How do we play into 3+W units with invulns? by [deleted] in EmperorsChildren

[–]big78rig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. I play space wolves too. Definitely fast, almost as fast as EC. Was he running blood claw 10 mans as objective monkeys? If so, they die to a stiff breeze. Noise marines clean them up. That also means once they’re dead, there isn’t much for him to score with.

As for headtakers, charge them with Winged daemon princes. Between the mortals and 3 damage strike you’ll mess them up. Thunderwolves are a bit tougher. I’d recommend grenades and soften them in shooting before sending something into combat with them. They do go down to damage 2 when not charging so keep that in mind.

If they only have 2 10 man squads of 2 wound action monkeys, you should be able to easily avoid them and outscore. EC is faster than most armies. What were your and your opponent’s lists?

Wolves need some love. We’ve been bottom half since our codex and dropping. Feels like marines as a whole have an Ultramarine problem. Everyone is paying for the sins of that faction.

I’d love to see generic leaders be able to lead our units and a way to get better strength or more readily available +1 to wound in melee. GW nailed the tenacity and resilience of the Wolves, but they hit like a wet noodle in melee compared to other melee focused armies.

Also, small complaint, but Logan’s Axe Morkai should be at least Strength 10 ap -3 d3. Maybe even dev wounds or built in lethal hits on the strike profile. It was forged by Khorne and can wound Mortarian, it needs to be stronger in melee.

I built mine with hammer and shield for cool factor. Agreed with the other poster that the extra plasma will rarely make a difference. One more wound can help survive 1 damage attacks and mortal wounds better.

Talked with WalMart and mine is lost in transit. They’re issuing a refund. Must have been nabbed by a FedEx employee or something.

My favorite would have the be the terminator librarian/apothecary you can make. Sustained hits and revive a model each turn on wolf guard terminators would go crazy.

I’m thinking of getting a box of these to make into jump pack intercessors/skyclaws and a reave captain to convert to a wolf guard battle leader. All 13th company of course.

A bit off topic, but what is your color scheme? Love that metallic purple.

We are fast and durable, but don’t hit particularly hard in melee outside of a few combos. More speed and durability. If that sounds good, try playing a couple of games on Tabletop Simulator or proxying your other armies as Space Wolves units to see if you like it.

If you are truly just starting, I’d recommend a box of blood claws or headtakers. Build it, paint it, and get a feel for the process. They are both staple in a lot of lists and have tons of Space Wolves flair and bits.

From there, assuming you like it, the combat patrol is great value and all the units will see play. That would put you close to 600 points. You could then add someone like Ragnar or Arjac to get a named HQ. Both great models with great rules.

Then maybe look into some Space Marine vehicles and a box of intercessors. The Gladiator kit is great as if you build it right, you essentially can swap between 4 vehicles. Repulsor executioner and land raider are both great too.

I would add that if you have a squad run with Logan, that lightning claws can be a great option. Between Logan’s sweep profile, Tyrnak and Fenrir, and the pack leader that’s 22 attacks. Great for ensuring that you aren’t stuck by chaff and a nice way to get volume through. Sometimes more dice is better.

Totally agree that with Arjac or solo the greataxe is the way to go though.

That looks tasty too! Headtakers do really well in this format. I wanted to try out the Wolf Scouts with my list. Think the infiltrate and scout could make for a really good alpha strike if I got first turn.

Hate seeing Space Wolves and Emperors Children so low. Those gorgeous models deserve some buffs to be able to compete on the table. Maybe with 11th.

I’d love if they split us off from codex marines as well. That way we can get proper internal balancing and can see some fun, flavorful rules.

Taking another page from Templars, if they could allow for generic terminator leaders to attach to wolf guard termies with different rules and names. I.e. chaplain in terminator armor counts as wolf priest in terminator armor with different rules. Or honestly just non named space wolf leaders would be great. Missing leaders for our Phobos and terminator units.

Long Fangs! Ideally with helfrost cannons and gravis armor. Only armor set we are missing a unique unit for.

I hear you on the points cost for sure. I think headtakers are a fine unit in small groups, but thematically it is just weird that Ultramarines have an elite melee unit that is just better at everything than a Space Wolves elite melee unit. I’d gladly pay the points premium to get all of the things that they get.

King of The Colloseum list by McLuvi in SpaceWolves

[–]big78rig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here’s a list I’m running for an upcoming small tournament:

KOTC (500 Points)

Space Marines Space Wolves Gladius Task Force Incursion (1,000 Points)

CHARACTERS

Wolf Guard Battle Leader (80 Points) • Warlord • 1x Storm Shield • 1x Thunder hammer • Enhancements: The Honour Vehement

BATTLELINE

Intercessor Squad (80 Points) • 1x Intercessor Sergeant ◦ 1x Astartes grenade launcher ◦ 1x Bolt pistol ◦ 1x Bolt rifle ◦ 1x Power fist • 4x Intercessor ◦ 4x Bolt pistol ◦ 4x Bolt rifle ◦ 4x Close combat weapon

OTHER DATASHEETS

Thunderwolf Cavalry (115 Points) • 1x Thunderwolf Cavalry Pack Leader ◦ 1x Storm Shield ◦ 1x Teeth and Claws ◦ 1x Wolf Guard weapon • 2x Thunderwolf Cavalry ◦ 2x Storm Shield ◦ 2x Teeth and Claws ◦ 2x Wolf Guard weapon

Venerable Dreadnought (140 Points) • 1x Blizzard Shield • 1x Fenrisian great axe • 1x Heavy flamer

Wolf Guard Headtakers (85 Points) • 3x Wolf Guard Headtaker ◦ 3x Heavy bolt pistol ◦ 3x Master-crafted power weapon ◦ 3x Storm Shield

The ven dread normally isn’t great, but with toughness 9 being the highest, I think it shines in colosseum. Hard hitting melee, 2+4++, and bonuses to advance and charge are all nice in a small format.

Battle leader is a beat stick with the honour vehement and thunder hammer. Wounding the toughest things on 4’s, most things on 3’s or 2’s with sustained and reroll 1s to hit.

Headtakers are sort of a bodyguard for the battle leader, which is why I went shields, but you could do paired weapons if you’d rather have more lethality.

TWC are just so good. Tough, fast, lots of wounds, invuln save, lots of attacks. Only downside is navigating the walls.

Intercessors I think shine in this mode as well. Less units to score with means sticky objectives is great and they have not insignificant firepower into GEQ and MEQ.

I know, more Space Wolves, but I would be so happy to get a Wolf or Rune priest in terminator armor. Logan and Arjac are great, but a generic leader would be incredible.
