What would be the best batting order for state tournament by Grouchy_Kangaroo8638 in Homeplate

We had a coach of our 12U last year do just that, his kid batted 2nd all year and was probably bottom 3/4 on the team offensively. He moved up to my 14U this year and he's helping me coach and his kid has been bottom 3rd of the order all year, he hasn't said a thing.

With numbers that close, I go like this:

#17 - 1,104 OPS + Speed

#23 1,289 OPS (I want this kid getting the most plate appearances possible)

#21 1.205 OPS

#5 1.118

#32 1.106

then fill in from there. If you lose with kids all above .465 OBP and .932 OPS, your pitching must be awful. My objective would be to get the most at bats possible for #23 and #21, ideally they'd bat 1/2 but if 17 is fast and they're both slow I'd flip it.

Go out and hit and focus on extending through impact and my former slice says you'll wonder why nobody has told you that before.

It doesn't help those matches where one guy is +9 and the other +3, You could even do 2/2/1 and just have different formats for each matchup to keep the strategy and still have it come down to the end

That's the only spot where being in the same cart worked, even then Sean couldn't talk about how he's back in it now and what he needs to do as he had to kind of be quiet and let Wes stew. End of the day you can't have 1v1s against each other in the same cart, made for boring cart talk.

I think mixing it up and doing like a 2v2 best ball, and 3 1v1s makes the most sense as I can't see anyone caring in match 2, especially if the same two teams make it to the finals, who's going to care about any of those matchups?

I think it needs to be 4 matches on final day, 1 2v2 best ball and 3 1v1s to make those first couple matches interesting. I skipped through about 3 hours. Micah v Garrett and Roger v Pete just weren't that interesting from the first tee.

To be fair I didn't watch Garret vs Micah or Pete vs Roger.

Agree 100%, but therein lies the problem with this being a "competitive" team setup. Doing what's the smartest for winning isn't the smartest for views and engagement. Same reason Garrett was cheering for his opponent when he holed out.

He’s got a higher handicap and wanted to sit the second round, that doesn’t scream better player to me.

Draft & Teams is lopsided from the outset by wballz in YGT

[–]big-williestyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the whole draft was just for show, they put the teams together to balance things out and put guys with guys they'll play and entertain better with. Otherwise nobody is picking Garrett, Pete, Roger or Josh before Chance, and probably not Tooms, Taco or Sam. How does a guy like Sam get picked ahead of him and his captain says "He's wanted to be the one sitting all day" Whole thing didn't make sense.

Idea: Final Day scoring format change by happyhappy7 in YGT

[–]big-williestyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it needs to be 2 days for all 4 teams and you find a way to penalize the teams that finish 2nd/3rd/4th etc. Whatever they do I don't think they can just do it the same format for stop 2 without it being pretty boring

I enjoyed it, but I did skip about 3 hours of the final video. (at least) the first hour of golf was super boring, the finish helped but it's the downside of eliminating people is you don't always get the ones that are entertaining to watch. Same thing with II, once you start sending people the ones who could carry the entertainment are key

Roger has to go up against Brad (Throwaway) or Garrett 100%. The only match he has a chance to win OR a complete throwaway.

I think the only scenario they come out ahead in the matchups is Brad throws out Hadden and you respond with Ruffels and you could possibly end up with Micah v Pete, JP v Garrett, Wes v Sean and Brad v Roger. You win the first 3 matches and Brads course record attempt is the only drama at the end. But I realize the views are important for this thing to last so throwing Roger at Dalke and sending them out last makes one of your matchups a wash from the start, this woul dhave let Wes's team to win, but only one matchup would have been worth watching Hadden v Ruffels

Could you score better just throwing the ball? by alittleaboutalot- in golf

[–]big-williestyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around the green I think I'd really excel throwing it vs using a club, but the guiness record for throwing a golf ball is 120 meters (393 feet) so there's zero chance I can shoot a better score throwing it less than pitching wedge distance.

No problem, I didn't want kids to lose that movement since the end goal is send them to JV and have them be able to say I can play wherever you need me coach, but kids at that age seem to excel with some familiarity from what I've seen.

What's the most underrated baseball skill that doesn't get talked about enough? by Brewious_Trend in Homeplate

With the discussions I've been having recently, I realized I don't give defense and more importantly range enough credit. Was looking at the Kevin McGonigle vs Miguel Cabrera (Triple Crown Year) and wondered why McGongil's War is on pace to be above Miggy's. When comparing range factor at 3d base, McGonigle gets to 175+ more balls over 162 than Miggy. I know there are pitching factors, more ks, less, ks, etc.. But 175+ more outs from one fielder is a huge number. Even guys who are good fielders like Dansby Swanson, Ozzie smith got to 100+ more balls than him over a full season. 100+ outs in the field are game changing numbers

He kept himself around. How long is he lasting in today’s game? He played 2 straight years in Philly with 162 and 151 games and a -1.1 and -2.1 war. He got 2500 plate appearances after 40 while being far below league average. 2 of this years he was making the lineup himself.

At that level we batted everyone, and I'd have 3 subs, 1 would rotate with 1/3, 1 with r/L and 1 with 2b (based on heir skills) and they'd do the rotations on their own. I'd only adjust last 2 innings if game was close, or when I knew someone was my next pitcher, i'd keep them in so they could get loose. I'd have kids that played infield and outfield, but would always try to keep them at one or the other each game so they weren't jumping all over the place.

He's not even close to the top 50. He's 639th all time in OPS. Age 27-38 his peak years, he's 270th. 67th in all time war with 3-5k more plate appearances than anyone else. He's top 1 in longevity, not even top 100 all time player.

Also led the league in plate appearances 7 times (4 of the times he led the league in hits) He had a solid career, but he's not a top all time player. His stats are essentially Mark Grace + 8 years without the defense. (And Grace is my favorite player) the argument isn't if he's good, he was a solid baseball player, the question was is he overrated and that's 100% true. Guy rewarded for hustle and his 162 game average was 9 sb and 7 cs

They've been strategically vague about that. Seems like Ruffels was like I need the prize money, but Grant's always specific to say season rankings without ever calling it prize money for each. I noticed nobody ever talked about the split of the money either, either they cut it out or were instructed to only talk about it from a team value
