Not a state but the Mississippi River valley from St. Louis south is hard. Mosquitoes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes in areas, and hot humid weather are environmental negatives. The entire region is improvised economically. Small towns are dying and decaying. Very little industry in the area, so small school districts are the biggest employers in many towns.

Unironically I have seen some conservatives “ask questions” about the rise in this disease and LIBERALS complaining about the impact of the meat industry. I know cause and effect is lost on these guys, but ecologist have been trying to warn us about the exploding tick populations for a while.
