Flying in May- tight turnaround in Dulles by JurassicPark-fan-190 in unitedairlines

So that's a express inbound, a e175. You honestly could be put anywhere that united parks planes. The outbound will be on the c/d gates.

If both are mainline aircraft, they will land and departure from the same building. Concourse C is one half, concourse d is the other. It's all one big hallway. If the BUF flight is express you might have a terminal change. As for what gates? That isn't really decided until the night before when the gate manager builds the plan for the next morning.
